  1. Women are blonde, men are blond. I just learned that yesterday, in fact!
  2. My brother is getting married in early July. He just told us this in the last few days. (He had gotten his girlfriend pregnant and they were getting married, but she had a miscarriage last week. But they are apparently still going through with the wedding.) It's on super-short notice, so all they are going to do is have a civil ceremony with her parents and me and my parents there with them. I am SO relieved. I was really afraid that they were going to ask me to be in the wedding party. I didn't want to do it, but I have a hard time saying no to people. I had more than enough of being a bridesmaid at my ex-roommate's wedding.
  3. I'd rather not, thanks. Olives are disgusting (other than yummy extra virgin olive oil, that is).
  4. Have you taken measurements to see if you are losing fat and gaining muscle?
  5. My pre-authorization testing: Pulmonologist clearance Drug/Alcohol screening Nutritionist consult Psych consult Upper GI series Physical clearance from PCP
  6. Yep. Love Tom Petty.
  7. Speaking of smooth sailing, look at you! You've done so well!
  8. To be honest, I don't like spanking, in most cases, but I do realize that there might be instances where it could be used in an appropriate manner. I was spanked as a child. My dad had an anger problem. He scared the crap out of me when he would spank me, because I was never certain if he would remain in control. His face would turn tomato-red, his eyes would bug out, and he'd scream. He never lost control completely with me, but he sure scared me silly sometimes. I learned to lie and be sneaky as a result. My reasoning was this: if you don't get caught, you don't get spanked. I am still not completely comfortable around my dad. His anger problem really created a gap between us, because I was always scared that he could go off at any moment. I think that if non-violent discipline is used consistently from an early age, most children respond to it. Of course, if you let your children run wild and then try to teach them discipline, it won't work. While spanking might work on those children, I think that if the non-violent variety is used consistently from an early age, it does work.
  9. Ooh, hey, I figured out how to get rid of the chick, if you're interested. Just go to your control panel, click "edit options," and go down to "forum skin" (under miscellaneus options). You can change it to where the girl isn't showing.
  10. I had tried to use my credit card this weekend to buy some dried fruit stuff that Wasabubblebutt recommended. I got a call from the company this afternoon, telling me that my card had been declined (I was able to use a different card, though). I looked at my account online, and lo-and-behold, what do I see? Available credit - $0.00. So, I call them up. After 45 minutes on hold, I talk to a rep for 2 minutes. Apparently my online fax company got hacked. Instead of letting me know, they notify the Visa people, who put holds on all the Visa accounts that were used at the site. So now, I have to wait until I get another card. I'm not pissed because they put a hold on my account, I'm pissed because they didn't notify me of it sooner. I had to find out after my card was declined. On a similar pissed-off note, I have hiccups. A friend and I ate lunch at Olive Garden after we spent the morning looking for birds. On the drive back, I got hiccups, and they haven't gone away yet. I have horribly embarassing hiccups, too. Loud and squeaky.
  11. I just heard from the surgeon's office. They were able to get me in to see the surgeon at 1:00 on June 27. That means that I will have surgery within a few weeks of that date (from what I've seen with her other patients). I won't have to resubmit all my crap to insurance!:clap2:
  12. I think there is a distinct difference in the behavior of kids when they are just threatened with a punishment and when that punishment is consistent and followed through with. Talking and non-violent punishment DOES work when the parent is consistent with the punishment and the punishment IS applied when threatened. Unruly kids that are prone to talking back and breaking rules isn't a result of their parents failing to paddle them. It's a result of their parents failing to follow through with threatened punishment and their parents not being consistent. Kids that are paddled at home aren't necessarily going to be well-behaved kids. Good behavior isn't a result of the type of punishment inflicted on a child, in many cases, but rather the consistency of it.
  13. I'm 23 (24 on August 2). I will be getting banded this summer.
  14. They're nuts. I've told my folks that I would gladly elope if I ever get married. I'm not religious (as you know), so a church wedding would be completely lost on me, and the rest of it seems like a waste of time and money. Potentially thousands of dollars on an uncomfortable dress that would only be worn once, plus the expenses of a rehearsal dinner and reception? Please. I'd rather use the money for a nice, long honeymoon or a down payment on a house.
  15. I'd be a tad pissed, too. Tell her to make up her mind quickly, because she's running out of time to put holds on reception and ceremony locations. I wouldn't bother arranging anything until she tells you that she's made a decision. Take some time off and let her get a taste of what it feels like to plan a wedding. She won't be wishy-washy after that.
  16. It probably wouldn't be a problem if the fences were decent, but at a lot of my sites, the owners apparently have never heard the words "general maintenence." We're talking rusted out fences and gates that look like they're about to fall over. Unstable fences aren't fun to climb, even when I'm feeling 100%.
  17. That's what I was afraid of. Well, hopefully they will get me scheduled for surgery around the end of July and I can just take the rest of the summer off, since I will be starting classes again around the middle of August. That would probably be roughly 3 weeks.
  18. I'd have to say that if any bandster tries to eat that, they get what they asked for. And the pun is intended.
  19. So, I will be having surgery this summer. I am also doing field work for my thesis this summer. I have been trying to come up with a time frame that I can ask my advisor to let me take off after I have surgery. I don't think I would be carrying anything extremely heavy, but I may be carrying several light traps and a banding kit at one time (maybe 10-15 pounds total). I will probably be climbing over some fences (barbwire fencing and/or steel gates), and climbing up ladders to put cameras in trees (which may include a lot of stretching, since I am short and so is the ladder). Some of my sites are a hike from the access point, also, and some are in hilly areas. So, all in all, my field work wouldn't be super-strenuous, but it wouldn't be sitting behind a desk, either. I was thinking that I would probably go ahead and take an entire two weeks off, just in case. And then I start thinking about finances, since I am not paid for time that I don't work. So now, I don't know whether to go ahead and tell my advisor once I get my date that I will be taking two weeks after surgery, or to tell him that I will take a week and see where I am after that.
  20. I'm all for Vegas. I LOVED Tunica, so I think I'll pass out from happiness in Las Vegas.
  21. Where can I get samples of protein drinks? I don't want to pay a lot of money for something that I might not like.

This summer is going to be so busy! My annual family vacation/reunion is probably going to be in late June, I have to attend two nutrition classes that are two or three weeks apart in Memphis (a good 7 hour drive, one way) in either May or June or July, my brother is getting married in a civil ceremony sometime in early July, and my surgery is probably going to be sometime in late July (if they can move it up). On top of all that, I have to do more field work this summer, so I am going to have to figure out when I can get my advisor to let me take time off to do all this. :help: I am probably going to wind up missing a good chunk (if not all) of the family vacation/reunion, since it lasts an entire week, and that's an extra week that I won't be paid. Of course, that could be a good thing, since my extended family is super-nosy and my immediate family members have big mouths. I just know I would never hear the end of it about my surgery. I probably need to tell my folks to keep their mouths shut, if they haven't already blabbed. :straight :kiss
  23. Yep. Negative reinforcement should do the trick, I think.
  24. Northern California would also be very cool. I've always wanted to go to San Francisco. Or, heck. Someplace like New York or Boston would be awesome.
  25. I've not been banded yet. I'm hoping that will change in July, though. I've always been a picky eater. For some reason, I am just particularly sensitive to flavors, smells, and textures of food. A lot of creamy dressings are mayo-based, and mayo has a really funky flavor to me that comes through the dressing. I can't even SMELL ranch or blue cheese dressings, though, without gagging.
