  1. I am a Gerd patient and got the sleeve Sept 5, 2023. My HW 210, SW 206, CW 180. I hit the plateau in November 2023 and havent lost any weight since. I did have GERD previously before the surgery with a hiatal hernia 2cm; but, my stomach was literally stuck in my chest since 2008. I was told by my surgeon that GERD patients have a harder time losing weight. I workout 4 days hard since 3 weeks after surgery, I still watch what i eat as a GERD patient not weight loss. I want to know if anyone is going through this stall as well. I've seen videos of people around 240lbs weighing 120 6m after surgery. To me that is crazy, I do eat carbs but its limited and I still keep my protein intake above 90g daily. I do track my meals and i'll have days ill eat 1000 cal or below and sometimes as high as 1200 cals. I do drink about 48 oz of water sometimes less or more. When will my plateau stop or is it cause i am building my muscle fast; I was never obese just in my belly that is my issue. the left pic is 1 yr before surgery and the pic on the right is 4 months after surgery

    Gerd with weight loss Plateau

My question was never asked about other peoples issues with VSG & GERD. I asked if anyone with GERD hit a plateau and it’s harder for us to lose weight as my surgeon had told me. I’m 5 months post -op my height and starting weight I should be 168lbs but she thinks with my GERD it’s slower in patients like us. But yet I have more muscle in my body than I do fat. I never asked about anyone’s GERD and how to get off the meds or what suggestions they have.

You only had GERD 3 years prior as I’ve been dealing with GERD now for 14 yrs. This a huge difference and I was bleeding internally at one point cause a doctor prescribed me nsaid medications and I had an ulcer 23 yrs ago. I know all too well how to deal with things but the dr keeps putting me on higher medication Protonix 40 mg twice a day, Pepcid 40mg twice a day and now back on the antibiotics. Im 5 months post op and nothing has changed. So weaning off of my meds slowly doesn’t seem to be in my favor.

My nutritionist just recommended me eating up to 1400 calories a day. We had our appointment today and she’s happy with all my results plus understands I’m going through perimenopause and my GERD issues. She knows I eat carbs but I limit it and that’s good along with good fats and oils. I may just be gaining more muscle and my body is probably running on fumes as you said. I feel good overall and I will up my calories but I need to stop snacking too. It’s healthy snacks but as a GERD patient we can’t allow our stomachs to stay full that’ll trigger reflux.

I sleep good no issues there 😴😴😴😴 since my hiatal hernia repair I feel alive back to my old 30 something self. I’m active again, I eat well, I get good sleep and I have no more pain.

    Gerd with weight loss Plateau

I was considered obese because i couldnt exercise with the pain i was dealing with for 13 yrs, including regurgitating and vomiting if i jumped around. My food intake is ok it was just a question i asked to GERD patients. If doctors would have repaired my hiatial hernia when i asked them to find out why i was in so much pain i wouldn't have needed WLS. I am not worried about losing weight at all, I eat what i can as a GERD patient and exercise 4-5x a week. My belly is my only issue but i'm also going through perimenpause for the past 5 yrs. I am happy i can eat again and do things that i couldnt do because of the pain. I never had diabetes, high blood pressure only high cholesterol only because of my perimenopause, but i kept that down without medication because i've already been on meds for 14 yrs due to my GERD. I dont compare myself to others but i can't understand how people say they lost so much weight after 6 months sounds like starvation to me. my doctor or nutrionist have no issues with my food or exercise; i was just asking if it was true for GERD patients to lose weight more slowly than normal obese patients.

Honestly i never wanted this surgery WLS, i refused it fighting with the doctors the whole year. But when i learned it was actually meant for GERD patients to help us eliviate the reflux and saving our throat is when i said Yes i'll have the surgery. Doctors noticed the weight loss for GERD patients then it became the number 1 surgery for obesity. Perimenopause has a huge hand in our weight gain belly and reflux triggering more. Our hormones are off the track so I do take BHRT (BioIdentical Hormone Therapy) to help with a lot of my symptoms. Overall i really cant tell if my reflux is worse or not it's there regardless and i cant get off my meds.

Thank you for understanding as a GERD patient. My doctors never wanted to fully check what pain i was going through all these years and it had me pissed off. I wanted bypass, but yes what you said the dr felt by repairing my hernia it would subside. I feel since i've been on these meds for so long my body and stomach got use to it. Eventually I will get the bypass cause i'm still on meds and I still watch what i eat as a GERD patient.......no grease, hot or spicy foods. I do cardio, running and weight training and mix it up. My belly is the hardest to lose. Once again thank you for understanding me as others really dont understand what we go through its not weight that causes us pain, and we gained weight because we couldnt exercise due to the pain.

I follow all WLS guidelines so what does any of that really matter. I am allowed to eat some carbs as it’s limited and I don’t weigh my food. I use a small plate and I know what my measurements are. I do drink 30 minutes before and after. If I want sugar I’ll eat it within my own guidelines since I’m working out and that’s only once a month cravings. I’m only 5’3 and carry my fat in my belly. My surgeon has no problem with my stall since I workout 4-5x a week. I’m more worried about the daily medications I take for GERD for the past 13 yrs which isn’t good. They have me on 2 acid reflux pills and antibiotics so idk if that’s an issue too. I can lose weight I’ve always been thin all my life except after having my last baby which caused my hernia and issues; by then I couldn’t exercise no more gained weight plus perimenopause belly weight gain on top of that has been hard. The first pic on top was 1 yr before surgery the second pic is recent on new years.

The food guidelines for WLS have acidic foods which isn’t good for a GERD patient. The guidelines for GERD patients the food is bland. I can’t always do GERD eating since I need my protein and consuming yogurt, cottage cheese with other nutrients sometimes triggers my reflux. I don’t think it’s the combination of the two that’s stoping my weight loss. I may have built more muscle especially in my legs and arms but the belly muscle I’m still trying to build up.

I was supposed to have gotten bypass but she wanted sleeve to see if it’ll work since bypass is more major. I already knew my reflux wasn’t going to stop but it’s a chance I take. I’ve already researched bypass is best for GERD patients. But I’m just happy my hiatal hernia is repaired and my stomach is no longer in my chest causing severe pain.

I can lose belly weight it’ll just be my loose skin from having my kids that’ll need to be removed. Actually that pouch isn’t really big nor hanging a lot.

    Gerd with weight loss Plateau

My bmi wa 37 but I only carried my weight in my belly. I was on 20 mg of protonix then after I was bleeding internally they bumped me up to 40 mg. I’m daily and now dr wants me on 40 mg of protonix and 40 mg if Pepcid which to me is stupid this is my bariatric surgeon. I’ve been arguing with her that none of this is working and my burping has increased back again. That’s a lot of weight loss in 6 months, I’m still at 180 and it’s been 4 months. Idk if I could drop that fast in 2 months……… I already lived through the dos and donts as a GERD patient.

That’s what my surgeon said and I’ve been looking for research information about it. So I thought I’d ask here with other GERD patients.

    Gerd with weight loss Plateau

As I stated I’m not in this for weight loss. My issues are belly fat and working hard to get rid of it since I couldn’t workout for 15 yrs because of regurgitation, vomiting and pain with my hiatal hernia. My question was only asking about GERD patients losing weight slower than regular obese patients. I don’t have any food issues and my dietitian has no worries about me. I’ve always carried good muscles in my skinny legs. I don’t compare myself to no one I just can’t believe these bariatric weight loss videos people have actually lost that much weight in 6 months as they claimed especially how huge they were. My reflux has always been horrible and I’ve been on medication for 15 years daily. Now I can only stay off for 4 days but I’ll have bad silent reflux. My GERD is unmanageable even with a strict diet. My surgeon thought since I never had GERD with my 2 older kids maybe it would subside now. This all went downhill after I had my 3rd child.

    Gerd with weight loss Plateau

Oh I know all about as a GERD patient I’m supposed to have bypass. But this surgeon wanted to test if it would go away after hiatal surgery. But so far it hasn’t. Plus going through perimenopause makes it hard as well with my GERD. We do deal with a lot of issues and she stated as a GERD patient it’s harder for us to lose weight so I was wondering if it was true. My surgeon said i have until 2025 to get bypass if my gerd doesnt stop. I may push for it done sooner my GI dr thought i had barretts already.
