Bypass patients, is it the same for gastric sleeve patients?
All, thank you soooooo sooo much for your feedback and assistance! I cherish you all so very much. I did get some children's ibuprofen but haven't taken it yet. I just wondered if it would be okay to take in a pinch of tylenol didn't do its thing. I also worry about liver health.
I hope you are all doing awesome!

    NickelChip,
Thank you for that follow up study.
Taking ibuprofen for 30 days would be significant. It also refers to taking a defined daily dose which I’m sure is the prescribed amount over 24 hours, again, a significant amount.
I feel confident that taking some ibuprofen for some muscle pain after a long day in the yard or for a terribly bad headache will not be detrimental to my health.
I hope these studies as evidence provide comfort to others as well who have occasional pain and are deeply concerned about damaging their body.

I saw this Swedish study linked to the one you posted: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35595650/
They found that continuous use of NSAIDs in bypass patients for 30+ days was a significant risk for ulcers, but temporary use was not. Additionally, they found no association between NSAID exposure and peptic ulcers in sleeve patients. So it seems you might be right about the extreme use of caution (to avoid being sued). Not to say anyone should disregard medical advice, but it does help to put the risk into perspective.

I’m just about seven months out, and I take it on occasion, but only when needed for short periods of time. I also use liquid gel and take it with food.
I’m currently recovering from kidney stones from taking my Calcium supplements (that’s a whole other story) and took a few. Tylenol just didn’t do anything for me and the Oxy they prescribed loops me out and constipate me.

    Here’s an interesting study I found https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33353863/
It’s from 2020 but they didn’t find any correlation to issues. I’m not sure if there are more recent studies, but I tend to think, in my opinion only, that it is overhyped, and they are simply airing on the side of caution, which makes sense. Since every persons system and surgery behave differently, it would be too hard to tell who could tolerate and who couldn’t. If someone then shows up with an ulcer, and their doctor didn’t warn them, lawsuits could happen. Again, just my opinion.

Definitely ask your surgeon. My book from the clinic says I can never have it again. I spoke with my surgeon and I told him I really only take it about 4 times a year and he said it would be fine for me to take it then, he told me if I was taking it every day or a few times a week then it would not be okay. So I think how often a person takes it is a factor.

I have a sleeve & my surgeon did allow me to start taking NSAIDs after he removed my gall at 2 years. Though he did give me rules to follow. Half a dose only, one a day, not on consecutive days & only take after eating a meal. I rarely have need to take pain relief, but I find paracetamols do nothing for any pain I may have. I’ve probably had five NSAIDs in the last two years. It has to be real pain (like back pain from my oozing discs) to take one. Actually had to throw out a box as it had expired!
If it is just a head cold I’d stick with a paracetamol/acetaminophen like Tylenol which will help with any fever & general flu like aches. If your surgeon allows you to take NSAIDs, keep them for more severe pain. But give your surgeon a call or send an email asking if you can take NSAIDs & how best to take them. They might have totally different advice.

I'm 4 months out from gastric sleeve and I asked my doc about it. She said try not to take it,but if I have to , take a prilosec before taking it. Sometimes I just can't get the relief I need with tylenol. I'm glad to be able to rely on ibuprofen once in a while.

I don't know which surgery you had, but it's more of an issue with bypass than it is with sleeve (although my surgeon forbids it for either surgery). Although the PA at my clinic once told me that I could take it on a VERY OCCASIONAL basis...like if I have a terrible headache that Tylenol is doing nothing for. But again, only very occasionally. After eight plus years, though, I still haven't taken any. I take Tylenol for headaches. It doesn't do as good of a job as ibuprofen, but it does help.

You’d know if you had dumping - cold sweats, heart palpitations, vomiting &/or diarrhoea (lots), wiped out for hours, etc. I think what you experienced was just your tantrum throwing petulant tummy - think two year old child. Eating something without issue one day & then the next day it’s no way is pretty common the first couple of months. Your tummy is still healing & is extra sensitive. Usually if you just avoid that food for a couple of days or a week you’ll be able to eat it again without a problem.
Some people do struggle with eggs & the Tomato in the shakshuka may have been too rich & acidic this morning. Shakshuka always gave me grief when I ate it even before surgery - stirred up my reflux & excess stomach acid production which can be an issue for a little while after surgery.

I had my surgery on June 10th so I'm at about a month also. I feel better overall but I get tired so incredibly easy still. I went to walk around Lowes Home Improvement today and to get some things because my first project post OP today was supposed to be scraping popcorn ceiling in my recently acquired spare bedroom but I haven't managed to even start wetting down the ceiling. It's only 3:40 and I feel like I've done a ton which I haven't. I feel most days like I could take a nap every day (unfortunately I can't because of work) and by the time I get home M-F, I'm ready for bed by 8pm. Before surgery, I was a night owl, even on work days.
So I'm with ya! I would love to know where to get some energy from. My eating and drinking is pretty darn good because of the Baritastic app and reminders so I'm not sure why I feel so tired this far out from surgery when I see so many others have tons of energy and they're not far out from their surgery.

Something I swore to myself before going into surgery (among many other personal goals) was that I'm going to not even try to care about the number and I'm definitely not weighing every day. I figure that if I continue to follow my surgeons and my nutritionists instructions, the weight will come off in due time. I am starting to slow down in weight loss and have started week 5. As a "lifer" to weight loss struggles, I've learned that our bodies know what to do and if it means holding onto a few pounds for a few days for energy or whatever, as long as I am doing what I am supposed to do, my body will work with me and do what it needs to do.
I knew the weight loss would slow down after the first couple or few weeks and I'm fine with that. As long as I don't gain a bunch back, I am moving in the right direction.
Also keep in mind that if we aren't losing pounds, we are losing inches. Typically we don't lose both at the same time. Additionally, if we are exercising, in a way that builds muscle mass, the pounds may not seem to be coming off when in fact, those pounds are showing up in the form of muscle mass which weighs a lot more than fat.
Keep your chin up! You are doing awesome! Don't worry about the dumb scales. If your clothes are getting lose and you feel good, then you are definitely moving in the right direction! 🤗❤️

This doesn't sound like dumping to me. More like your pouch asserting it's finnicky approach to food.
There are days when even something that has been on my diet for weeks on end will suddenly just fail. It happens. Eventually you will become aware of the subtle signs (like throwing up) that indicate this meal is going to be a problem.
I find my pouch is going to be most finnicky at breakfast. I don't know why particularly but I have theories which I won't delve into. You're welcome.

Hey everyone. So I'm in my fifth week post OP and have been doing extremely well with food choices, slow eating, careful chewing, and sticking within the parameters my nutritionist and my doctor have given me.
This morning, I tried eating an over medium egg (cooked whites, soft & runny yolk) over the shakshuka I have been eating all week for Breakfast. (It is a pureed form of shakshuka with sausage that I've had zero trouble with over the last week.)
I keep seeing that dumping syndrome seems to be only related to too much sugar. Since I'm not a sweets fan, that's not a problem for me. However, after just throwing up most of what I just ate, and it being the first time it's happened the entire post OP time, I'm curious if dumping syndrome can include things that our new tumtums just don't want?
I may have eaten too fast. The yolk could have been too undercooked (I've been doing soft but cooked yolk up until this morning), or maybe even it was too much food? It was about and ounce and a half of pureed Shakshuka with a sprinkling of cheddar cheese and an egg cooked over medium, (no frying so no oil..just a small egg sized non stick pan and then a bit of warm Water to help cook the whites) and that's it.
I started feeling flushed with sharp belly pains (not just where baby tum tum lives) and thought I had to go to the restroom. Once I got to the bathroom, I started getting cold sweats, sharp pains, then that weird tingly feeling I get around my jaw when I'm getting ready to throw up. Now that I have thrown up, I feel fine but I definitely don't want that to become a thing, especially as well as I've been doing after getting through the 2 miserable liquids weeks.
I'm curious about other's experiences, if I should be worried, and if this could also be a type of dumping syndrome? Because my baby tum tum absolutely said hell to the no, and dumped that breakfast right out from the top.
(Edit: oh yeah, I should probably lay off the red sugar free Gatorade that I love so I don't freak out and think it's blood, right? 😂 I think I'll go back to water with a couple splashes of sugar free cranberry juice for flavor.)

Hi everyone! So today I went to my 1 month post op doctor's visit. My labs were impressive - thank goodness, as I was worried. I have lost 32 pounds since surgery 6/8/22. I did not lose any weight pre op, in fact I gained as I enjoyed a "last hurrah" eat fest. I was cleared for all gym workouts! Yaaaay! Also, no more Protein Shakes as I now need to eat food rich in Protein. I am also on a regular high protein low carbs diet - 3 meals daily. I am honestly worried about this as my taste buds have changed, I'm never hungry, and even when I try to eat, I get full after 2 or 3 bits. This surgery has completely changed my relationship with food. There are times when I think of enjoying a large bowl of Pasta and chicken parmesan and feel sad, but that feeling is short lived when I look in the mirror or get on the scale and can say, the sacrifice was worth it. We can all do this!

Just had my two week post-op appointment. Doctor is very happy with everything. I've now been cleared for soft foods - yaaaaaaayyy! I thought I'd be on soft foods for 1-2 months, but doctor said do it for 2 weeks then I can move on to the final rest-of-my-life stage. Very happy with how things are going.

So happy you are doing well! I'm getting ready to start week 3 post OP and I can WAIT to make my chicken salad and egg salad in puree form. Other than some issues with gassiness off and on, and lower energy, I am doing awesome too and am sooooo glad I finally, after two years of my primary care physician recommending it, had the surgery! Now it's all about getting healthy and active again! Hoping some of the medications I was taking for scary stuff will eventually be weened! Also hoping my hypothyroidism takes a back seat in the near future. Hehe!

I have also felt bruised around my mid section but nothing near as bad as the gas pain I had. By the time the gas started working itself out a few days later, I finally started feeling a bit of discomfort from the surgery itself. I just took tylenol (I couldn't stand the pain medicine they gave me) every morning and every night and it seemed to work well. I just started week three and while I still have some slight discomfort, it's not bad at all. I'd say the worst days were the first couple after coming home. I use a pillow pressed against the right center of my abdominal area when I have to cough or sneeze and it helps a lot as that is when I seem to notice a bit more discomfort. I have a pretty high pain tolerance so that may be why I feel like the surgical pain was the least pain I've experienced compared to the gas pains but I promise you, it will continue to ease up each day. I'm trying to get back to being active again since I go back to work Monday and I feel like just sitting around is not conducive to a quicker recovery and it seems to be going well.
Rest and relaxation is good for the first week though so take it easy maybe and just try to get up and move around a few times a day! Wishing you the best over the next couple of weeks! WK 3, puree week, is a game changer. I made homemade egg salad with my backyard chicken eggs yesterday and oh my gosh, it was amazing! Hehe!

I am still losing, but already have a good bit of lose skin/squish. I will tell you without reservation, that I would rather have a little extra skin jiggle than be fat and miserable and unhealthy and on the fast track to early death. Do I wish things were super toned and tight? Sure, don't we all? But the reality is, I've carried around over 100lbs of extra weight my entire adult life, I'm not ever going to have the body of a person who was always thin. But what I do have is my life back, a healthy relationship with food, a body that I've learned to love and be grateful for, and YEARS of my life given back. For me, the skin is a reminder of how far I've come and what I've done for myself as an act of love.
I would suggest to anyone considering surgery, that they focus on their mental and emotional health first and foremost. You have to be in a good place INSIDE before you are ready to make the OUTSIDE changes. Truly, this is a life long journey and you will only be as successful as you're willing to be, which starts with the head work. I think having done a ton of therapy and getting myself into a good headspace before surgery is what has allowed me to accept the less desirable parts of the process and not get hung up.

One of the more fascinating things being a part of these boards is all the different pre-op and post-op routines. Everyone's experience truly is unique. Doc put me on the shot because I guess I'm at a higher risk for an embolism, I'd guess because of my size (410 to start), age (51) and history of high blood pressure. But it came as a total shock when the nurse came in to show me how to do it. I'm like "I'm going to be doing this to myself???". But just like all the rest, you make it happen for the greater good.
I'm following the post-op instruction so carefully. I have a 15-minute timer. When it goes off, I drink an oz (sometimes 2). Every 4 of them, I go for a short walk and do my breathing exercise. I so badly want this part to be smooth so I can get on with the rest. And I am not normally this much of a medical rule follower! But I'm committed. Can't let all that money go to waste 😂
Also was UP 5 pounds two days after surgery. That's not encouraging, but I know that's normal and I'm not letting it bother me .... much. Looking forward to hearing more details from you and others at right about the same point.

Tender at incision sites but okay overall. I’ve gotten sick twice. We weren’t allowed anything yesterday. This morning, we got ice chips to let melt in our mouth. This afternoon they took us to a bar to get virgin frozen margaritas. I had maybe 2-3 oz of it before I couldn’t drink/eat anymore. I’m having a lime popsicle right now.

After this it’ll be sipping on Water until tomorrow.
