Muffinman1119 got a reaction from summerseeker in over preparing??
I think most people are all guilty of this to an extent. I know I was. I bought all this stuff to make milkshakes that I got he recipes for out of gastric sleeve cookbooks and I think I made all of 3 shakes. I even bought an immersion blender to help make them. Like Ben Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” You’re preventing being unprepared and it will be worth it in the long run.

Just about a month post-op sleeve here. I went with the sleeve because of lack of complications/intensiveness of the surgery compared to the bypass. My own opinion is that the bypass is for those who are incredibly morbidly obese, such as 400, 500, 600+ lbs. I think the sleeve is better geared towards those who are overweight and obese, but not to the extent of the bypass. Ultimately, it's between you and your surgeon/doctor. I wish you the best of luck!

I also have family members with alcohol dependence, so I keep a very close eye on my alcohol intake. That being said, I have had to keep an eye on other offshoots like shopping. It will try to sneak up on you, I swear! No great advice other than it’s great that you are aware and being proactive.

You're gonna be ok. You literally went through a life-altering surgery, it's ok to feel a little unsteady about things. Eventually, things will begin to get easier and you'll start noticing more positives than negatives. We all lose at different rates and no two of our stories are the same. Just keep your chin up and never stop moving forward

I have had a few dalliances with what could be "transfer addiction" both good and bad...I definitely have overindulged in cannabis a few times since my surgery to a point where my fiance was asking me if i was "self medicating", and I also feel like I am somewhat dependent on riding my motorcycle as a dopamine fix...which isn't bad, it works out my shoulders/hips/core and gets me some sunshine.

i think awareness is the key. If you check in with yourself regularly and are honest about your patterns and internal pain, you can keep from going down a bad rabbit hole.

food was my transfer addiction. My family has a strong genetic disposition for alcoholism, so i was always paranoid and over cautious when it came to alcohol. Instead I was blind to how i was binging on food instead of alcohol. Making that connection along with some other circumstances has helped me be in “remission” with binging. There are still urges, but I can be in control. I am aware now and regularly look at my life if anything is going down an unwanted path.

Great to read everyone’s updates! I’m doing wonderfully. I am the happiest I have been for years and I feel great in my skin.

I don’t know my weight but a few weeks ago I was at 199 (215 pre op) which I am delighted with. I know from my clothes it is still coming off but I am working through a bunch of issues with the scale so I’m not weighing myself. I’m also super lazy and I am sure it would be coming off quicker if I actually worked out once in a while.

Note that I eat three times as many carbs as my dietician recommends and I eat significantly more calories than I need to survive. I am content to gauge and eat when I am hungry and as an ED survivor that is a huge win in itself. I’m not in a hurry.

I’m cooking almost everything from scratch and it’s delicious. I can eat about 3/4 cup to a cup depending on consistency. No heartburn or any other adverse issues, and I stopped omeprazole two weeks after surgery. I consider myself very fortunate.

My main reason for the revision was so I could eat dense foods that would just come right back up with the band. I am so grateful to take a big bite of anything and I feel a wonderful freedom with that.

I was curious if any of my fellow sleevers had been diagnosed with depression prior to or after surgery. Since about August 2021, (was sleeved on 7/27/22) I've been experiencing on and off symptoms of depression. It comes and goes on a daily/weekly basis. One day I'm fine, then the next week I'm just down in the dumps with seemingly no way out, then I'm fine for the next week or two. I've spoke with a psychologist in the previous months and obviously spoke with a psych to do my pre-surgery evaluation. If you are taking any anti-depressants, what are they and what kind of side effects have you had?

On the right track seeing a psychiatrist. Looks like you need another distractions outside of baseball. I am a huge sports fan as well and I know the feeling when your team lets you down. Since my surgery I am really into bicycle riding which helps with my anxiety and gets my head in the right space, not to mention makes me trimmer and in better shape all around.

Prior to surgery I was not addicted to any drugs or alcohol. However, I would comfortably assume I was “addicted” to food. Now that I’m not eating anywhere close to as much as I used to, I fear I am seeking to fill that void with an odd replacement…professional sports. I am an avid baseball fan and my team has a really good chance at making the playoffs this year. When they win, I’m in a great mood, nothing could be better. However, when they lose, I go into a tailspin and get very depressed, instantly having little to no interest in doing anything or finding joy in anything.
I am speaking with a psychiatrist in a week, so hopefully that will help begin the coping process.

Has anyone else had a personal experience with transfer addiction, and if so, how did you/are you dealing with it?

I was Dx with depression and GAD years before surgery. I was on an SSRI with great success, and thankfully, have not had any issues with medication tolerance/efficacy post-op. I will say, the body dysmorphia and head work required post-op has been tough tough. I am back in therapy, and will likely talk to my Dr about possibly upping my med dose, at least for a while. I've noticed that as I've gotten further along (nearly a year post-op now) less and less work is in my body and more and more is in my head.
Get in to see your doctor and start on treatment. You deserve health, happiness, and wellness. YOU ARE WORTH IT.

I am SOOOO happy! It has been a long journey, since March, & I got the call this morning...APPROVED! I am set for NOV 5th for gastric sleeve surgery. My PREOP is Oct 14th, so I'm assuming that is when I start liquid diet. I had heard stories with my insurance, since it is medicaid, on how long & tough it is to get approved. I was right on the borde,r 40 bmi, but I also was diagnosed with sleep apnea & diabetic, now in prediabetes. So what should I do now? Take pictures of before for after? FOr the people that have already had surgery, do you have any tips or "I wish I would have done this before surgery" type of suggestions?

I've mentioned in other posts that I had complications post-revision surgery. I became profoundly depressed while in hospital for weeks without knowing when I would be able to leave. My Wellbutrin was bumped from 150mg XR to 225mg daily and it helped tremendously. Once I was out of rehab and back home the extra dose was discontinued. You might talk to your doctor about adding a bit more during this slide you are in.

I actually have bipolar disorder but it is more of the depressed type so I take a mood stabilizer AND Wellbutrin. For me the Wellbutrin causes me to sweat more but it’s a very uncommon side effect so it most likely won’t be an issue for most people. I have tried many many other meds and they don’t work as well so I have had to learn to deal with this side effect until other new meds are developed like sunnyway said it took a while for me to find the right combination of meds to treat my bipolar and even still small adjustments have to be made once in a while so definitely be patient and don’t give up.
