It’s been almost 9 months for me, it’s a 6 month program. Hospital has been working on a selective surgical schedule until recently due to the Pandemic and have been behind. I started my liquid diet yesterday. My program technically Ended in February as eligible. Don’t bank on anything so you don’t get upset. I wish you the best of luck

I decided to talk with my husband and children about it, my mother and my brother. Some online friends I have met through my business . I lost 30 in the first 2 months of my 6 month program. My mom, brother and husband are on board, but all asked me to reconsider and loose it naturally.
I was a skinny person with crazy high metabolism until 30, received medical attention for anxiety and severe depression and poof, weight gain constantly since. I am 41 now. Always was active and was labeled medically induced morbidly obese. I have been to ‘diet doctors’ nutritionists, doctors, tried getting off the medication and gain plus all the time.
I was literally doing one meal at dinner and ‘testing’ shakes and purée phase foods for the other meals. Because honestly I am terribly anxious for the liquid diet. Which I happened to start yesterday.
I in total lost 50, but gained back 5-10 in a nervous dip and adding back to 3 meals. Trying the yogurt recipes (I gain with yogurt 😢) My doctors still want me to stick with the yogurt. I do know that carbs are my gains.
I have my RNY scheduled May 10 and can’t wait.
It’s not a secret, but I am not trying to tell anyone because it’s my body and my decision. Judgements are always made and sometimes (always) my family (aunts uncles cousins) can be completely rude.
All in all, I am doing this for myself and my children, I want to live and annoy them for a long time and love the families they ave. So don’t worry about anyone else. Immediate support group small~ All I need 🥰

Day 2 is done, now on day 3. Hubby went to the store and bought me some V8 (I love the stuff), some sugar free iced tea, and some pho broth (my absolute FAVORITE). It's really helped. And tomorrow he's ordering chinese food for dinner and getting me wanton Soup (my other favorite - but I won't be eating the wantons, sadly). He's really going above and beyond to help me get through this diet, and I just love him even more for it. Surgery is 5 days away. I got this!!!

So day 1 is in the books and I'm now on to day 2. Something I learned is that I have to make sure I'm getting enough calories. I only had just under 600 calories for the day yesterday and I was beyond tired, had headaches, and felt shaky. Today I'm making sure I have between 1000 - 1200 calories, and hopefully I'll feel better.

katehackenburg reacted to Alex Brecher in All About Weighing in after Weight Loss Surgery
Weighing yourself after weight loss surgery is a given, but your surgeon may not always tell you what you need to know about it. Do you know why you should weigh in, how often, and how to do it? What ups and downs should you expect to see, and how seriously should you take them? Whether you are prepping for surgery or are well into your weight loss journey, becoming an expert on weighing in can help you lose more weight.

    Why Weigh Yourself?
Yes, you weigh yourself to know how much you weigh. But what is the point if you are on your weight program and your doctor will weigh you at your next appointment? Weighing yourself can have some benefits.
It can help you lose more weight by keeping you accountable. Just like logging your food can make you think twice before taking that extra bite, knowing that you will face the scale can keep you from serving yourself another portion.
It can be motivating. When you see the number of the scale go down, you might be more eager to wake up early for your workout, or order a salad instead of a sandwich.
It can be empowering. Knowing your weight gives you another piece of information about your body, and embracing rather than avoiding yourself can empower you to do your best for yourself.
    How Often?
You can weigh yourself as often as you like, but it does not make sense to take too many weigh-ins too seriously. For many people, a good rule of thumb is to do a weekly weigh-in. You can take this weight as your “official current weight.” Some people like to stay off of the scale between their weekly “official” weigh-ins, while others like to weigh themselves daily, or even more than once a day, just to see what is going on. That is fine, as long as you do not take each weigh-in too seriously and do not let it bother you.
    How to Weigh Yourself
You may be a 10, 20, or 40-year veteran of weighing yourself, but there are better and, well, worse ways to do so. It may be worth reviewing or revising your weigh-in practices to get better results. Here are some guidelines for accurate weigh-ins.
Weigh yourself at the same time of the day for your weigh-in, usually first thing in the morning.
Choose the same day each week to weigh yourself.
    Wear minimal or no clothing.
Use the same scale, and a trustworthy one, each time.
    Mistakes to Avoid
In theory, weighing yourself is as simple as stepping on the scale. Not! Your weight can be deceptively high or low if you find yourself making any of these mistakes.
Weighing yourself after a heavy meal. While 1 lb. of lettuce has only 50 calories, it weighs…1 lb. If it is in your stomach, you will weigh an extra pound. Weighing yourself in the morning before you eat anything can help avoid the problem of extra weight inside your stomach.
Weighing yourself wearing shoes or clothes. Heavy shoes and a full set of clothes can weigh 5 or more lb. That is a big chunk of weight that is not yours!
Weighing yourself with too much salt in your system. With salty foods comes sodium, with sodium comes thirst, and with thirst comes extra Water. Water is heavy. It can still be in your system the next morning, and show up on the scale.
Weighing yourself right after exercising. Exercise does help you lose body fat, but it also helps you lose body water through sweat. You can lose a few lb. of water in one workout, and your body weight might be artificially low right after.
Weighing in Monday morning. If your weekdays are picture-perfect in terms of eating, and your weekends progress from Friday night at the bar to Sunday afternoon in front of the TV, your Monday morning weight can be variable, and possibly high. Friday morning may be a better time for you to weigh in.
Getting inaccurate numbers can be bad in many ways.
You might get discouraged for no reason if your weight shows up as higher than it really is.
You could become confused about how what you eat affects your weight if there seems to be no correlation.
You might have trouble detecting regain, and not modify your diet until you have gained more than you wanted.
    Choosing a Scale
On top of making sure you are ready for a good weigh-in, you need to make sure that your scale is also ready. Using a cheap scale can drive you crazy because it may not be accurate. It could be difficult to read, or it could vary within a few pounds even if you are the same weight.
There are many affordable Body Scales that are highly accurate. You can find features that help you read the scale easily, track your weight, and see other information. These are some features to consider.
    Digital read-outs.
    Bluetooth connectivity to your smartphone.
    Memory of your recent weights.
Measurements such as body fat and lean muscle mass.
Use the scale to help you on your weight loss journey, and you can consider it another weapon in your weight loss arsenal. The more tools you have, the better your weight loss success can be!

The support of 1 or 2 people is enough ... and you have all of us!

This is a really great thread. I just wanted to add that for the people I have confided in, aside from my husband, I don't want to talk about it with anyone. I am not open for updates. I don't want to be asked how much weight I have lost. I do not want any attention on the matter what so ever and will remind them (with an effort to be polite) that this isn't an open topic for conversation unless I broach the topic.

I have just started my journey for bariatric surgery, but it's approved. I still have to go through the nutritionist, psychiatrist, etc. However I have told everyone and I don't care if they agree with my decision. I'm doing it for me and not anyone else. Very determined!

I previously did a program where I lost 130lbs. I didn't tell anyone that I didn't interact with in person. So though I talked to my mom a lot, she had no clue that I was losing weight. I showed up to drop my daughter off for her annual trip to the grandparents and was missing a person.
After five years and a pregnancy, I've regained all of that. I restarted the previous program, but I just couldn't eat the foods this time. My mom and I are now going through this process together, so she knows this time.

I told my family and in-law family (all supportive), my partner (supportive after I had a meltdown, where he found out how miserable I truly was), and my closest friends (I was a little nervous about that, but they've also been super supportive). I've been very fortunate. However, I was prepared to do it with or without support, since it's my choice and only I know hard the journey to getting well has been.
Plus it's hard to argue with a visibly thinner, healthier and most importantly happier me.

Short term post op some people experience mood swings and depression and/ or anxiety due to the hormones being out of whack from major surgery and the accelerated weight loss. But long term I think if people have issues it’s more because of meds not working as well.

My dr suggested sleeve over bypass because of the medicine absorption issue that is possible with bypass but far less common with sleeve. I just kept reminding myself that LESS absorption did not mean NO absorption so maybe I would have to take a higher milligram of certain meds to get the right amount to absorb but they should still work. Or maybe I would have to try another medication but there are so many out there that something should work.

There are some meds such as extended release meds that tend to cause The most issues for people. Some people are fine with them but others have to take the immediate release version twice a day. So my takeaway was Basically as long as you work closely with your doctor they should be able to make adjustments to your medication to find something that can work for you.

I had one medication that you have to eat 350 calories at the time you take it so I had to switch to another Medication but other than that I have not had any issues with medications post sleeve. I have bipolar disorder and anxiety disorder and I totally get what you are saying. I was a little bit nervous the whole time but I just kept reminding myself that I went with the surgery the dr suggested and I am very compliant with my meds and responsible to go to the doctor and ask for help if I need it and there are so many meds out there that IF I had issues they would only be temporary.

I made a decision from the beginning to keep this whole process a secret from almost everyone except my husband (my kids are too little to understand so they didn’t need to know), my mother, 1 brother and my best friend. No one else knows - not even anyone at work. I had my surgery and was able to get back to work after 4 days off. I work from home though so that was easy to do.
People do judge unfortunately and I didn’t need any negativity in my life while going through this major life change.

    Two secrets:
I not only withheld my surgery; I also withheld that I went to Mexico to have it done. I have kept it to a very small group of 4 -- my 3 adult children and my mom. My kids were my emergency contacts and they knew about the surgery before I went. I went alone to Mexico due to Covid and it took me 2 months to admit to my kids where it was done. It was 4 months later that I shared both with my mom, due to not being able to predict her response (she was charmingly supportive). My mom and children have shared it with some of their friends and significant others. I have not told my siblings, best friend, cousins, or close co-workers.
    About work:
My students have not really noticed. Coworkers are a mixed bag - some ask - one in particular who I am not close to brings up my weightloss A LOT. Almost everyone else just ignores it or compliments my outfits. I have had people come to me about weight loss advice and they have told me about how upset they feel. With an honest heart, I reassure them that they look wonderful to me. Since I am a teacher and gossip is constant in our school, I have chosen time and again to not share my journey.
    The fallout:
One of my three children felt betrayed that I lied about where I was having my surgery - honestly this has put a real strain on our relationship. She is hurting, but she has to come to terms with this in her own time. I feel guilty for not telling other members of my family, but I am standing by my decision. I work very hard to stay body positive and I believe that all sizes are beautiful in others - I could not give this grace to myself. Am I going to continue to hold this as a secret? Most likely yes. If I ever have a man that I am serious about, I may confide in him. As time has worn on, I feel even less likely to tell people, not more.

I went through exactly the same thing so I know first hand how you are feeling. First of all reach out to someone who can help you with the suicidal thoughts get some counselling asap. Gosh I was that bad I was bawling to my mother that I now wanted a stomach transplant 😳. I felt awful I wanted to die I spent 6 weeks curled up in a ball on my sisters couch. I did the old but I wasn't that big blah blah blah. What you are going through is grief and you will go through all the stages some more than once. When I started loosing weight I would tell people I would gladly have the weight back just to feel normal again. I totally get how you feel. Hormones have a lot to do with this I was perimenopausal and ended up on Patches as I said to my Dr I can't deal with both meaning the effects of surgery and menopause, so that helped alot. It gets better trust me on this. I cried multiple times a day for weeks, I didn't go to work thank God I had plenty of leave saved up but going back home and back to work helped me get back into my routine and gave me something else to to think about. On your path to recovery the good days will slowly out number the bad days. I couldn't talk about surgery without crying for months. I would tell people it should be outlawed all sorts of crazy stuff. So now I am 8 months post op and feel so much better. I am 35 kilos down and have come to the realisation that I wouldn't have lost the weight without the surgery, yes I went through a stage of if only a stuck to the pre op changes I made I wouldn't have had to have surgery... But I can't say this enough and you are probably thinking yeah right what do you know it's worse for me but I do know and it will get better just be gentle on yourself try to do things you enjoy spend time with supportive people who will look after you when you need it. You are not alone it gets better, how long will it take you I don't know it took me 6 months and I think when I realised I could eat and drink "normally" again I got better quicker. Now I am fighting another battle but that's a story for another day. Love your restriction while you have it. Get your Protein in stay hydrated. If you want to message me privately please do as it helps to talk to someone who has been where you are. It gets better ❤
