Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum. I'm from the UK but had my Gastric Sleeve surgery on 1st April at Medicine Hospital in Istanbul, Turkey.
Feeling pretty good so far, just twinges in my stomach if I have to get off a chair or turn in bed. Incisions look to be healing OK. Have an online meeting with our Dietician later this morning.
Good luck to everyone having surgery today.

You guys are all SO great! It’s genuinely making me feel better just reading everyone’s thoughts and advice. I didn’t sleep well last night, I woke up hungry 😪, BUT the scales are down, i’ve lost 2.8 kg on the pre op diet. Surgery is on 11th, I can’t wait now!

    Hi guys.
I’m Vivian new to the app and was shocked when I found this thread. I am scheduled for VSG on April 19th!! I’m pretty much set just trying to prepare myself mentally for this journey. I’m a ball of emotions (excited, nervous, etc…) I start my liquid diet 2 days prior to surgery, my BMI is 35.7 with 2 health conditions. Anyone else scheduled the same week as me?

Hi, Vivian…welcome and congrats on having a surgery date. My fingers are crossed hoping for April 11.
Your emotions sound right on target. Right now I’m excited while I wait for a surgery, and very happy that all the pre-procedure tests are complete.
i have a large hiatal hernia which means I’ll probably have RNY instead of VSG. Good luck, and I’m sure I’ll see you around here. There is great advice and support here.

I hear you loud and clear. Its the shakes that touch my rage center, if I could just do Soups I wouldn't be such a grump.

Thank you for the encouragement! I def am getting myself prepped in advance. I feel like I have a lot of sweet things like the shakes, ice pops, Jello etc and I’m more of a savory person so I’m gonna try and get a bunch of broths to mix it up

I'm on day 11 of my 2 week liquid diet. The first week was the absolute worst. After the second week or so, it started to get easier. I think my body started to get accustomed to having less calories. The trick for me has been to have something to eat (drink) regularly throughout the day, like every hour or two. When it gets really hard I've been relying on the sugar free ice pops. They give me a little bit of sweet and I really enjoy them. In the evenings I've been making broth out of half a cube of bullion (only half since there is so much salt in those) A huge helper has been the Gatorade Zero. That is enjoyable and does a good job of making me feel full. I haven't cheated because I don't want to ruin the progress I've made so far. It would probably be like starting all over. I've lost 12 pounds since I started so far and I still have another 3-4 days. My surgery is on Monday. Almost there now. You can do it, stay strong and when you are feeling hungry, don't ignore it. Have the next item you are allowed for the day.

I’m cranky just thinking about it I start the diet next week. I really don’t know what else to say besides just keep your eye on the prize! And I think feeling cranky is quite normal

I’m one of those people that does have to gain weight prior to surgery as I’ve lost weight since my approval (stress) and don’t have my surgery for another month. Thankfully I only have a 2-day preop diet! I’m self-pay and my surgeon’s office is the one requiring it due to my bmi being at the minimum for surgery.

Hi everyone! I thought I would finally check in. I had my surgery last Tuesday, March 22. I am six days post op and feeling okay.
I was able to de-gas by Thursday (ugh, gas pains are the worst) and I have been having daily bowel movements since then. I have a lot of medical issues and one of them is kidney disease and my kidneys are not at all happy about this surgery, which was a concern before surgery. I've actually gained weight because I cannot pee. All the Water I drink has nowhere to go but my feet, ankles and legs. I am eating about 250 calories a day because my new stomach (Phoebe) hates everything (everything tastes like metal - probably because of my meds). Oh, and I can't seem to keep my heart rate above 50.
That's all the bad stuff. The good news is that I haven't had any pain meds since the day of my surgery. My nausea isn't as bad as expected and after over doing it on Friday and taking it easy over the weekend, my incision pain is not too bad. Every day I set a goal for myself and so far, I am hitting my little goals. 🎖️

Hi everyone, just got sleeved yesterday (14 hrs ago). Pain from actual incisions is minimal, but having anything other than a tiny sip of Water (ie jello) hurts stomach like heck. Gas pains are also really painful and come in waves but they are in my stomach haven’t spread upward. I’ve burped a few times but currently pacing my hospital room waiting for the other milestone :). Can’t believe I actually did it!good luck to everyone else who has had their surgery and who are still waiting!

So I just finished my first day of the 2 week liquid diet. Not easy and it’s just the first day, but I think I can do this.

I smoked for over 50 years before my surgery. Quitting cigarettes (14 months ago) was by far the hardest thing about this entire process, but also the best thing I've ever accomplished. I still miss cigarettes every single day -- but I'm more determined than ever not to smoke again. Now I'm breaking the chains of morbid obesity, too. I'm all about the freedom, baby!

Hey, me too. My surgeon just explained to me today that he creates a 32 French bougie, which is nice and small. We are so lucky! I can lose up to 75% of my excess weight. Some surgeons make the pouch too big, so weight loss is much slower.

Hiya, yes a fine line between taking responsibility for yourself and blaming oneself for everything isn’t it 😊 One thing for certain, changing mindset sounds easy but takes time and work. I have a tendency to slip down the negativity rabbit hole as well…catching my ‘self talk’ (especially in the dark watches of the night) is a good habit to build. But having the chance for this surgery is amazing (scary but amazing). My surgeon said to me ‘it’s not your fault that you’re overweight, obesity is a disease’. That blew my mind to hear a respected medical professional saying that to me. TBH I do still blame myself a bit, being fat ain’t fun, but the very fact that we, as a group, are doing this thing shows that we are taking responsibility for our health and wellbeing and doing what it takes to sort it out. So, there we are, we are super humans who are focused on action and not just sitting in a sad heap not knowing how to sort ourselves out. Kudos to us.

Every post-op here was once a pre-op, so on that basic level we can relate. Some of us started at a lower weight than you, others at a higher weight. Not all of us had hip or knee replacements, but those that did can relate, and those that didn't can relate to the chronic pain we suffered anyhow. I'm sure some number of folks here have experienced the same combinations of diagnoses and interventions that you have. A lot of others come close.
One thing most of us learned is we are not as unique, nor are we as alone as many of us thought.
    Good luck,
    Tek

I was put on a Keto diet plan by my dietician for the 2.5 weeks pre surgery & I was ever so grateful. One friend was on 3 shakes a day for two weeks while another was on 2 shakes plus 1 high Protein low carb meal for 4 weeks. Which ever plan you’re given stick to it. It starts the process of re-examining your food habits & making better food choices so you can take the best advantage of your surgery.
Good luck with your surgery & on your journey.

Hey. We NEED a bariatric food critic. I was just saying that on another thread. At least I do need someone to tell me what’s good and where to go for stuff that I can actually eat. I need variety and Thats tough. Please please start a thread post surgery when you can eat normal food again with products and restaurants, etc. a bariatric friendly food critic.

Soo, I’m pre op and today is my husband’s birthday, so I’m doing the last supper thing and sitting down at a fancy place for a lovely lunch (venison salad so not too bad…until the tiramisu…but anyway) we were chatting about the journalism course that I have applied to start in July….there are so many options out there for writers….and I suddenly had a brilliant thought “ wow…I could be a food critic”….husband looked at me sideways “if there’s one thing that you won’t be able to do…” “oh, yes. Dam”
Anyone else got any funny stories to make us all smile?
