I gained weight during my pre op thanks to the inept nutritionist. I lost 18lbs the first month on my own diet and he insisted what I was doing (low carb) was wrong and not sustainable long term. I followed his plan to a T and just kept gaining and gaining. My surgeon told me I could stay the same weight but not gain, so I ended up going 1-2 days a week with zero food just to be sure I’d keep my weight the same for weight ins for pre op. It was a horrible experience and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. I was accused of lying about my food intake, had my phone ripped out of my hand while the nutritionist went through my fitness pal trying to find something to throw in my face on what I was doing wrong. He concluded my weight gain was due to the Protein Bar I was eating for Breakfast because he didn’t know the macros (it was on my tracking app and I showed him the physical bar in my purse). Instead, he said I must eat Quest bars that were higher cal and less Protein. Talk about an eye roll. My last visit with him ended in him telling me I was lying about having a surgery date and me almost leaving in tears.

In my program (MGH in Boston), the pre-op period was less about weight loss and more about building healthy habits. They told me to focus on Protein and Fiber with every meal and snack, make sure I didn't go more than 5 hours without eating, and sip on Water all day long. I'll say it was very helpful to me. And once I filled up on the protein and fiber, a lot of the foods I thought I was going to miss just weren't an issue. Until the 2 week pre-op liver shrinking diet started. Then everyone looked like a walking breadstick or slice of pizza to me.

I am having such a difficult time loosing weight pre-op is not even funny. Has anyone experienced this phenomenon it can be due to anxiety, bad patterns of eating etc. can you share you experience and how did you overcome it?

Ha ha ha! Actually, just be yourself. Most men have dad bellies and man boobs. If you are yourself he will feel better about being himself. If he’s not nice, kick him to the curb, or better yet make him dress up in the outfit above.

I take zoloft for antiexy. I've researched a bit on the internet and found that once you do a Gastric Bypass your psych meds will actually work differently. I wanted to know if anyone who has gone thru surgery had any experience with this. Thank you all in advance.

I also have bipolar disorder and my surgeon and psychopharmacologist both suggested I do sleeve rather than bypass, which I wanted due to possible GERD. I don't take anything that is extended release, but they still felt it would be better for absorption. I got a second opinion from a different surgeon, and she didn't think I'd have any problem with bypass, but she still recommended sleeve as it's an easier operation. I decided to go with sleeve... I'm still nervous about the surgery upending my mental health, but I am taking the risk to be able to be more active.
Just stay in touch with your mental health providers so you can let them know right away if you're starting to struggle.

The bird maybe nesting. This happened to me a couple of months ago, birds singing at night. I was super annoyed. Then I found a little nest with eggs in my hanging fern 😂

@lizonaplane Yeah my doctor just told that is my body act works even had my urologist look at it and no issues with my prostate I know that is a huge factor specially for men over 40. I am a coffee head, but I usually stop my last cop before 3 pm. I will just have to wait and see how is turns out for me. And congratulations your on your upcoming surgery.

Some context. I struggle with insomnia (I take lunesta and magnesium) sleep apnea (using my cpap) and because of diabetes I wake up from 3 to 5 times a night for a bathroom break. Lunesta and Magnesium are my combo to get at least 3 hours of continuous sleep. I know that sleep apnea improves after surgery. How about insomnia and getting up at night do to diabetes? Has anyone else experience any improvement with this?

Turmeric is supposed to be very good too. Many add turmeric to their coffee but that’s a no go for a while but maybe add the spices to your broths, Soups or shakes & see if they taste ok. Green tea is good too & able to be drunk on most post surgery plans.
Problem is many of the anti inflammatory diets recommend foods you can’t eat for a while after surgery. But you will be avoiding foods that stimulate inflammation.
