Lefti reacted to JAKE H in never been happier 2 years later....almost.
Coming up on 2 years post op and life has never been better. The gastric sleeve opened up a world to me that i thought would never exist. Ive learned so much about health, nutrition and exercise, that i wouldnt have if i didnt take the first step with the sleeve. I have a healthy relationship with foods now. I try to keep myself to the 80/20 rule. But i probably am closer to 90/10. Make good choices 80% of the time, and enjoy some of my favorite things the other times. Its funny tho, a lot of my favorites have no become healthy choices. So that makes life easier. I started this journey first just focusing on losing the weight. So for the first year i ran a lot and set a goal to run a half marathon. i completed that last may and then began to switch my focus to putting on muscle. This was hard because it meant i had to up my calories which for anyone in our situation, is a scary thing. So i bought a WHOOP strap and really dialed in how many calories i was burning and spoke with my nutritionist about a plan to get where i wanted to go. (whoop strap is apparently the most accurate fitness tracker out right now and ive found that my apple watch says i burn 800 more calories then the whoop says. just a heads up. IT wasnt easy but ive been doing it and got on a great routine. My lowest weight was 208. i now hover between 225-230. i weigh every few weeks but dont get too obsessed with the scale anymore. i know that if i stay within my calories that im fine. Its been a process and i had to learn a lot. it wasnt all easy but 110% worth it. This surgery opened a whole new life for me. I am extremely greatful.

Lefti got a reaction from lizonaplane in Question about hair loss after sleeve
My hair started really falling out around 3-4 months. I had really thick hair, so no one has noticed. I asked my surgeon about Biotin, and he basically said it's like throwing money out the window. He said to make sure I get my Protein in and take my Vitamins. I was definitely freaking out for a while when it started, but it seems to have stopped now.

Lefti got a reaction from lizonaplane in Tracking vs mindful/intuitive eating?
Right after surgery I weighed and measured everything to make sure that I was getting the correct amounts. After I learned what those amounts looked like on a plate I moved more to intuitive eating. Before I take my first bite I make a plan in my head how much I'm going to eat and also try to pace myself slowly if I'm eating with other people at the table.

    Hey July 2021 Surgery People!
It has been a while since we've had any updates on everyone's progress.
I reached a BIG milestone today & am excited to say that I am 100 pounds down.
Overall, things have been going well.
Have I been perfect? No. Could I possibly have lost faster? Probably.
Some of the things that I have struggled with are getting enough Protein & water/fluids in. I also recently noticed some grazing was returning when I would prepare my kids' snack. I also feel that I need to exercise more.
When I started I was so strict about following the plan as best I could. I know I don't need to be perfectly following everything to a T, but know I don't want to let old habits return or lose out on this weight loss window.
I started trying to focus & Proteins & fluids again. I want to start habit tracking again to try my best to follow my food & activity plans. I also want to increase fruits & veggies. (I recently read 2 of Dr. Matthew Weiner's books and realize I need to try to incorporate those foods more)
Some of my "go-to" foods and drinks currently are: yogurt (light & fit greek), nuts, cheese, fruits, craisins/raisins, salads, chicken, shrimp, crackers, unsweetened iced tea, hot coffee, & iced coffee. I sometimes add unflavored Protein Powder to yogurt & coffee.
I still have at least 20 pounds that I want to lose. I am also realizing that maintaining the loss will probably be hard work, as that is obviously something that I was never able to do before. When I get to where I want to be, I know this is when I will need the most support.
So, I'm just wondering how everyone else is doing?
How much have you lost? Are you at goal? How much to go? What are you struggling with? What works for you? What are your go-to's? Favorite exercises or activities? Products, advice or tips to share? Fears?
Wishing everyone well, hoping you are feeling good, & are at or closer to where you want to be.😁🍀👍

Don't even mention having a procedure. Start talking now about switching to a Keto diet (Your future diet will match that story. Also mention going to the gym or starting some exercise program. That's what I did, and no one questions me.

Had my surgery July 15, 2021. Down 68 pounds. In November I hit a stall that lasted well into the first week of January. I just started losing again last week.
I am happy with my progress and still hopeful I will hit my target eventually.
Would love to hear how others are doing.

I had a small NSV today. I put on a size large t-shirt and it actually fit! This is surprising to me as I am a slow loser and thought it would take longer for this to happen! I've had other victories but this one stuck me as the shirt I tried on has been in my closet for years....and I can finally fit into it!! I can't wait until I shrink into the rest of my clothes!
Many best wishes and small NSV's to you all!

I now find that most people don't pay as much attention to what we're eating as we thought they did! They only notice if you don't eat at all. I just put a little bit of everything on my plate, eat what I want and throw the rest away. Nobody really cares if you clean your plate or not! They aren't paying attention!

UPDATE: My doctor said that my BP is perfect, and most likely he said this feeling was my body responding to a lower blood volume due to weight loss. He also said to make sure that I reach my Water goals (which I do).

I had my surgery 7/12, and have lost 38lbs since my pre-op diet. Eating is going fine, struggling to get all the Water in. I just bought some jeans 2 sizes down from what I was wearing pre-surgery.

You feel low on energy because your calorie intake is far lower than you're used to consuming. Make sure that you are getting your Protein intake that your dr recommended. I'd skip the broth and substitute something with protein. If you're drinking liquids slowly you probably won't get the full feeling because it's moving through your pouch. Doesn't sound like anything is wrong. The more you heal, it's easier to drink liquids without feeling that strange stomach feeling.

10 months post-op here. I'd suggest toning down the rhetoric just a tad.
I was advised / directed to observe 12 months off of all intoxicants. I've been good with that. I've had a few sips from my wife's glass, but nothing more than that, really. Funny thing is that I did some rather successful cultivation and infusions this year since it became legal to do so in my state. Great results, but I've avoided trying ANY of it. Really looking forward to January when I can allow myself the space to do that.
On the technical / education side of things, I was informed that the recommendation to avoid intoxicants for the first year post-op is for a few reasons. First is that most of us didn't get to a pre-op condition by living a balanced life. And if we're going to successfully avoid using food as "medication" or for anything other than nutrition, it's very easy to transfer that pre-op behavior to something else. Intoxicants are an easy substitute to fall into, and a year of avoidance can help us find other more healthful habits, instead. As for me, I've been written a lot more music this year, among other things.
Second is that alcohol is very caloric (or calorific for our overseas friends). So taking in those empty calories isn't going to help us down the path of reduction, especially if one is already finding it challenging to take in sufficient Protein and Water to keep up with targets. I don't know about you all, but that's still something I have to be very mindful about. Protein and Water. That's a mantra I've had to internalize.
Third is that alcohol and other intoxicants can lead us to "let go" of our self-control and discipline around what else we're putting into our bodies. And some of those behaviors contributed to our getting to our pre-op states, to begin with. No point in going back to them post-op, at least without some mindful examination, first.
For those three reasons (and others any of us could come up with), I have found the 12 month abstinence target is an easy to remember / explain rule of thumb ("I had some surgery in January and I'm off of alcohol for a year." - You'd be surprised how often the conversation / questions stop right there). It's a bit of a drag sometimes, but "eyes on the prize" seems to win out when I'm doing my in-the-moment evaluations.
Best of luck and healthy outcomes to you all!

    Top: 320
    Pre-op: 296
    10 months post-op: 225
Goal: A long and healthy life. It's not so much about the numbers for me.

You really should check with your doctor, because many doctor's have different plans post-op. My doctor recommends 80g of Protein per day, and the largest amount to take at any time is 4oz. Soup was not part of my choices, except a tiny bit right after surgery. And yes, everything needed to be liquid or very mush like scrambled eggs.
