And that's why it's so hard to share this with others. Even my mom was a little less than encouraging the first time I mentioned it to her. She just said that I needed to talk to my sister since she had it.

But back to my thought, as soon as I tell some, they say "Say good-bye to your beer", or "You know you can never have xyz again.", or "I'm losing weight the natural way.", meaning their way is the right way and I'm taking the easy way/cheating. To those, you can either laugh it off or try to enlighten them.

Another idea that I learned from someone on a post a while back: if you had any other medical condition, and sought treatment for it, are you obligated to be truthful with anyone who asks about you? Such as mental health—does anyone deserve to know that someone takes medication for depression?

Up to you! No one’s business unless you want them to know. I said I was having surgery, and when I returned to work, basically said I was eating differently when asked about the weight loss. (Which makes me uncomfortable to have people ask about my body)
I had tried and failed so many years that I didn’t have confidence WLS would work. If I didn’t lose weight, I figured people would say that I was such a glutton that even surgery wouldn’t help. If I lost weight, people would say I took the easy way out.
I did tell my husband and two family members who protect my privacy.

I hate Protein Shakes, too! After surgery, they tasted too sweet and made me vomit.
I tried to get my Protein from savory foods at first. Bone Broth with canned chicken, chewed very well, worked. However, initially I was not able to eat enough of this.
What helped me was finding an unflavored Protein Powder, and mixing it into Soup, cream of wheat, etc. Try Syntrax unflavored protein powder.

You will experience stalls. You will lose some hair. You will experience Constipation. Your taste buds & sense of smell can become temporarily extra sensitive making some foods taste or smell awful. You will experience loss of energy, feel weak & tired. You may experience some blood pressure drops. You may still feel hungry (real or head). You may not feel hungry at all nor be interested in eating. Your tummy will be sensitive & can be fussy about certain foods one day & fine with them the next. You may vomit or be nauseous. Multivitamins can make you nauseous. You may experience the foamies - spit up thick saliva & maybe regurgitate the last bite or two of what you ate (generally happens if you eat too much, too quickly or food that is too dry or coarse)?
They may only happen to you a couple of times or not at all. But you can trust they do get better & pass. Stalls break. Hair regrows. Food taste yummy again. Some things pass pretty quickly. Some take a little longer & others we learn how to manage (like constipation & the foamies).
These experiences are all part of the process. Not because you’ve done something wrong or are failing as some think & beat themselves up about. We’re experiencing a lot of psychological & physiological stress: the surgery, healing, recovery, our changed & reduced diet, the head battles, reassessing the how & why we eat, etc. They ‘re just how our body reacts to cope with the stress.
And you can rely on: We all lose weight at our own rate. The more you have to lose the faster you’ll lose to begin. The closer to goal the slower your rate of loss will become.
Hope I haven’t scared you. Rather you be prepared than go through the anguish of doubting yourself because you didn’t know. I’d rather go through those things for a few months then be obese. It’s all very much worth it.
    All the best.

It will get so much better! It took about 5-6 months before I completely felt back to normal, as far as doing physical things.
When you resume a more normal diet, you will figure out the Snacks that will tide you over between meals when you are out. for me, it is grapes, cheese sticks, and Keto Protein Bars. Or, I use the time that I am out to take care of the majority of my fluids for the day.

My endocrinologist actually recommended bariatric surgery in part because of my metabolic syndrome. He said he had many patients have success with surgery in reversing those health issues and getting off those medications. It’s one of several reasons I’m going through the process now.

Hi, I'm considering bariatric surgery. I've been on a medication for decades and have ended up weighing 250 lbs at 5'3". I can't stop taking this medicine, and there are no alternatives. And as with everyone here, no weight loss or exercise plan has helped me lose weight and keep it off.
So...as a result of taking this med, I have metabolic syndrome. That means high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, and obesity.
I've finally come to the conclusion that bariatric surgery might be my best solution.
Has anyone else conquered metabolic syndrome (or any of these symptoms) with bariatric surgery?
    Thank you for your advice!

It’s trial and error really. Certain brands upset certain people. For some people it’s the Iron. The one thing that seems to really help os taking with food or a shake. But wait till after your done eating and like the last couple of sips of the shake. You want the whole thing coating your stomach before you take it.

I did everything I could both pre and post surgery with hair supplements and collagen support supplements, and am still religiously taking them now. Still didn't stop Hair loss. It MAY have helped in how much I lost, but I'll never know because I have nothing to compare it with. I started losing hair from month 4 until about month 7. Now I'm just waiting for it to grow back, and hoping the supplements will assist with that. Just gotta be patient.
Beyond that, cutting my hair off into a cute pixie has made my loss a lot less noticeable, especially to myself! A good cut will honestly make all the difference.

From what I have heard nothing really helps with the loss. What happens is the cycle is sped up and you just shed the hair faster than normal. Most of those products will make the new hair growing in nice and healthy and thick but they won’t make slow the shedding or speed up the growth. Some people get a cute shorter cut to try distract from the issue.

Our bodies all recover differently. Best advice I can give is to give in and rest and take naps as needed. Your body recovers while you sleep so the more you do it now when your body is calling out for it the quicker you will recover in the long run.

As far as food for energy, you may or may not be able to talk them into letting you bring in a Protein Shake but when you get a little further out you can usually sneak in a beef Jerky or a Protein Bar for longer outings where you truly can’t find a healthy option.
Post surgery I ALwAYS have a cooler in my car packed full of healthy options I can run back to even if I don’t expect to be out all day. If I leave the house, I’m ready for hours with my Yeti packed just in case. And I always bring my favorite Salad Dressing and my sugar free BBQ Sauce with me so if I have to do fast food I don’t have to use their high calorie sauces. I find several healthy options at Chick-fil-A. Any of their Salads with grilled chicken or grilled nugget kids meal with fresh fruit.

I did not give the surgery the care it deserved. I think it was because of the 1 day hospital stay. It made it seem a more minor procedure. I also didn't realise the time it would take a woman my age and disability to recover. I didn't start bouncing along till I got to the 4 month mark. I needed nana naps during the day and if I had a busy day I knew about the next day.
Cut yourself some slack when you can. It will take as long as it takes

I'm just amused at how my own perception of the space I take up hasn't caught up with how much slimmer I am. I still inwardly flinch at the sight of close-packed tables and chairs at a cafe or restaurant before I realise I can slip through no problem now! I still get out of people's way when there's plenty of room and I no longer need to - it's still a reflex. My brain is so used to being spatially aware for a morbidly obese body that it's taking a surprising amount of time for it to catch up to a much smaller me. I'm constantly amazed I can slip between cafe chairs and tables now without a) other folks doing the shuffle so I can fit past, or b) risking my arse moving inches from someone's face as I knock tables on the way through with a chorus of "sorry!"s.
What are some things that have snuck up on you that your mind hasn't caught up with yet?

Esi reacted to ShoppGirl in Meal preppers - looking for some advice/suggestions
I don’t really meal prep but I will make extras of the Protein when cooking. Especially chicken which later becomes salad or pizza toppings or tacos, etc. same thing with steak which can become fajitas or a great salad. I suppose meal preppers would take this further, make even more and freeze some for a rainy day. Also, if you just don’t like to cook which I don’t really you can get rotisserie chicken from the grocery and throw together many simple meals from that. I am super picky and don’t eat a big variety but I will make it into chicken salad, chicken tacos, chicken fajitas, stuffed peppers, white pizza (cauliflower crust) and of course you can have just chicken with a veggie of your choice. You can even buy it at Walmart deli now already pulled off the bones. How cool is that.

As a licensed Christian minister, here would be my response to them.
In Matthew 5:29-30, Jesus said "If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell."
Jesus clearly endorsed the idea that you need self-control by almost any means necessary. He said that if your hand leads you to sin, be willing to cut it off. If your eye continually leads you to sin, be willing to gouge it out. So if your stomach leads you to the sin of gluttony, shouldn't you be equally willing to have it surgically altered to prevent such a sin?

I'm almost 60. I spent 40 years trying to diet and exercise it away. It never worked for me. I'd lose 40 or 50 or even 60 pounds, and it'd come right back on. Again and again and again. My only regret is that I didn't have this done several years ago.
