    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I live on that stuff. It's what I chose last year to replace my diet soda habit, and I drink quite a bit of it.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I've done a lousy job with the two-week LS diet, and I'm extremely nervous that my surgeon won't operate. I'm constantly telling myself that worrying won't help, he'll either proceed or he won't, all I can do now is be super-strict about the no-solids-for-48-hours-prior rule.

I did, too. Five more days for me. I'm about to jump out of my skin, I'm so excited. Hard to believe that a week from today I'll be home from the hospital.

What to add to meat to increase moisture?

I haven't tried this peanut sauce made with PB2 yet, but I'm looking forward to it to moisten chicken: https://eatplant-based.com/creamy-peanut-sauce/

    Pureed foods

Approved on my plan: lentil or black bean soup (pureed in the blender), scrambled eggs, Greek yogurt (no fruit bits), small-curd cottage cheese, mashed banana or cooked carrots with protein powder. All in pea-sized bites chewed to applesauce consistency.
  11. I'm looking forward to treating myself to a dude ranch vacation once I get down to a horse-friendly weight.
  12. Let me get this straight. You're seeking permission from strangers on the internet to break your surgeon's rules, less than one week post-op? And calling approved liquids (an entirely appropriate temporary restriction) "unreal"? <sigh> Good luck. Sounds like you're gonna need it.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Now that I'm calming down from the initial rush of finally getting a surgery date, I'm in list-making mode. (I'm really big on lists, because what I don't write down, I tend to forget.) Which questions to ask my surgeon at my pre-op appointment, what to pack in my overnight bag, how to arrange transportation to and from the hospital, etc. One thing I really want to do is take (or ask my sister to take) some pre-op photographs of myself so I'll have some to compare as I lose weight. This one's hard for me, because I've avoided cameras for decades. But I'm sure I'll want to see the difference as my inner sylph emerges! (See my screen name? Does it make more sense now?)

    Secret

I'm a huge fan of privacy, but not of lying. I'd say "I'm having a procedure" without specifying which one, then change the subject.

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

WoooHOOOO! I just received word a few minutes ago that my insurance has approved my surgery, and that the clinic (which has been backed up for weeks due to COVID) has tentatively scheduled my RNY for March 3. That's only three weeks away! I've been working toward the surgery since January 2021, so this news is more than welcome. I'm crossing my fingers for no more delays, and an unremarkable procedure.

    Wooooah, I'm halfway there...

I'm so happy for you! Congratulations to you and @GradyCaton your terrific halfway-there accomplishments.

    Getting past the gatekeeper

I feel your pain. Eight months since my first appointment and I can't a straight answer on the status of my insurance approval from the patient navigator. I understand that they can't perform any RNY surgeries due to COVID, but that doesn't mean the entire practice should come to a halt.
  19. If your listed BMI of 38 is current, it's way too early to lose hope. Congrats on your great work so far, and best of luck reaching your goal.

    Food Before and After Photos

I'd love to have your recipe if you're willing to share it, @ms.sss. (I love dacquoise, and think everything about it is yummy, including the word.) Yours looks fabulous!

Post op - Liquid Only - Suggestions?

Yes, temperature can make a surprisingly large difference in how satisfying liquids (and solid foods) can be. When protein shakes are hard to get down, for example, I find them more palatable shaken with plenty of ice.

    Got Medicare approval!!!

Congrats! I'll bet the time will fly now that you have a surgery date.

    Breakfast

Just in case you didn't know this -- the Premier protein cafe latte flavor pre-made shake contains caffeine, but the powder doesn't. It might be worth trying the powder to see if you tolerate that better.

    Disgust to food

Yes, food aversions following gastric bypass are common. Here's a page that lists some studies: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21197604/
