KiwiJim got a reaction from Shrink&Grow in June Surgeries
Today's the day. 6 hours to go.
I didn't find the month long preop Optifast diet to bad except for the headaches on day 4 but after that I didn't feel hungry at all. I have really gotten into walking whilst on the diet and have lost nearly 15kg (33lbs).
I have had a few people say to me why bother having the op now that I have lost the weight and just continue on the diet. It did make me question my decision for a while but I new I wouldn't keep the weight off.
I'm now hoping for a smooth op with No complications.
Good Luck to all you other guys with ops this month.

KiwiJim got a reaction from STLoser in Lying about not getting surgery is awful
I am the Manager of a Serviceman's Club in New Zealand & I have told everyone that I'm getting a gastric sleeve next month. People are used to seeing me at the Club after hours with a beer in my hand. Since I have given up drinking alcohol and am drinking Water instead everyone asks what's wrong with me. So I tell them that I need to get rid of my Diabetes and sleep Apnea + the excess weight so hopefully I can extend my lifespan. Everyone has been 100% supportive and if someone ever wasn't supportive then they aren't worth talking too.
I am proud that I have finally done something to improve my health.

Hi Everyone,
I finally got my surgery date for June 8!!!
It’s really strange to me how excited I am about this!
I would love to share this journey with others scheduled in June!
I think it would be so helpful if we can help each other through this experience!

I struggled with the tell or don't tell issue, and finally decided to be honest with family and friends. I didn't want the stress of making up some "I'm doing keto" story or something like that. And after a lot of thought, I decided that I really don't give a flyin' flip what anybody thinks about my surgery. If they don't like it, I couldn't care less. And as it turns out, I haven't gotten any negative reactions. People have really been supportive. If they disapprove, they haven't told me to my face, so I at least haven't had to listen to negative garbage. But to each his own. I can totally understand wanting to keep it under wraps. When I was younger, I probably wouldn't have been so open about it, but I'm now at an age where I don't give a hoot what anybody thinks about me! 😉

KiwiJim reacted to RickM in Abdominal Hernia
It likely depends upon where the hernia is. As noted, if it's a hiatal hernia, where the stomach is being pulled up through the abdominal wall, that will be repaired along with your WLS as they pretty much can't do one without the other. If it's elsewhere on the abdominal wall, then it may depend upon where it is and whether it's in the way of the WLS procedure; something like an umbilical hernia they will usually fix at the same time as they often cut through that area to do the WLS. If it's elsewhere on the abdominal wall that's not directly in their way, then they may or may not fix it; from what I have seen, they will usually fix it even if it's not directly in their way to avoid putting you through the stress of another anesthesia event and recovery.
I would certainly prefer to get both done at the same time, but there may be extenuating circumstances as to why that isn't appropriate in your case, or it may just be your surgeon's preference (does he get paid more by doing two procedures?) If you have the opportunity in your health system, I would get a second opinion on it from a different surgeon - maybe he agrees with the first (ideally) or maybe he has a better idea, or doesn't have a problem doing both at once.

Is it a hiatal hernia or an abdominal wall muscle hernia? Hiatal hernias can be fixed during your WLS. Abdominal wall muscle hernia repairs are often done as part of a Tummy Tuck.
