  1. Congrats!
pk88 reacted to lizonaplane in My first week post VSG
I had my surgery one week ago today. Here's what I've noticed:
    1) I'm down 7.2 lbs
    2) The pain was not so bad in the hospital but pretty bad the first few days at home, especially when trying to get up from lying down or when sitting up. Only minimal pain when changing positions now.
    3) I took 3 total narcotic pills once I came home
    4) The Constipation is real. I did not have a BM from two days before my surgery until 5 days after. This was despite two kinds of laxatives prescribed by the hospital. I ended up needing a laxative suppository and Miralax. The suppository helped me go in like 30 minutes. I'm now adding miralax and magnesium citrate on a daily basis. Drinking my 64 oz of Water has been helpful, too
    5) Drinking water or anything was really hard the first few days. No matter how small I made the sips, I still had pain in my chest, and then it felt and sounded like a demon was in there, growling, angry because he had been evicted from my stomach
    6) By day 7 (today), I can drink a full mouthfull of water or Protein Shake. It's easier to take my pills at night than it was, but it's still harder than before surgery.
    7) I do have hunger, but I'm eating less than 500 calories a day, so that's not surprising. I only need to eat a small amount like 2/3 of a yogurt or half a Protein Drink to feel full, although I need to eat every few hours
    8. Walking is hard. It makes my incision hurt a lot. I have walked around the block a few times, but I'm tired by the time I get home, and it's a short block. I can walk up the ten steps to the front door, but hills are hard
    9) I tried to do a bit of work today, just going through emails and responding to them, but after about a half hour, my head was swimming. I'm glad I took two weeks off!
    10) My parents were here for a week helping me out. They stayed in a hotel nearby. I didn't need them that much, but it was really helpful for things like laundry and the dishwasher and trash. And for company. But it was hard seeing them eat tasty food when I was just eating yogurt or Protein Shakes. I am still glad them came, because now I am bored and lonely

Doing well. Sunday marks 4 months since surgery. I’m down 52lbs since surgery and 67 since pre op diet started. food has begun to taste better to me which is both good and bad news. I reigned myself in after a holiday weekend with family centered around food. It was a good reminder that what got me to 277 lbs is still in and around me. Thankfully, I’m still only able to consume about 5-6 oz at a time. I drink a Protein Shake almost daily to bump up Protein as I’m not able to consume enough food to get there without. Am always working to get enough Water tho. All in all I’m great and so thankful I had this surgery.

I love hearing from you all!

I crossed into onderland yesterday. I am 14 weeks post-op tomorrow. Down 45.2.
Getting all my Protein and Water. No food issues. About 3-4oz of protein and I’m full. Makes it hard to incorporate veggies, but I try. 3 weeks until I go on vacation for 2 weeks. That will be the real test…
  5. Congrats!

Still doing well. No issues with any foods that I've tried. Depending on the food, I can eat about a cup or a little more now. Always stop when I start to feel that full feeling. I never push the limits or over stuff myself. Still basically follow the guidelines on the amounts of food I should be eating suggested by the nutritionist. And I make an effort to eat 3 times a day.
I do not drink nearly as much Water as originally suggested (I get in roughly 45 oz now, not 64, including my morning coffee) but I spoke to the nutritionist and surgeon about it and they said as long as my urine was light/clear, not to worry about it. And it is, so I don't.
Was cleared a few weeks ago to use weights but haven't started yet. I have however invested in a crosswalk treadmill that I found on FB marketplace for cheap. I walk for 30 min each day at a good pace of about 3.3-3.5 mph (using the crosswalk feature). I may start doing that twice a day soon.
And finally, as of today I am down 57 lbs since May 19th (surgery day) and a total of 75 lbs since March 1st.
Hope you all are doing well too!

My surgery is August 31st but I figure it is close enough to track progress with September? Maybe? About a week to go, I am down 19 pounds from my first surgeon visit.

A two-for-1 yesterday; an OOTD and an NsV.
OOTD of leggings and a tank to wear on a little spur-of-the-moment road trip to Niagara, where this statue of Nikola Tesla was screaming to be taken a pic with.
The NSV being that it took no effort at all to hop on (and jump off!) that statue base to get the pic. 100+ lbs ago, this would have been very challenging…and i probably wouldn’t have even tried, lol.

This advice is perfect! I'm almost 3 years out and the only things I still use are... a scale and Vitamins. But a food scale, blender, Protein Shakes, and lots of bottled Water were all good tools along the journey. I'd avoid buying a lot of anything or paying a lot for anything until you know you want it.

Volume is indeed slightly more accurate. But being a chemical engineer, I know that most foods are very close to the density of Water, so that one Fluid ounce equals one ounce by weight. I think you'll see more variability because of your tolerance for the kind of food than from the density differences.
Edit: In any case, you'll want to be very aware of when you're starting to feel full, which feels different after surgery. And when you get that feeling, stop eating. You may regret even another bite or two.

For me, a food scale is very important. I weight everything I eat, not for monitoring purposes, but to be sure I don't eat too much. At about 10 weeks from surgery, I can now eat about 8 ounces at a sitting.
I would caution you not to buy too much food before your surgery date. My tastes changed quite a bit after the surgery, and I still have 60 cartons of Carbmaster yogurt and 40 boxes of WonderSlim shakes that don't appeal to me at all.
During the puree phase, as Candace said, you'll want something to grind your food up. I found the my bullet blender worked well.

I agree with everyone else 300 seems low. I am to stay between 600-800 for the first year.

My Nutritionist told me it was fine to break my meals into 2 meals so I eat 6 small meals a day and am losing. I am down to 207 from 245 and I am one month and one day out from surgery.

I’m 11 weeks and 850-900. Which is on target based on what my nutritionist provided.
300 is WAY too low. 60 grams of Protein alone is 240 calories!!
Edit to add I eat 3 “meals” and 3 “snacks” a day and I’m consistently losing.
