OMG I can’t believe the time has finally come. I am down to my last day of liquid diet and I have to be at hospital at 5:30am tomorrow. To say I am nervous and elated would be understatements. Any last tips or advice?

I had the same thing. Lucky for me mine fell on Tuesday so they called on Friday but even then they said they may change it and if so it will be on Monday night so you really don’t know for sure till last minute. I’m sure it will be all you have planned for the day. Maybe have some craft of hobby you enjoy doing planned to occupy your mind while you wait the last few hours because for me that was when the nerves really set in. Good nerves but still enough to wake me at 2 am and keep me up.

I am scheduled for 3/22 Gastric Sleeve. I have been on a high Protein, low carb pre-op for one week, as prescribed by doctor,
I have Chronic Kidney Disease, Stage 3a, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and family history of cardiovascular disease. Currently, I am 22 pounds down from my absolute highest weight, and 15 pounds higher than my lowest weight. I reached my low right before COVID and regained those 15 pounds over the past year.
I also turned 70 during this past COVID year, however, I do not feel, act or look like an old person. I work full time and am active with my 5 grandchildren. I'm hoping that my comorbidities will disappear and that I can live as long as my role model: my 96 year old beautiful, smart, and graceful mother who is loved by her 7 great-grand-children.

I was the same, it got better! Someone on here gave me the suggestion of using an egg cup or shot glass for fluids, and setting a phone alarm to go off every ten minutes to remind me to drink. I am pleased to say I can now drink reasonably normally, it really does get better, but feels a bit grim at the time.

Before surgery I could not stand broth or cream of Soups but I was “craving” (head hunger) something savory so bad I decided to try it and it tastes great now. I am curious to see what other taste changes I have as I am able to eat more. The nurse practitioner said that most people find that they prefer healthier foods after surgery which would be great. Just FYI it’s a real thing for me at least.

I was a junk food slave...loved the worst foods possible...and you're 100% correct about your tastes changing. I was skeptical about this and thought people were just saying this...to motivate themselves away from unhealthy food...I thought it was purely Dumbo's magic feather. Nope...it's the real deal.
I still love and crave sugary things like donuts. candy still tastes really good, particularly chocolate.
But greasy stuff and fast food are just not what they used to be. Tons of things I used to love have absolutely no appeal.
Example... I used to love lasagna. Now, if I had my choice between a plate of lasagna and a bowl of vegetable bean soup...I'd go for the Soup every time. I used to love french fries. If I had a choice between an order of greasy fries and a baked potato with black Beans dumped over the top with salt and pepper...I'd want the potato...with green beans and a side of corn on the cob. If I had to choose between an Egg McMuffin and a bowl of oatmeal with nuts and berries...I'd go for the oats.
I used to hate beans and fish. Love them now.
I used to hate sweet potatoes. Love them.
It's super weird. If I were reading my own words three years ago, I'd think I was delusional and making crap up to sound reformed. LOL. But no, very honestly...I PREFER a lot of healthier stuff and it's wonderful to finally WANT what's good for me.

Hi all!! Checking in! I had bypass on March 3rd and then a freak reaction to the Levonox shot had me back in surgery on the 4th. It was pretty scary there for a bit so I didn’t get to home until the 7th. I’m onto puréed foods now and everything seems to be back on track ! Glad to see my fellow Marchers doing well! For those coming up, good luck!

Ok so far I have been extremelj lucky I am only on anti inflammatory and Tylenol and I don’t have a lot of pain. I am able to drink so easily that they gave me a little cup to slow me down. I can walk around short distances by myself. I am soooooooo thankful for all the tips people on this chat gave me to bring pajama pants, chap stick and dry mouth spray as I have used them all and they have resolved aloe of issues.

The hospital did give me chapstick too as well as toothpaste and toothbrush but of course I packed My own. The nurses here are wonderful. They are so attentive and so amazed that I had surgery today and am feeling as well as I do.
I am not out of the woods yet. They are considering a catheter as I am having trouble passing urine but they said it will not have to be left in just to drain my bladder for now as this is not unusual and I should be fine soon.

overall I am thrilled about my recovery and glad to be able to pass on the morphine they offered as it always makes me nauseous. I just wanted to check in and say thanks to all of you and let you know I appreciate all your kind words, tips and support. . 🥰

I don’t eat at restaurants very often but I got a card on Amazon for after surgery that asks the restaurant to allow you to order off the children’s menu or to purchase a half portion. It’s called a medical alert special menu request. Maybe that will help a little.
