My surgery is June 1st. Starting my preop diet this morning: replace 2 meals a day with Protein Shakes, eating only one lean meal/day. The postop nutrition guidelines the Nutritionist gave me states: phase 1 - Clear Liquids for 3 days; phase 2 -high Protein full liquids for 2 weeks; phase 3 - soft foods for 1 month; finally phase 4- maintenance (regular) diet for “lifetime.”

Just checking in, thought I'd share my experience thus far...
RNY surgery with hiatal hernia repair was May 11 at 1pm. I don't recall waking up until about 8pm... then the next thing I know it's 6am May 12.
I was very tired/sleepy throughout May 12. My foley catheter was removed about 10am May 12 and I was waking and getting up to pee about every hour and a half. Apparently, the Fluid drip I was on was quite a lot. I managed to eat a sugar-free popsicle, have a few bites of sugar-free Jello, and a few sips of broth that day. My belly felt like I'd done a 1000 sit-ups! I was able to walk the hall about three times. Received dilaudid once and norco three times throughout the day. Also had an upper GI done: drank a little contrast while they took pictures... all good, no leaks. sleep, sleep, sleep.
May 13 I woke still feeling woozy, tired, and belly was still painful, but not too bad if I didn't move. Felt slightly more awake as the day went on. Had a SF popsicle and some SF jello. Still peeing every hour and a half! Went home about 1pm. Slept through most of the day, waking only for bathroom use and sips of clear Protein Drink (Protein2O from Costco.) Took total of four doses of norco throughout the whole day and managed a BM in the evening.
Today, May 14, I feel alive again! Sipping Isopure coconut-flavored Protein Water with Crystal Light lemonade added, not bad. Took a norco this morning but that will likely be my last one. Belly only feels like I did 100 sit-ups now instead of 1000. Been wearing a "binder" since May 12 and have decided to wear it for at least the first week, though I was given no instructions about it.
A few other comments about my journey thus far: have been using infant's simethicone antigas drops every six hours as instructed. Occasionally pass gas, occasionally burp. NO nausea at all during this entire experience, YAY! Was asked by the curious Nurse Practitioner if I drink alcohol much (I don't) because the anesthetic had such a surprisingly long effect on me. Apparently my body just isn't used to depressants and didn't clear it very quickly. And I'm not too worried about getting in an appropriate amount of liquids yet because just one look at my hands shows that I'm still full of the IV fluids they were pumping into me, LOL.
    Feeling optimistic!!
(EDIT: Don't know why that QUOTE box is there at the beginning of my post.)

I am 10 days post op. The first week was challenging for me me because if nausea, but I am doing much better. I am still on liquids, but I start pureed foods this weekend—I have never been so excited for mashed potatoes! I am still tired and a little “weak” but I am only getting around 300 -400 calories a day. I got on the scale today, and I was shocked that I have lost 25 lbs since my pre-op liquid diet weight!! I am back in the 100s—overjoyed that I finally feel this was worth it! 🥰

My day too! I can’t wait to get this over with. I’m more scared of the nurses putting the IV needles in my hand than the surgery. Nurses have a very hard time getting needles into me. Good luck all the May 19th people! B

I'm baaaack. Well, sort of and only partially. I had my gastric sleeve and 3" hiatal hernia repair last Wednesday, 5/12 and am starting to feel more alive today. Yesterday was a veritable **** show. I traveled for my surgery and Saturday coming home was a long, horrible day of car rides and changing planes and I was exhausted! Filled with emotional turbulence already, I came home to a sick dog and all that goes with that. But, I allowed myself to just cry, rest, sleep when I felt like it. I carried around a glass of ice Water everywhere I went and sipped on broth and Pedialyte to maintain hydration and electrolytes. I've added in some Protein Shakes today (though not what my body needs just yet) and made a cup of egg drop Soup today also to increase Protein. My belly still feels hard and bloated, but I made myself walk both yesterday and today and IT DOES HELP! I had a lot of pain in my shoulders post surgery that is starting to improve, but still comes on when I burp or need to burp. I understand it is referred pain in the phrenic nerve from the carbon dioxide used to inflate the belly during surgery. Again, the walking seems to help. I won't win any medals with these walks mind you, but was told to get up and move my body to work that gas out of the tissue. No matter how much I think I know, how much I have read, how much you all have taught me, I am still going to have to experience this all myself and learn as I go. Hang tough everybody. We can do this!!

I had my sleeve surgery and hiatal hernia surgery on the 3rd. I promise it gets better. This has also been a real struggle for me mentally some days. Moving into the new phases of full liquids, and now different varieties of mushy foods has me feeling halfway human again. I’m learning this first month is a roller coaster emotionally and physically for a lot of us. Stay strong and know you are not alone in these feelings.

My surgery went really well. No nausea or vomiting yay! The surgeon repaired a 3 inch hiatal hernia as well as the VSG. Other that some pain where my drain is in my belly I’m doing great. I was up walking within a few hours of surgery... very slowly but helps move the gas around.

best wishes everyone and thank you so much for your well wishes. 🙏🏼

I have found that this process so far is truly mental and can be draining at times. I have gotten to the point on the pre-op diet where I’m not really hungry even for the Protein Shakes I just have cravings and smells get to me. Someone next door to me started their bbq grill and I about lost my mind lol. I have learned this far to respect food and not abuse it.

You do this for you and for your health! I'm afraid to tell my mom, one of my sisters and my gram for that reason. I'm afraid of their Negativity and I'm afraid of it effecting things. The guilt is real because I'm afraid of the what if something happens to me during surgery.

they gave me zofran for nausea so I was never nauseated or threw up. I would if I didn’t pay attention when I was drinking the broth or popsicle if I overate I think. It doesn’t take much at a time right now while things are swollen. I’m using a spoon instead of just drinking from a cup because I’m a gulper 😂 and don’t trust myself. 🙌🏼 I have this semethicone gel they gave me yesterday if I’m gassy. I have some with me I used that today once. I swallowed my first pill this morning and that went fine. Every 45 min i took the next pill i needed to take which for me was omeprazole for acid then an antibiotic then later i took my thyroid pill and around noon I took my Wellbutrin. I made 3 laps around the halls 3 times on my surgery day so I wasn’t miserable by any means. walk as soon as you have your self back enough to do it that is my best advice I think. They gave me iv fluids all day and night on surgery day and then until noon the day following it. They just called it off in case I needed more fluids but I was taking in plenty by mouth so they pulled it last night. I’m trying to think of anything else Y’all might want to know to help.
Surgery day i used that mouth spray to keep mouth moist because i wasn’t allowed to drinks they did let me sip swish and spit though. At 8 am the following day I got ice chips and could have a plain no fruit popsicles however much I wanted. I had a few sips of a slush last night and lots of ice all day and night. This morning at 6 am they brought me a small juice box they put in a cup with a spoon and i had all of it. I had part of a Gatorade Protein Drink this morning and ice chips and half of a small cup of broth. I’m full! Husband is eating a subway sandwich and I’m not even thinking about it. I’d normally be wanting some 😜😜

He gave me liquid hydrocodone and something for nausea and a patch for nausea and told me to fill them now. I will wear the patch to surgery. I am supposed to be going home the same day and then going to his office the next morning for postop. No one that I have talked to went home the same day. Pain management is something that I am worried about. I planned on going back to work 8 days later (desk job).
