Lol I just can’t with you. You’re literally not listening to, considering, or respecting anything anyone else has to say while expecting us to do the same for you and take what you say as fact. That’s “interesting” considering that your “facts” have been proven scientifically and medically wrong. You’re not even on the same page as the people you’re arguing with because you haven’t even tried to understand what they were trying to say. Lol. I’m unfollowing this conversation so don’t bother replying, I won’t see it. But in the future try to remember that as a community where we’re supposed to support one another we have to LISTEN to each other and respect others’ opinions and experiences, even if they contradict ours. You might learn something you didn’t know if you open yourself up to listening to others. Good luck on your journey 👍

I think she meant that you were assuming that your personal experiences apply to everybody. That might be your experience but not everybody experiences the same things after wls. You will feel both real hunger and head hunger as you’re losing weight, it’s part of the process. Your body has to be hungry in order to consume your fat. She meant that calling any hunger someone experiences on their weight loss journey “head hunger” is frustrating because our bodies are actually hungry too.

I understand what you meant about not all calories being equal but even if you’re only eating good calories you’re still experiencing a caloric deficit (which is necessary to lose weight) and will thus feel actual hunger. As well as the head hunger from not eating as much/the same things as you used to.

I don’t know why people are so easily offended and wanting to fight on these forums. Maybe it’s because we’re all hungry all the time 😂

I had an always-been-skinny friend who gained about 80lbs on the depo shot, and I’ve known of other girls who have gained a lot from it too. I’m glad it’s worked well for you but unfortunately substantial weight gain is a very common side effect with that one

Condoms? Won’t affect your weight and are pretty reliable. I can’t use hormones at all because they cause me to have seizures (I have epilepsy) so that’s what I’ve always used. You could also use a cervical diaphragm or sponge if you don’t want to do the condom, I know it can be hard to use a condom every time with a long-term exclusive partner, and those are also pretty reliable barrier methods that won’t affect your weight but feel a lot more “freeing” than a condom lol. When I was researching options my doc told me that the Nuvaring and the patch have by far the lowest side effects for hormonal birth control, and the copper IUD doesn’t have hormones so it’s supposed to have few side effects as well. Good luck!

Idk if you’re still struggling with this but you should definitely see a nutritionist. This is literally what they do and I think it would really help you get an idea of what healthy eating looks like for you individually. Good luck!

Circus321 got a reaction from Pinkbunny in Keeping surgery a secret? What did you tell others?
I’m getting a sleeve and haven’t had surgery yet but when I put in for leave at work I told my boss and coworkers that I was having part of my stomach removed due to ulcers (not entirely a lie, I do need it for that reason as well). I joked about how “at least I’ll lose weight as a side effect” and everyone was supportive and called me “lucky” to be losing weight as a side effect of a “legitimate medical procedure”. And then they all trash talked getting a bariatric procedure solely for weight loss 🙄. If you don’t feel comfortable sharing with anyone you certainly don’t have to, but if you want to maybe stretching the truth a bit will help it be easier to swallow for others. It’s so sad that weight loss procedures are shamed. We’re looked down on for being fat and then looked down on for doing the things we have to do to lose weight. It’s not fair

If you don’t want to tell them about having surgery you could say you had hernia/gallbladder surgery and then started the Keto diet? People usually lose weight fast on keto too and it’s a fad right now

I’m scheduled to get my sleeve in a month (yay!) but I’m afraid it’ll worsen my gerd. I’ve heard on here that some people get their hiatal hernias fixed when they get their surgery. Does having a gastric surgery automatically fix the hernia or is it something extra that your doctor has to do? I developed a tiny hiatal hernia over the last year and I’d like to have it fixed with my surgery. My surgeon knows about it but hasn’t mentioned anything regarding fixing it. Should I bring it up beforehand or is it something that gets fixed with surgery anyway?

He also mentioned medications and other non-surgical treatment options if it gets worse. I was surprised he recommended it too based on how all my research said not to do the sleeve if you have reflux problems. Idk, I’ll get a second opinion for sure

Circus321 got a reaction from StarJoy2021 in Is maintaining as hard after surgery as before surgery?
I’ve been able to lose weight from diet and exercise, my problem comes with keeping it off. At my lowest weight I got down to 173 and couldn’t lose another pound. But to maintain that weight I had to exercise at least 25 hours a week and eat no more than 1000 calories a day. I kept it off for a few years but eventually gained it back because that’s obviously not sustainable. If I get down to that weight with surgery should I expect to have to do the same things to maintain that weight as I did before surgery? Or will it be easier?

I did Keto for a while and it’s really hard the first few weeks but then after you get in ketosis it’s much easier. You can’t have bread at all on keto. The only carbs you should eat are green, non-starchy vegetables, which are easily under 20g of net carbs a day (net carbs=total carbs minus fiber). Focus on meat, cheese, and green vegetables. I lost a good amount of weight with keto but it gave me gallbladder and stomach problems so I had to stop and ended up 20lbs higher than I was before. So I don’t know if I’d recommend it, but that’s how to do it.

Your body feels actual hunger whether or not you have the actual sensation of being “hungry”. It’s physically impossible for your body to not be hungry and you to lose weight. So I’m not assuming, I’m stating a medical fact lol

At no point did I attempt to discount your experience. As a reminder, this was your first paragraph. I am sorry, but if that's you talking about your own experience only, then I'll eat my shoe. You start off by saying "when you're losing weight, your body is not hungry", and go on to use "us" and "we" multiple times. There are no I statements there. No "this is my experience" in the entire paragraph. There is not any "most people", "some people", or any language that would indicate you're not referring to a collective group instead of a subset. The fact that you keep insisting you were not generalizing and that you were only referring to your own experiences, is insulting.

I am well aware of the way the brain communicates with the stomach, and the hormones that get released. I also recognize that one of the triggers for hormone release is when your body is in need of energy, IE when it needs food. There are foods that can help you feel full longer, such as Protein, but that doesn't prevent the initial hunger trigger when your body needs energy. Now everyone's bodies are different. I fully believe that maybe some people don't experience actual hunger anymore after surgery. I have not once said otherwise. But those people are not what this thread was ever about (unless they were pushing their experiences onto others).
I also know that, scientifically speaking, the majority of people do need over 1000 calories to survive as a general rule. There are some exceptions, such as people trying to lose weight, but when eating so few calories it's strongly recommended to be medically supervised as it's well known that it can be dangerous to do. If you're an exception and you've discussed that with your doctor, then that's great. However, that is below most people's BMR. Stating that "we don't need 1000 calories to survive" is not only false, but can be very damaging to people who are at or below their goal weight who may not know better if they aren't medically supervised.
No one here has claimed that head hunger doesn't happen. Quite the contrary, many of us have given multiple examples of our head hunger. The rant was about the seeming denial of actual hunger as a thing on these forums. What you have done, and continue to do, is akin to coming into a place where someone is stating they're tired of people not believing they have depression cause they don't experience xyz symptom, and then you stating that people with depression have xyz symptom and then stating you have depression and you experience xyz symptom. It not only is tone deaf, but completely dismisses the original person's experience and feelings.
That being said, I won't engage with you further. You seem more hell bent on how your words are being perceived than actually contributing to the topic at hand. I was only really engaging to point out why your posts are not being well received, but you don't seem to care.

I'm fairly new here, but you did make a lot of definitive statements in your original posting. You claimed it's not about calories, but about energy. That 1000 calories a day aren't needed to survive. And that people don't feel actual hunger when they're eating at a calorie deficit (IE losing weight). You lead with the statement "...when you're losing weight, your body is not hungry."

When you're posting in a thread about how people's actual hunger keeps getting dismissed as head hunger, even though it's perfectly normal to experience actual hunger after surgery; then it seems like you are applying your experience to everyone, even if that was not your intention. That ends up feeding into the very problem the initial rant was about.
