  1. I guess everyone is different. I found myself telling a few lies about why I needed WLS, and now I have the courage to tell people to mind their own business if they are negative about it. It's my life, my body, my decision, and it's the best one I could have made.

    So there! Naaaaaaaah! 🙂

  2. A lot of people talk about head hunger, which I am just starting to recognise now (I am 10 weeks post op). I didn't feel any "hunger" or similar physical feeling for a long time, but I do feel empty in the morning. It is really hard to explain.

Sorry I can't say anything to help here. If you are feeling hungry have you tried small sips of Water? I remember being told that often hunger is actually thirst, but your brain doesn't recognise it from years of bad habits. Just a thought.

Good luck with recovery, I am sure you'll do well 🙂

How awful for you. Dumping is not as common with the sleeve but it does happen. For many it’s sugar or fat that will set it off. I’ve been fortunate & not had a full dumping attack. I had the symptoms just not too badly & it passed pretty quickly. For me it wasn’t sugar or fat that caused it but a Protein Bar that I’d often eaten without issue both before & after. Don’t know why it upset me that day.

I sometimes said my tummy was like a cantankerous two yr old who throws tantrums. I think my dumping experience was just another tantrum.

Give yourself a break from the foods you ate that day & the wine then try them again separately. That’s the only way to see if it was a particular food or even the rose that upset you or just your cantankerous tummy.

Thanks for the advice, I agree. I felt terrible on Friday, washed out on Saturday, had no BM's until about half an hour ago and boy that was terrible. I do think it's really not gone down well. Fingers crossed it's all gone and I can just have a couple of days on some bland liquids to reset.

I have to say, I thought I was having a bloody heart attack. The palpitations, racing heart, sweats etc were horrible.

late dumping syndrome is reactive hypoglycemia (also known as postprandial hypoglycemia). It's not that uncommon in RNY patients - I don't know about sleeve patients. It seems to start when you're a couple years out.

I am sure this is what I experienced on Friday last week, I'm a sleeve patient 10 weeks out. It was simply awful and I just had to sip Water and ride it out. It took about 2-3 hours until I felt somewhat normal again but very washed out.

  5. I am 10 weeks post op and so far have had a pretty good experience, taken all the advice and been very much a rule follower. On Friday last week we went to an annual Prawn Day fundraiser and I had one weetbix and zymil milk for Breakfast with no issue. At midday I had one prawn, half a moreton bay bug (very small lobster like crustacean) and one oyster. Probably a total of 1/3 to 1/2 cup of food. I had this over a period of half an hour or more, and well after half a very small glass of rose wine.

10-15 minutes after the oyster, I felt this god-awful rush to my face, breathlessness, rapid heart rate, dizziness, shaking and wanted to roll over and pass out. I had to go outside to the medical tent and sit on the bed (after assuring them I wasn't one of the drunken arses at other tables 🙂 ) and felt just horrible with the cold sweats. One of our lovely local police officers took me home and I recovered after about two or three hours.

I've read up and it sounded more like late dumping syndrome, where the body feels a rush of sugar to the system and releases a lot of insulin, resulting in a sudden dip in blood sugars. This is supposed to happen two-three hours after a meal so can only assume it was the weekbix.

Has anyone else felt like this after having such a good run of no real bumps in the road? I sincerely hope it wasn't the seafood, but it's the first time I've tried each of these items since surgery. I have had weetbix before and wine - not together of course - with no issues. I guess I am answering my own question, seafood/shellfish very likely to be the cause.

    Sigh.....

But I am one of the people having issues eating because when I try something it hits like a rock when I eat it sucks

I struggle to get over 500 to be honest. I'm a bit worried about it so my dietician said more mini Snacks between meals...which goes against my plan dammit! Snacks are what bite me in the backside when it comes to weight, and alcohol.

I am 9 weeks post Op today

  7. You are very much in the early stages, so please be patient. I know it's easy to say as I'm 9 weeks post Op today, but trust me you will recover.

I'm lucky I work from home and I still feel very fatigued if I don't nourish myself properly, or maybe have a glass of wine too many.

With swallowing, I mixed 50/50 apple juice and Water and sip sip sipped throughout the day. You can make a thin smoothie with low fat high Protein milk, and maybe some less sweet Protein Powder or even a bit of fruit, add a smidge of honey for sweetness and sip sip sip all day.

You have had major surgery, perhaps you need to take another week off work to put some more nutrition slowly into your body.

    Take care x

I have been on Clear liquid for 6 days. I haven't pooped in 6 days which has been weird. I guess I just don't have anything to poop out yet. Any similar folks out there that can share? I would like to hear from you. Thanks

Ooooh I have such a good tale to tell.....I was really worried because it would be at least 6-7 days before I pooped a pebble sized nugget! Seriously. I am 8 weeks post op, and three days ago I started to poop good and proper. And I mean satisfying, every morning the same time. My dietician said it would kick back in, so yippee for me. Haha, I have a little surge of self pride when I'm done on the throne!

It was my first time, and it was an immediate “ohhh nooooooooo!!” When I tell you I thought it was going to come through my nose if I breathed, I am not kidding. Honestly of all the binging and shoveling I’ve done throughout my life, double hamburger, large cheese fry, large Diet Coke in a sitting (and like 15 minutes 😬)... that was the most miserably full I have ever been. I guess our old habits die hard lol. Now I’m terrified to start the puréed stage.

Don't be, just take it super slow. When I went to puree it was really runny pumpkin Soup that I started with. I ate with a teaspoon and let it just sit in my mouth before I swallowed. Sounds gross, but I am super paranoid about feeling nauseas and vomiting so it worked for me.

I am 7 weeks P/O and I'm just starting to experiment a little more with textures. I have worked out that meat really isn't a good option just yet, aside from fall apart chicken if it's been in the pressure cooker. I get my Protein from tasteless Protein Powder, yoghurt and eggs. I know I'll never ever be able to have a lifestyle like before which suits me fine.

One surprise is that my tummy copes really well with rice wafers, those little snack crackers that are slightly salty. Crunch crunch then they go all soggy and they are a good filler.

Mischa, you and I are surgery buddies. I was sleeved the same day you were. I want to reiterate what Jaelzion said. Until yesterday I could not get more than 38 ounces of Fluid and 20 grams of Protein. I called my program and spoke to my nutritionist and she told me to aim for 50oz Water, mix it with some Gatorade zero or some kind of supplement with electrolytes and just fight it out until . I have, by the grace of God been able to avoid needing IV fluids; but these last 2 days have been hard on my actual body. I was getting 5000 steps a day (their goal for me til week 4) and today I couldn’t get out of bed. The weakness has been overwhelming today!!! Just keep sticking with it. It gets easier as your swelling goes down. I’m now able to take 2-3 small sips every 15 minutes. 2 days ago I couldn’t even get 20 oz of Fluid. Keep trucking!! I’m just a stranger but I believe in you!!!

however, today I tried my first Protein Shake since sx and out of my old “chugging habit” I took a GIANT gulp. I had to sit straight up for 2 hours until it went down. So please just go at your own pace. I’ve notice you’ve struggled too, although in different ways than I have. If you need anything please DM me, as we are on the same track and will be going through the same stages at the same time. Some of us need support and if you need it, I’m here! Keep fighting, it will be worth it!

    Goodluck!!

Oh god yes, I feel your pain...I had to giggle....I have done it so many times.....lesson learned.

  11. Yoohoo, I was sleeved on 4 January, and live on the sunny Gold Coast. Welcome to the forum, it's a great place to find out details you may not remember to ask your surgeon.

Remember, it's based on peoples experiences, and not so much medical so it's a pretty descriptive forum haha. So here is a bit about me...

My name is Janine and I work in IT - from home all the time now, quite a good thing after surgery! I have always been SUPER active with my weight fluctuating from 70kgs - a healthy weight - to over 100kgs. I was 97 when I finally bit the bullet and went to the surgeon. My food diary was very balanced, just waaaaay too much of it. I have back fractures from my own stupid behaviour on my jetski, which makes me nearly paralysed some days. The pain went as soon as the weight started coming off.

I am cranky and moody and such a b***h at times. My moods have definitely improved, but I think my husband will disagree with me there!

Post surgery was somewhat of a breeze. I feel full all the time, so getting food in is a challenge. Getting fluids in was really really hard....so I did a 50/50 apple juice and Water and that helped. I've had no nausea at all, just the feeling of being full. I am nearly breaking the 80kgs and my goal is 65kgs.

A little confession...I nearly pulled out when I was on the table. I'm glad I didn't.

Another confession - the day after surgery I thought I'd made the BIGGEST mistake of my life. I was being a drama queen and very precious...it's the BEST thing I have ever done.

Feel free to connect via messages here. I don't do social media any more so I'm not a facey or insta girl.

  12. No real pain as such, just a tender belly (to be expected) and no nausea at all. In fact they gave me ondansetron to bring home from the hospital, and I had only one the following day but more as a preventative.

I haven't had any vomiting or nausea since surgery, but I have had pain when I have had too big a mouthful or not chewed enough. I sit up straight or take a short walk around the house and it goes away.

Apparently, cutting into small, tiny little bites, and chewing forever is the key. LOL At least that is what I have got from everyone on here so far.

I remember reading something before surgery where those on the liquid or puree phase were commenting on how much they missed the chewing.......boy, it certainly isn't true for me haha.

  14. Well it was super cold... so i wore the emerald green sweater dress (again)..... boots. dinner we shared (stealing description straight from menu) Hudson Valley Fois Gras pan-seared and served over a wild mushroom ragout and port reduction, Filet MR and scallops with Gruyere & chive scalloped potatoes... dessert was a petit four. New diamond earrings studs (not the loops) and diamond "righthand ring". If anyone can help, i'd love to know more about the ring. All i know is its diamonds and blue enamel in white gold and that's it's older.

    You look gorgeous!

On a side note, my 24 year old son told me a few weeks ago how the make fois gras...... don't google it.....

  15. How funny, I was just talking to my hubby about this. I LOVE a good blue fillet steak.....

I would take one mouthful only, chew chew, add a sauce of some sort, and see how it sits. Volume is everything post op and I'm frequently overloading my tiny plate thinking I can eat more. I'm 7 weeks post op and can manage 2 tbs of food at a time. I have a quarter meat/protein, a quarter starch/carb, and half veges.
