    Calling all fellow Aussies!!

Yoohoo, I was sleeved on 4 January, and live on the sunny Gold Coast. Welcome to the forum, it's a great place to find out details you may not remember to ask your surgeon. Remember, it's based on peoples experiences, and not so much medical so it's a pretty descriptive forum haha. So here is a bit about me... My name is Janine and I work in IT - from home all the time now, quite a good thing after surgery! I have always been SUPER active with my weight fluctuating from 70kgs - a healthy weight - to over 100kgs. I was 97 when I finally bit the bullet and went to the surgeon. My food diary was very balanced, just waaaaay too much of it. I have back fractures from my own stupid behaviour on my jetski, which makes me nearly paralysed some days. The pain went as soon as the weight started coming off. I am cranky and moody and such a b***h at times. My moods have definitely improved, but I think my husband will disagree with me there! Post surgery was somewhat of a breeze. I feel full all the time, so getting food in is a challenge. Getting fluids in was really really hard....so I did a 50/50 apple juice and water and that helped. I've had no nausea at all, just the feeling of being full. I am nearly breaking the 80kgs and my goal is 65kgs. A little confession...I nearly pulled out when I was on the table. I'm glad I didn't. Another confession - the day after surgery I thought I'd made the BIGGEST mistake of my life. I was being a drama queen and very precious...it's the BEST thing I have ever done. Feel free to connect via messages here. I don't do social media any more so I'm not a facey or insta girl.
  2. No real pain as such, just a tender belly (to be expected) and no nausea at all. In fact they gave me ondansetron to bring home from the hospital, and I had only one the following day but more as a preventative. I haven't had any vomiting or nausea since surgery, but I have had pain when I have had too big a mouthful or not chewed enough. I sit up straight or take a short walk around the house and it goes away.
  3. Approaching 7 weeks post op this coming Monday.

I've been lazy with cooking, just having low fat convenient foods.  I am feeling lethargic and flat.  I forget my multivitamins all the time despite me putting an alarm on my phone.

Tonight I am doing a full months meal plan and getting my sh*t together!

Still losing, still happy with my decision to go ahead.  I just need to sort out my motivation!

    When can I eat steak?

I remember reading something before surgery where those on the liquid or puree phase were commenting on how much they missed the chewing.......boy, it certainly isn't true for me haha.

    Meal timeframes

I have about two tablespoons (heaped) of food, and it takes me about half an hour....chew chew chew. I am 7 weeks post op.

    OOTD

You look gorgeous! On a side note, my 24 year old son told me a few weeks ago how the make fois gras...... don't google it.....

    When can I eat steak?

How funny, I was just talking to my hubby about this. I LOVE a good blue fillet steak..... I would take one mouthful only, chew chew, add a sauce of some sort, and see how it sits. Volume is everything post op and I'm frequently overloading my tiny plate thinking I can eat more. I'm 7 weeks post op and can manage 2 tbs of food at a time. I have a quarter meat/protein, a quarter starch/carb, and half veges.

    I messed up bad

Oh I just saw you were 5 days post op .....

    I messed up bad

One of the recommendations from my dietician was to see a psychologist as part of the process. This tool is only one part of a lifestyle change, and not the easy way out. My foods were fine beforehand, but the volume I was eating was out of control. Also alcohol was a crutch for me too manage my extremely demanding life. So I have stopped drinking, and managing stress in other ways. If you aren't ready to make holistic changes, I would seriously reconsider the surgery and delay it. Find a bariatric specialised psychologist who can really delve into your dependency that I think you are eluding to. You can do this, believe me. But maybe not right now.... just my thoughts. Xxx
  10. I was about to say the same thing!

Drinking & Eating at the same time

If anything gets stuck, I have a sip and deal with a tiny amount of discomfort and it sorts itself out.
  12. I popped something on this site only a week ago regarding this but it might be hard to fibd....if you want to connect with me and have a look at my activitt feed it should be there (I am on my mobile so can't find it easily). I am 7 weeks post surgery and it is just my experience.
  13. I can't begin to tell you how many times I have read posts like these here, and I felt EXACTLY the same way. You have had major surgery, it is a bit of a bumpy road to recovery. Stay on top of pain relief, every 4 hours, and sleep sleep sleep.... trust the process and follow the surgeons instructions 100% Please check in here tomorrow and let us know how you are doing. Xxx
  14. I had no issues taking tablets at all the day after surgery. I guess it depends on how big the tablets are. My surgeon did a full medical assessment before surgery and said I would be fine
  15. This is a hard one to answer. In the big scheme of things, 6 weeks post op, I feel I've had it really easy. No vomiting or nausea, only mild surgical ache, a bit of surgical gas pain for a day.... but at the time it felt really shitty. Everyone is different, and I know you are probably fed up with reading that. The advice the doctor and dietician give you is super important to follow. That is going to give you the easiest outcome post surgery. Good luck x

    Gas! Ugghhh just Gassyyyy!

oh god YES I agree. After the first 4 weeks the constipation has finally gone, and I do believe it's when I started introducing more substantial solids. ie weetbix. I was crying one day on the toilet thinking I was about to break in two, sorry for the visual but that was just the worst day of my life ever. Let me give birth to a 12 lb baby any day!!! I also had pessaries bought from the pharmacy, and two coloxyl tablets with senna which is not only a softener, but also encourages bowel contracting to push out the rocks.

4 days post op and I’M STARVING!!!

I totally agree with this. I still every now and then think I am hungry, and I lean to the side and it corrects itself straight away. I am 6 weeks post op.

    Questions _ 2 weeks Post-Op

I found the same with water. Try half water half sugar free apple juice, and tiny sips. I mean teeny weeny. It will help your body adjust. Some people can't do eggs for a while, they arent easy to digest. If you must have an egg, for protein purposes, add it raw to your hot puree, it will cook in the heat and be all mushed up.

    what is everybody eating?

I am feeling the same, I was sleeved on 4 January. Today I am back on track thanks to planning. Breakfast is a very thick smoothie with a fruit of choice, frozen is fine, tasteless protein, zymil milk low fat (lactose free) some oats and juice from tinned pears. Lunch will be steamed to death veges and a scrambled egg. Dinner is half a chicken thigh and mashed pumpkin. I try to have natural protein sources at every meal where possible, or add tasteless prot powder.

    Binder - any recommendations?

    Binder - any recommendations?

I didn't have one, but I was given advice from a physiotherapist to hold my belt with a pillow if I needed to sneeze or cough....
  22. One month today I went in for sleeve surgery. One month....really?  It feels like aaaages ago.  What are the key notes in the past month:

    • being scared on the day was very real.  My surgeon and anesthetist were fabulous talking me through everything and listening to my concerns.
    • It was over before I knew it
    • Recovery from the GA was awful...the only time I have ever experienced anything like it.  12 hours later I finally came out of it properly
    • Gas pain is awful, but easily remedied by walking
    • Walking isn't as scary and painful as I thought, and I didn't get light headed at all
    • My water bottle has become my best friend.  I bought some new ones, one in particular with Llamas all over it 🙂
    • My husband won't let me get a pair of Llamas....dammit
    • Following my dietician and surgeons guidelines WORKS!  It really does
    • Scars on my belly are minimal due to using specific scar gel, helps healing and reduces scarring
    • If I have eaten too quickly, the best way to manage the discomfort is to stand up, or sit upright, and wait.....wait wait wait.  20 minutes later the discomfort has gone
    • Don't be scared to move to the next phase, just tiny tiny bites and don't drink with your meal
    • I have learned to really listen to my body.  Eat for satisfaction, not to be full.  The best advice I have been given
    • Don't forget multivitamins, it really does have an impact on fatigue
    • Try not to weigh daily, thought it's tempting
    • Scales are not always an indication of body change - TAKE PHOTOS!
    • My skin is quite dry, and it's loving the attention I am giving it.  Lots of moisturiser and my tan is the best it's ever been.  Not sure what the correlation is, but I haven't burned at all, just nicely browned
    • I had an initial breakout of rosacea on my face, but that is likely to be from the shock of surgery and much less food than usual.  It cleared up after a week or two and now my skin on my face is just lovely!
    • NEVER EVER trust a fart.  Not in the early days.
    • Constipation is real, coloxyl is the solution for me.
    • You don't poop anywhere near the volume you consume, I guess most of it is liquid and mushy anyway so no solids formed.   TMI I know, does anyone else miss a decent poop?  🙂

One month and I can say I feel 100% IF I STAY WITHIN MY LIMITS.  Last night we had Chinese takeaways/takeout for the first time, I had a small wonton soup (I know our local Chinese cook, they are very very healthy with their cooking methods).  I sipped away at the liquid and had a wonton.  It was so delicious that I had a second one...bad move.  Felt bloated, a little uncomfortable and had to stand up for a while.  If I had just had the one, all good.

I hope this sort of information helps others.  The nearly 13kgs I have lost has had an enormous impact on my life.  I don't huff and puff putting on my undies, clothes I haven't worn for years now fit me - just.  I can cross my legs comfortably, my back pain has gone completely...and I mean 100% goneski!!  I can cross my arms and they sit under my boobs, not on top of my bloated liver and stomach.  I bought my first bikini online.  It arrived, looks great (to me and hubby) and I feel comfortable in it at home.  I have another 17kgs to go, but I'm ok with taking it slowly.

    🙂

Us shovelers....I love it 🙂 You've made my Friday!

I'm so happy I haven't been a chucker. I hate the thought of vomiting and it was a bit of a concern of mine regarding the surgery.

I am a three meal a day girl, don't really like snacking. Been told I have to because I'm not eating anywhere near enough....it's either a feast or a famine right...ha get it! That's PUNNY.....

I think I have had one too many coffees....

    Flatulence at a year post-op

And you. I was fine before surgery.....have you been to a naturopath? Just a thought.....what is a standard days food plan for you? I was warned not to drink with a straw and to eat with a very small fork or teaspoon.

    Flatulence at a year post-op

Oh god, I am worried now. I am four weeks post surgery and have the longest loudest flatulence (that has no odour) and wondered when it might end. I'm interested to see the responses to your post.
  25. Four weeks since surgery.  12kgs down (26lbs).   I feel like I'm still not eating enough, but have had some great advice from the dietician last week that I'm implementing from today.  It's Monday morning in sunny and HOT Queensland, Australia, so today will be increasing my water, and including two snacks a day - it should also help me have a break from my desk.  Still working from home, still loving it!

Happy Monday to you all x

I had my sleeve done August 2020. For the first few weeks, I barely ate much. I really didn't feel like eating. As my sleeve healed, I tried very small meals. I was more concerned about getting my fluids in. I was told often that I will end up in the hospital from dehydration. From the beginning, I kept a daily water/food log of calories, protein, carbs. I also record my weight once a week. It holds me accountable. The weight loss is slow, but my log shows me how far I have progressed. Good luck on your weight loss journey.👏

Thank you for your comments, I'm glad I am not alone in this. Sounds very cliche, but I mean it. I have slowed down this week, probably because it's THAT time. But I'm definitely getting more nutrition in and I'm testing new textures. The only disappointment is that salmon, steamed, makes me feel very heavy in the belly even after a few nibbles. Oh well, small price to pay hey.

Have you noticed the way you stand, the way you feel, the way people react to you has changed?
