May Surgeries - check in!
My surgery was 5/5; I am one week out so far; there is more pain than expected, but at least I am not hungry. It is pretty easy to follow the prescribed diet so far.

Lying about not getting surgery is awful
The disease of obesity is potentially fatal; the decision to pursue WLS is a private one. I decided to share my weight-loss and surgical experience with my closest friends. By far I have found them supportive. However, one person told me the post-op diet was unhealthy and would ruin my metabolism. I had to just let him know that this is prescribed as part of my doctor’s program, and I am going to follow it. So there is definitely a downside to sharing the choice for surgery. I do not feel that keeping things fairly private is hurting others because each person is responsible for their own health, and theirs only. WLS is so well-known now that virtually every heavy person os aware of that option.

Post-op only allowed 500 calories a day???? Why
How has the surgery reset our metabolism?

I hate food....
Oh my gosh, Suzie Q; it sounds like you are ill. Did they give you something to take to prevent vomiting?? They gave me scopolamine patch & a drug called Lansoprazole, I think they are both for nausea, but not sure about the second one. Maybe you could reach out to your bari doc again to see if u could get these scripts or Zofran or something. Big hugs to you & I hope this passes soon! Will be sending good vibes!

Post-op only allowed 500 calories a day???? Why
The pre-op diet allowed 4 protein shakes a day..... but now I am only allowed 3 maximum??? 140 x 3 = 440 calories... Why is it necessary to go that low? Won’t that damage my metabolism?? I asked the nurse about it; all she said was, “they want you to lose weight.”. Seems like 800 calories would still cause weight loss. Can anyone explain this to me?

Nothing lost
The same thing has happened to me. Went to surgery at 260. Came home two days later at 268. I am now 5 days post-op and at 261, even though I am getting fewer than 600 calories a day. I agree it does a number on your head!!!

Depression after surgery?
I am 5 days post-op; my diet now is 2-3 protein shakes per day, only about 450 calories. My large incision hurts. I am feeling depressed—I think it’s because I read the surgeon’s report. She stated the operation was unusually difficult due to the size of my liver, and it added an hour and a half to the operation. I spent two weeks on the pre-op diet, followed it faithfully with the exception of a little yogurt with sugar on day #6. Why didn’t the diet shrink my liver more, and how can I reverse the “severe hepatomegaly” she included in her report? Was I fat so long that my liver is now ruined? This is depressing!

Pain on right side?
I am day #3 post-surgery. Yesterday the incision to the right of my navel was pretty terrible. It felt like I was tearing inside. I think I did too much walking the day after surgery. Today it is better, but it still stings & burns a lot. I feel that it will probably get a little better each day.

Pain on right side?
I waa stapled day before yesterday. The pain in my right flank is very severe; hoping it will get better soon.

28 hour countdown; shrinking anxiety;
I am nearly prepared for surgery. Just have to get a few last minute supplies & it’s “t-time!”. Then one-two nights in hospital, depending on how I do. Now that I have lost 15 pounds the first 13 days on the pre-op diet, I KNOW I can follow the post-op diet, AND I know I can change my eating habits for life. I’ve done a LOT of difficult things in my life; this is just another one! The pre-op diet has given me renewed confidence, so my anxiety over failure is waning. OTHERS DiD THiS, I CAN DO THIS & SO CAN YOU!!! Thank you to the many BP members who have helped SO much to make my WL journey easier!!

Not a huge issue but...
That’s a great way to approach it... I am older & retired, so I tend to buy cheap plain clothes. But I suspect when I get this weight off (fingers-crossed) my self-esteem will improve, and I will get out more. So if I am successful, there are possibly prettier clothes in my future! ?

scared
Oh I just saw this! I am so sorry that happened to you — falling down — and the other struggles. Sounds like you’ve got some challenges there. I hope losing weight will help you deal better with your health. Message me any time; I’m just now learning to use this app a little better. So sorry I didn’t respond before. ❤️

Not a huge issue but...
I went ahead and ordered one size and two sizes smaller of two t-shirts each and one pair of shorts about two sizes smaller. I had not ordered last year because I couldn’t go anywhere anyway. Figured new clothes + a little incentive would be s great pick me up.

pre-op
Yes. I am ashamed. I ate a cup of nonfat yogurt with 1/8 cup of brown sugar and cocoa. Boy was it good but it wasn’t worth it. I felt much better physically the rest of the day after that, but I got on the scale tonight and I weigh 5 pounds more than I did this morning. So now I have lost a net 7 pounds instead of 12 in 6 days. I’m not going to kick myself over it. For now I guess I’ve got to continue the keto journey even if i do not feel well most of the time. Because I’ve passed out once and almost again yesterday, I am going to call the general doctor tomorrow to schedule an appointment before surgery. Because I don’t think things are right with my body. The bariatric clinic says it is not the diet but I am not convinced of that. It may be that some people just cannot do well on a plan that has only 10 grams of carbs per day and 700 calories. I mean, I am 65 years old.

Weird question about fat pain pre-op
Elvira, I have definitely had fat pain in my abdominal area. It seems to happen after I have done a lot of exercise, and it occurs below my navel.

Am I dreaming?
Wonderful that you feel as good as you do. Congratulations! Keep us posted!

What was/is your greatest fear?
my fears are complications and failure. but I now have mild heart failure so if I want to live I must be successful.
-
What was/is your greatest fear?
jaelzion, those were also my fears. Fear that I could end up with a permanent colostomy from complications, or failure. I had two family members who talked me out of surgery twice. But I decided they probably didn’t understand much about it. As I got older I began to have heart problems. So this time it’s a GO! I want to live!

One glass of wine....
I think it’s okay as long as it doesn’t lead to a binge, or throw you off your good, new habits.

I smell funny?
I am noticing I smell like onions, but I haven’t eating any. I got some Rose petal spray from iHerb, just $10. They also have it at Ulta. helps a lot!!!

I smell funny?
Weird. I keep smelling like onions; very unusual! Maybe toxins being released?
