    Anyone for October 2020?

I haven't taken anything else for the gas yet other than the colic med the hospital gave me. I've been walking a lot but still have gas so tomorrow I think I'll get some OTC stuff for it. The chewables sound good.

    Anyone for October 2020?

My pre-op diet was 3 meals and 2 snacks totalling 800-1000 calories and included what I thought was a lot of carbs. I cut the carbs right down because I was struggling to keep to the calorie limit when I included them. It almost seemed as if the dietitian hadn't road-tested the diet. I had to do it for nearly 3 weeks because I have fatty liver. But I did lose 16lbs on it so that was good!

    Anyone for October 2020?

It's surprising how different the pre-op and post-op diets are from one doctor to another. My obligatory counselling session was very expensive - they've recommended I have more but I don't have to thankfully. I didn't find it very helpful.

    Anyone for October 2020?

I'm on day 2 and just home from the hospital. My stomach's painful and lots of gas - they've sent me home with a baby colic medicine which has given my family a laugh! I'm just trying to walk to get rid of this horrible gas. It's so good to hear of everyone's progress and tips x

    I'm Hungry are You?

The hungry feeling only goes away after 3 days if you're on a "keto" style diet. My pre-op diet was proper food all specified by the dietitian and included carbs. So the hunger didn't go away and I have been starving hungry for over 2 weeks. I have managed to control myself by knowing that if I haven't shrunk my liver enough by the op date they will start but not be able to do the procedure. I've been drinking lots of calorie free fluids to try to fill up but it only helps a bit.

  7. Hi 🙋‍♀️ I'm also in the UK and my RNY bypass surgery is this Thursday (22nd)! My liver shrinkage diet is between 800-1000 calories and I've been on it for just over 2 weeks already. I'm having the op privately - very difficult to get it on the NHS in my area - but my dietitian provides the same pre-op diet for NHS and private patients. It's not protein shakes; she gives a full diet plan which includes specific amounts of protein, fruit, veg and carbs. She said quite specifically not to go below 800 calories at this stage. I found it hard to stick to the 800-1000 cal limit when including all the carbs she put in so dropped some of them, and have also decided from today to go onto liquid (protein shakes) for the last 3 days. I think all plans are different but tailored to the patient? My pre-op diet is usually for 2 weeks but I was put onto it 4 days early as apparently I have a "fatty liver", so there may be a specific reason why your nurse told you 600 calories a day. You could ring/email them? Good luck!

    Anyone for October 2020?

Hope you're feeling better very soon 🤗
  9. Yes I'm also concerned about covid cases possibly meaning my surgery is cancelled - my Consultant's PA has told me that the hospital is reviewing things on a daily basis 😟 Good luck with your surgery!
  10. Not many people here from the UK! I'm having RNY bypass next Thursday at St Mary's in Paddington. We used to live in west London and I know the hospital well tho we moved a couple of years ago; where we live now is quite rural and not near hospitals, so travelling back to London for the surgery. I have to admit I'm getting nervous now. When's your surgery due?
  11. The Phd diet whey powder looks good - I will probably order some to try it. Thanks!

    Hello

Hi! I'm in the UK too and due to have RNY gastric bypass on 22nd October (as long as the hospital is still doing non-urgent ops then and not pushed over to Covid cases 🤞). Hope your surgery goes well!
  13. My surgery's next Thursday 🤞and the alert level where the hospital is has just been raised. I spoke to my Consultant's PA this morning and she said that so far all is fine in the hospital, but they're getting daily updates from management and if they start having Covid cases they'll cancel non-urgent operations. So I'd assume most hospitals will be working on this basis. I have to go on Monday for a Covid test and then for the op go in on my own and no visitors while I'm there plus of course wearing a mask etc.
  14. I'm having surgery just before you dal101 and also trying to sort the shakes for afterwards. My Dietitian recommends the Slimfast Protein (along with various other protein shakes) and I have to say I was quite surprised when I bought it to see how much sugar/carbs are in it. I've got a variety of other shakes as well to try post-op so I suppose I'll just have to see what works!

    Getting really close

I have a gastric bypass RNY the following Thursday (22nd) and I've been on the pre-op diet for a week. I'm starving hungry too and also feeling anxious about the surgery. Covid means I have to go to the hospital on my own too and no visitors for the 2 nights I'm there - I agree having to be on my own is very daunting. I'm just trying to hold it together by reminding myself why I'm doing this - steady weight gain, yo yo dieting for years, high bp, arthritis, pre-diabetes. If I postpone it now, all routine ops here might be cancelled till who knows when if covid accelerates more, so I think as my decision is made, it's best to just do it now. Good luck!
  16. Surgery on 22nd: I've read as much as I can online, bought various types of protein shakes, protein waters, hot chocolates for liquid diet. I've done a blank chart to use as a daily record of fluids/calories/protein/carbs (I don't get on with myfitnesspal app). I've got together small pots for using in the puree stage and have bought the vitamins in bulk. For the hospital stay, I've bought various toiletries plus dry mouth spray & lip balm (I still have more to sort for this). I've been following the pre-op diet to the letter, given up sugar and have been concentrating as much as possible on protein. Also have been taking multivitamins.
  17. Which protein source do you find to be best after surgery? Thanks!
  18. I've copied mine below. I've been told to stick to 800 calories per day and couldn't do this if including a carb at both lunch and dinner, so dropped the carb in the evening meal. I asked the dietitian why the diet isn't shakes - she said that they find that people get very fed up with the shakes if they have them both pre and post-op and also that this is designed to get you into the habit of 3 small meals and 2 snacks. Hope this helps. "The diet is designed to give you approx 100g of carbohydrate per day. Try to opt for complex carbohydrates as these will help to fill you up more than refined or white bread, rice and pasta etc. The diet is low in fat and moderate in protein and low in calories, providing approx 800-1000 kcal. 19. I'm currently on day 4 of the pre-op diet and starving hungry. Not just head hungry! I've never done an 800 calorie diet - I used to be able to lose on 1400 calories - so am finding it very challenging. The thing that's getting me through is the thought that I only have another 15 days of it. Also my surgeon told me about a patient he had who didn't shrink his liver enough - they had to close the surgery without doing the op. I definitely don't want to be in that position.

    Anyone for October 2020?

I'm booked in for 22nd October in London UK! I'll be starting the pre-op diet on Sunday - slightly earlier than the 2 weeks by Consultant's advice. I'm very nervous about the operation, but definitely glad to have found the site. There's very limited information available from my dietitian - and a lot of gaps which I'll have to query with her - so am delighted to have so much experience to access on this site!
  21. I've been thinking for some time about having wls and finally took the plunge to see a Consultant. I've since had dietitian/psych consultations and have been "passed" for a gastric bypass though I don't have a date yet for the op. I have just over 4 stone to lose which has crept up on me over the last decade due to stressful situations/comfort eating. Having spoken to the dietitian and looking through the various topics and posts on bariatricpal I can see that in order to successfully maintain the weight loss which is achieved after the bypass, it's necessary to limit eating forever, say by calorie counting, and if this isn't done then it's likely that I would regain weight, despite the smaller stomach. I had (obviously stupidly) assumed that with a smaller stomach it would simply not be physically possible to eat as much and that this would keep the weight off. In the past I've been a bit of a yo-yo dieter and have lost weight successfully at Slimming World; the problem for me is that I find it hard not to go back to old eating habits and gradually the weight goes back on. So my question is: why is having the weight loss surgery more effective than losing the weight by dieting in terms of keeping the weight off long term? Am I just as likely to put the weight back on after wls as I would if I lost weight following a diet? I have to self-fund the wls and thinking about that, as well as the fact that it's major surgery plus the various potential issues such as hair loss etc is freaking me out a bit. Any thoughts? Thanks!
  22. Thank you for the recommendations - I'll definitely watch those.
  23. Just also like to mention how helpful I'm finding the forum on this site. It's be a bit daunting to see the topics where people are having problems after surgery, but it's much better to go into it knowing what to expect and with so many helpful comments as to how to overcome/deal with the problems. 😄
