Good to know I'm not the only hypothyroid person on here. Was that the major reason for getting sleeved/ bypass surgery?

I have hypothyroid but I'm doing the sleeve. My inability to lose weight due to complexities of hypothyroid is why I'm getting the surgery on January 21st. Are you pre or post op?

I have the same question actually I heard calcium and Iron are both blockers. So I need to ask on my first appointment back in a couple weeks. I'll let you know what my physician says since my appointment is on the 15th.

I worry if the sleeve is for me due to my hypothyroid. If the rate of weight loss is still super slow I keep thinking maybe I shouldn't go through with it.

I am Hashimoto’s hypothyroid and I had the sleeve in August of 2018. I went from 346 to 172 lbs currently. I follow proper nutrition and exercise and have had great results. It was slow at times but it all came off. As far as the meds go, you can’t take Calcium or Iron within 4 hours of your thyroid meds so you have to start early. I take my NP Thyroid at 5AM and then start supplements at 9AM. Lots of timers set on my phone but I’ve not had any Vitamin deficiencies and my thyroid levels have been balanced other than dosing changes for weight changes. Hope this helps!

Hi @Castrad01 - I wait an hour typically because I used to have a morning coffee and unfortunately just sips will cause interference with synthroid effectiveness. I am no longer drinking coffee (to ward off the side effects before surgery), but I have also have heard that you have to wait at least an hour before eating as well.
With waiting the 4 hours after taking your thyroid meds - you have enough time to get all your vitamins/supplements in during the day?

Yes I was having the same issue with being able to lose weight, weight loss has been slow. I am half way through week 4 and current weight loss is 14lbs. The months leading up to surgery i worked hard to loss 30lbs. I wanted to create this group so I could share my experiences with ppl who have hypothyroidism and see if we are experiencing the same challenges with weight loss after surgery. How us your weight loss @Deb9386

I am in Australia so brands may differ. Pop into your pharmacy/drug store and tell them what you need and why. Your wounds (if having a VSG) will be uo to 1.5 inches long and you will have up to 6 wounds maximum. I had 5, three tiny, 2 just over an inch long.

Candles or scented oil....ooh yes. That was another one. My amazing husband got me a new Lush vaporiser for Christmas from my stepsons, and some lavendar oils. It really helped me stay calm and settled.

Heating pad, definitely! It’s the only thing that helped with my gas pains (other than walking). Make sure you’ve picked up all your meds ahead of time, too. Congratulations! And good luck!

KelBel3040 reacted to New Me, New Mind in Trauma, Anyone? I'd love as many opinions as possible please!
Disclaimer: this is a long-winded post and could possibly be triggering for some ppl.
As i watched tons..and i means TONS..of youtube videos during my "research" period pre op I heard lots of ppl mention the emotional and mental part of this journey post op. I gathered from those videos that i would probably be dealing with past trauma that needs healing as I lose the weight..uhhh i had no clue though to expect THIS! Does anyone else feel like as the pounds fall off, emotional scars are uncovered and smack u in the face randomly? I'm all about healing and psychology so I'm down for the ride but whew! I had a panic attack today and have cried all damn day, not knowing exactly which trauma i am supposed to be addressing in my mind. I had a nightmare/flashback two nights ago and woke up sweating and crying with a full blown panic attack. Thats not abnormal for me but i typically can identify the trigger and what specific trauma was triggered. I couldnt do that today, and the traumatic event that was relived in my nightmare the other night was what caught me by surprise bc that event always seemed like "just another effed up, unfortunate event" that occured to me as a child..not something i necessarily considered big traumas like my father's death, being homeless and on my own as a child, sexual abuse, etc. I'm 75lbs down, abt 6 months post op now. Everything has been super positive and ive been elated since surgery. All of a sudden tho its like as i lose this weight im on a healing journey of integrating the "little broken me" with the "grown healthy me"..if that makes sense..im a very positive, encouraging person (friends always get onto me for having "rose colored glasses"), but lately i am just floored as im slapped in the face with extreme emotions or memories from the past. This could be unrelated to wls...maybe just typical ptsd...i know we like to connect wls to everything we're experiencing now lol but it makes me wonder..are others experiencing extreme triggers now? As bad as it sounds, its still a very good thing..or is that my "theres always a silver lining" defense mechanism speaking for me? Lol..but seriously i can't even put it into words how extreme the trigger is but also the healing i feel im receiving! I ended up in the bathroom speaking all the things to myself in the mirror that i would speak to a child having gone through the pain i experienced as a child...I was giving myself permission to be happy and feel safe and to embrace all my blessings bc i am worthy and do deserve it.i was telling myself that i am a good girl and that im proud of myself (as i look into my 32 year old eyes lol)..encouraging me to trust myself to protect myself and reasuring myself that ill always be here to show myself the love i deserve etc..it was so beautiful and pure..not conjured up at all.. and i wasn't even "thinking" during all this really...it was just flowing from my heart and was really cool!! For the first time ever, i saw how beautiful and precious and strong i am and meant every word of affirmation i was speaking! It was truly amazing! Again, sorry im so long-winded, but i really wanna know, "is this what ppl were talking abt? Are others experiencing this or is this just a me thing?"

Awesome responses -thank you guys! I just received a new Fitbit for Christmas so that would be a great way to start after surgery and keep track of those steps! I figured I'd be sleeping a lot I just want to make myself as comfortable as possible which I normally don't worry about. But now I really do and I don't want to short-change myself during this process. There is a lot of hard work ahead.

My surgery is on Jan 21 and I just wanted to ask everyone what did they do for self-care post-surgery? I have never been too great at it due to my crazy work schedule and always on the go. However, while on this journey I really wanted to pay special care of myself- so I was looking for ideas or suggestions for the hospital visit and home care that will make healing a bit more bearable.
I was thinking maybe buying some scented candles for the home, lining up some good-spirited films, and purchasing a back massager or something ( is that safe)

A couple of new firm pillows may help you get comfortable because sleeping positions might be awkward for a while. Candles are a bonus especially for the bathroom breaks. You may be cold often so anything that will keep you warm is totally an act of self care.
    Good Luck ❤️

Nice. I figured the candles would be a calming touch and now I believe for the bathroom as well! A few ppl mentioned the poots and poops. I guess the body must adjust, right! thanks for the suggestions
