One other piece of advice I have is that you are focusing on the all or nothing approach that isn’t going to serve you well long term. Let’s pretend you only lose 90% of your excess weight. Isn’t that a heck of a lot better than where you are at now?

I started off at over 48 BMI and 339 lbs. I had 174 lbs to lose to get to goal. I knew this was a huge amount so one thing I did to help myself was I committed early to losing weight. I lost over 50 lbs before surgery by sticking to low carb, and I just hit 90 lbs overall right after my two month surgery-versary. I’m over halfway there, with 84 lbs remaining. If you’re worried about the honeymoon, you have control over that. Start today, because every pound you lose now is weight you don’t have to lose later. And stop worrying about averages or anecdotes. You aren’t an average, you’re one person being given a tool that you can do amazing things with, or you can waste entirely. The success is about the person.

Reading through this whole thread...Honestly NY, you seem to have convinced yourself the sleeve won’t work. With that initial mindset, it probably won’t. Sorry, it sounds brutal, but attitude is half the battle. This is only a tool (whichever surgery). The real work is in the lifestyle change. That much is up to you. Your success or failure is YOUR choice. NOT the surgery.

K, I'm going to echo what was said by several posters: its not the surgery that dictates success, it's the individual.
I was sleeved over 2 years ago. I chose sleeve because:
The idea of re-routing my intestines freaked me out (but for some reason removing most of my stomach didn't. LOL) I wanted to keep my pyloric valve intact, as I was taking NSAIDS and another time-release med (but surprise, surprise I ended up not needing them anymore after surgery) I was scared of dumping syndrome (again, suprise, surprise, I dump anyway) I was NOT prone to GERD My surgeon was completely comfortable doing either surgery on me. I started off at a BMI of 43 (235 lbs). I got to goal of BMI 23 by 7 months post-op. Lost a few more pounds figuring out what my caloric level should be but finally settled into BMI 21, and have been maintaining my weight of 115 (+/- 5 lbs) for over a year and a half. I am 2 years, 3 months post op. I have stayed below my goal weight (more than 100% excess weight lost) the entire time.
I have read accounts from other sleever's and rNy'ers similar to mine. I have also read accounts from both sleever's and rNy'ers who reached goal and regained, or never reached goal at all....I also don't see an obvious co-relation of results to the type of surgery underwent. (On another note, I have to date only read of ONE person who was more than 2 years out who was under BMI 18 AND had difficulties keeping weight on...but I digress).
Barring any medical issues, so long as you maintain a caloric deficit, you should expect to lose the same amount of weight with either surgery.
    Good Luck!

The bypass and sleeve are very similar. I’ve seen you comment about people who’ve gotten back their weight, but my girlfriend and her mom did the sleeve 5 years ago and they have kept all their weight off. I have friends who’ve done the sleeve 2-3 years backs and they are still in great shape(no weight gain after 2-3 years). People who gain weight years after are people who start eating unhealthy and don’t follow the plan their Bariatric team has given them. My friend was 298 and in 9 months lost 150 pounds. She exercised and followed her diet. Simple. What is this myth you talk about? 18 month window? You’re always going to keep losing until you start eating to maintain your ideal weight. There is no window that magically stops you from losing. Who is giving you this information?

Milestone today! 30 lbs lost after surgery, 87.8 down since I started my weight loss in July, and I am now officially more than halfway to my goal weight! I just have to do this all one more time, haha. 😅

Also two people I work with actually commented this week that I looked like I’d lost weight. I never bring up dieting or weight loss so I was wondering how long it would take for someone to actually comment. The answer is darn near 90 lb loss!

Just over a year after my surgery I have reached my goal! I am officially half of my starting weight. I do think I'm going to try to lose another 15 lbs, but woohoo!
The not so good news, I've been sick for the last 10 days and that's the only reason I am down as much as I am in this two week period (9 lbs), and I fully expect a small bounce back once I feel better, but for now, I want to enjoy this moment as much as I can.

those percentages are averages. And as with all averages, there are people who fall on either side of that range. You'll find people on here who've lost 90% or 100% (with either surgery) and you'll find people who've lost 20% or 30% (with either surgery). It all comes down to how closely you stick to your program. If you stick to it and don't let bad habits creep back in, you'll do fine and will likely lose more than average.

as for missing hunger control when revised to bypass - I definitely had hunger control with my bypass. I don't think you can compare a revision to a "virgin" surgery.

I'm struggling with this statement because it would be really unusual to follow the program's diet and gain back 70 lbs. On the other hand, it seems like it's really easy to gain 70 lbs by slowly letting your food habits creep back to your pre-surgery ways, and it can happen slowly enough that it still feels like you're following the rules!
Regardless, it sounds a little bit like you already know you want the bypass and just want everyone to confirm your decision, which is totally relatable but just thought I'd point it out. The choice is really individual since we all have different bodies.

I’m a 39 year old working in healthcare management with two young sons and a husband of 13 years. I spend a lot of my free time reading, working on home projects, and quilting. I would say traveling but that kinda went out the window this past year. I’m rarely serious, pretty laid back, and happy to meet you all!

Two months in, 28.6 lbs lost after surgery, 86.4 total loss. I’ve tried a lot of stuff that people report issues with, like chicken breast, food with spice, etc. No issues with anything. I absolutely know when I’m close to restriction though!

I bought smaller pants online, and they turned out to still be too big. I’m definitely having some issues figuring out sizing! Trying not to invest too much in clothes though, because I want to still keep going. I’m halfway to my goal weight!

One month in, 16.4 lbs lost after surgery, 74.2 lbs total loss. Feeling great, just started on soft foods. Basically just eggs and cottage cheese at this point. Hit a huge milestone- I now have less than 100 lbs left to lose! I’ve got a long road but I’m heading in the right direction.

Who knew not eating would make you lose weight. I’ve been averaging around 900 calories a day on my liquid diet. I’ve lost almost 7 pounds since Sunday. No joke this is hard. The kids are eating pop tarts as I type.

Like others have said, you're probably safer going into the hospital than almost anywhere you may go. Everything is sterile and the likelihood of catching something is super rare. Now, if you go to Walmart or the grocery store...

Yep. The stalls suck. The weight fell off for a few weeks. Now, at 6 weeks out, its slow. In fact, its become the slowest I've ever lost weight. Not sure if I'm in a stall or have become a slow loser. Either way, I'll stay the course.

Surgery November 10, 25.6 down post surgery, overall 83.4. Been slowly trying new foods, no problems with any of them. Not trying anything really high carb though. chicken breast works great, which was a relief because some people said they had issues with that. Got a Thai curry the other night and just ate some of the tofu and carrots out of it. Tasted great.

Overall I’m super happy with the whole process. It is exciting to constantly see lower weights on the scale.

blackcatsandbaddecisions reacted to mi75 in Weight regain...I don't know where to start.
I have a very similar story, am 6 yrs post VSG. Had regain about 2 yrs out and it took getting some ugly medical news to get me back on track for good. I went strict Keto, lost all the regain, lost about 20 more and am doing good. But it's always going to be a fight for me.
I had to commit-LITERALLY, FINALLY- to giving up a lot of foods that I'll likely never eat again and that was a huge mourning process. I've been about 3 yrs strict Keto and love the lifestyle, but it's not for everyone. And it can be a challenge. yes we can have all that fat, but it's still really hard knowing I'll likely never eat most 'regular' foods again.
Pre-surgery I had hoped I would be able to eat all things in small amounts again someday- but that got me on a slippery slope leading to the regain. So I have to stick to what works. I've found that when it comes to staying on track, I do great with total abstinence but really BAD at moderation.

I grew up the youngest in a large family so I was trained to eat fast from birth! I still eat faster than I should, but I’m meticulous about keeping only the amount of food on my plate I should be eating. I feel like training myself to eat slower is more of a struggle than eating smaller amounts. Sigh.

PACU is the post anesthesia care unit. It just means you’ll be cared for there (in the same area you get set up for surgery generally) instead of a separate room. You’ll probably get a lot more attention to be honest. I wouldn’t worry in the slightest.
