Hello everyone! New here. I’m hoping to get some helpful advice.

I personally have been struggling with my weight a lot of my adult life, but most seriously in the last 9-10 years since the birth of my youngest. Current weight is about 230 and height is 5’5. (Although I realize my primary doctor has me in the computer as 5’6). That puts my current BMI at 37-38.

I am seriously considering the gastric sleeve. I narrowed my initial research down to 2 surgeons. I live in the NYC area but am looking to have the surgery near Nassau county, Long Island. My insurance is Emblem Health/HIP for employees of the City of NY.

The obstacle I foresee is that I don’t know if I have qualifying co-morbidities, as far as the insurance is concerned. I had a physical in June, and per my bloodwork, I have high triglycerides, slightly high cholesterol, and am pre-diabetic.

I called the first surgeons office and the receptionist asked for my height and weight. Then she asked for any co-morbidities, and I mentioned the pre-diabetes. She shut me down right away and said that’s not enough, I would have to be diabetic and on medication. I mentioned to her that I am having an at home sleep study next week, she said to call back after I get those results. She didn’t even ask me what my insurance was, so I suppose this just the surgeons requirements.

Anyone have any idea about whether the high cholesterol/triglycerides would count as a co-morbidity for insurance approval? Or is the possible sleep apnea the only other thing that might qualify me at this point?

I was going to call the other surgeon I was considering, but this discouraged me a bit. If I am to do the surgery, I would love to do it sometime in the near future. I will be working from home for awhile due to COVID, so being able to do the next 6 months or so would be ideal. I also had an EKG done this summer, which came out OK, and I have recorded weights from doctors’ offices for June, July, and August. I think my insurance requires 6 months worth of documented weights.

Thanks in advance for any insight/advice.

I had this issue! I was 227 & I'm 5'5. I had two doctors completely shut me down when I called to inquire. The first doctor I started w/ actually wrote other things in as comorbidities like my depression & anxiety (all my tests were normal). They were almost certain I would get approved. When COVID hit, I gained like 15lbs so I ended up hitting that 40BMI mark. But yes I think depending on your insurance they may consider other things minor comorbidities. I dropped weight before surgery and went in at 227, all was good! Hope everything goes well for you, don't let anything discourage you!

  2. Hi! Who is Chicago is doing your surgery? That's where I had mine done :). The sameeee thing happened to me, originally I was scheduled 7/20..well on July 9th they called and asked if I wanted to take a 7/13 opening they had...took it! lol. But yes, I felt as if I had no time to prepare either. Did they give a specific reason on why you can't season things? For me, I seasoned broth because I couldn't stomach it. I'm now 28 days out and feeling good. I'm officially down 20, which makes me even happier! Things do get easier, but there will be moments that you say "wtf did i do" lol, for me that was primarily right after surgery (I hated those gas pains). All will be well though!!

What I find sad is that despite her taking great lengths to feel better about herself, her insecurity is still overshadowing her.

I commend you for identifying a toxic energy and removing yourself from it. Life is too short.

    soooo true!!!

I have been doing everything slowly. I’ve been eating baby food and can only have about an ounce two at the most. I’m just miserable. Plus I haven’t lost any weight in a week. I knew it would slow down but not after 2 weeks of surgery

I hate that you're having troubles! But my doctor said I would only be eating 1/4-3/4 cup during week 2...1/4 is 2oz so you're close. If you don't mind me asking, how long does it take you to eat? and Are you waiting the 30 minutes before/after eating before drinking? We're all here for you!!!

So I had to go back into the hospital for iv and a Vitamin bag. I don’t feel as drained but I still can’t eat (we’ll drink) more then 2 ounces. It wants to come right back up.

    Hey!

are you drinking slowly? I had my surgery 7/15, I'm currently on soft foods and things are going well. But whenever I eat or drink too quickly i instantly feel like I'm going to throw up and i get super hot. I hope things get better!

  6. Heyyy!

I'm about 23 days out from surgery. I had VSG too...one thing I wanted to say was to be sure you're not feeling gas. For me, hunger pangs AND gas pains were the same feeling lol...weird right? But for me mashed potatoes helped a lot, that ricotta bake recipe is pretty good too & made me feel like i was actually eating! Things will be better soon! I had a really hard time my first week or so due to my emotions being CRAZY and me not being able to wrap my head around that I physically cannot eat the foods I've always loved.

Bupropion has a half-life of up to 30 hours.. with that in mind you can probably go a day or two without a full dose until you are able to get them down again. I was able to do full pills 3 days post op... I couldn't do crushed pills at anytime, tasted bloody horrible. As noted above, should be fine with cutting them up into smaller pieces first.

Holy hell I swear it’s the worst tasting **** ever! I put it in yogurt and almost threw up ugh. Thanks though, I’ll definitely cut it!

  8. Has anyone been on Wellbutrin prior to surgery? If so, what did your surgeon have you do after surgery to get your meds? My doctor has switched my Wellbutrin XL with a 2 doses of a 75mg pill. Problem is, when I crush the pills & no matter how I take them I gag & feel like I want to throw up! Then when it goes down I begin to feel nauseous. This makes it sooo hard to make sure I’m getting my meds & I can feel it affecting me. My surgeons office says I have to crush it, but like I said it’s like I can’t stomach it.

I've been on Wellbutrin for a number of years. Didn't need to stop for surgery and still taking. Wellbutrin doesn't usually cause weight gain. I also take Klonopin which worries me that it might interfere with weight loss. But without it, my mood gets unstable.

Hey! I’m on the same (Wellbutrin), ask your doc if they can prescribe the non extended release for you to crush up! My doctor told me not to take that one (normal 150mg extended release pill) & got me 75mg of the regular to crush up & take twice a day. My surgery was Monday & I’ve been taking it since Wednesday.. Hope this helps some ❤️

I am 9 days away from surgery. Did anyone feel panicky? I’ve been pretty calm about the procedure up until now. Did this happen to everyone? Was anyone second guessing themselves? Help me 😩

I definitely did. On Tuesday last week I found out they moved my date up to this past Monday (7/13) so that day I began feeling nervous and questioning myself!

Good luck! Are they going to be able to get the test results back in one day? My test was supposed to be Monday (3 days before my surgery), but they called me yesterday afternoon and told me to get the test early because it’s taking longer to get results now. I hope I get my results quickly because I cannot stop worrying. Even if it’s bad news, I’d like to know as soon as possible.

Hey! I had my test done Friday & my results came in at 3am on Saturday! I was able to check them on “MyChart”. I was worrying too!

  13. My surgery is tomorrow guys! 😬😬😬 I won’t lie I’m nervous (especially knowing family won’t be there). The last few days have been filled with nerves and wondering if I’m doing what’s best for me. But! I know this is the best possible decision & I know that I’m going to be so much happier!
