LastChance57 got a reaction from Slimming Down Steve in Serious question here. Has anybody had a gastric bypass because of gastropareses.
Yes, I initially looked for that type of surgery. In my early 50’s, I became extremely morbidly obese as a result of prednisone & steroid epidural block injections and decided on GB instead. It has made a difference but I use Miralax every night to have movement. I really hope it helps your wife, too!

You are doing great! This is my 6th week and I have only lost 19 lbs. I started at pre op at 203. I was losing fine until I hit the purée stage. Keep up the great work!

Oh gosh I hear you. But unless they have known "fat" you, (& even sometimes then too) it's still going to come across as another skinny person giving them shame.

Because my head still hasn't caught up to my size, I'm constantly looking at people trying to assess (privately) "am I bigger than them?" "was I bigger than them before the surgery?" Etc. I was almost always the fattest person in a room and I'm still shocked at not being that way anymore. And I want to go up to them all and tell them there's hope. But I don't of course because that wouldn't help. I'd have HATED someone to do that to me.

I talk about WLS when someone is genuinely interested.
My first year out, I had to realize my enthusiasm about bariatrics is not at everyone’s level. Learning the basics was eye opening and life changing. IDK. I would be offended by someone approaching me about WLS when I never asked about it.
Grocery shopping - When I see a cart of unhealthy stuff. It’s a sad reminder that I used to shop and eat like that.

I think you are losing just fine. I had surgery on October 1 and weighed 285 that day. Today I'm 266.....for two weeks I stayed at 270...stall already......So..I've only lost 19 lbs. It's slow compared to others but still happy to be slowly losing. I do wonder why i did this to myself sometimes. I thought with RNY you were supposed to lose faster.

Not that I’m complaining, but I haven’t had a hot flush since I had my surgery back in May. I may have had a slight twinge a couple of weeks ago but this is Queensland and the heat is on (sorry to all you freezing in the northern hemisphere) so it could just have been the 37degrees C temp.

Have any of my menopausal sisters experienced this?

I know I’ve lost all the eostrogen that was stored in my fat but could it also be that I’ve passed that stage of life? Or is my HRT just working extremely well now?

Told my girlfriends of this change last weekend. Got called a few names as they were fanning themselves & turning the air conditioning to arctic temps. 😆

I understand your feelings completely and compared- at least to me- it’s normal. Around the second week, I put different spices in my broth to make it taste better and I pretended like it was something different. The grocery store bought Bone Broth was the worst. But a friend told me about the Bariatric Pal Store and I bought the broth - it has 15 grams of Protein. They also have drinks with 15 grams of protein that taste good and not too sweet. (Everything I bought prior to the surgery is what I can’t stand now, including the whey powder, shakes, and anything sweet.) It was the only thing I could do to get my protein in at that point. The Bariatric Pal store powder Protein Drinks and broth ( with my own seasonings added like poultry seasoning, salt & pepper it tarragon, etc) did help.

It’s hard and it’s a mind game but it’s only for now- not for always. The time will go quickly. Also, when you start eating purée food, you will feel much better because of the Vitamins & minerals that real food gives.

I have read & saw on other sites that about the second week post op, people can get emotional. Well, I just knew I wouldn’t - until Day 9 post op hit me & I lost it. I melted down because I tried to do too much that day to shake the feelings of buyers remorse. Then, my hubby went to Red Lobster and had the nerve to bring home leftovers. Needless to say, that was his last time at Red Lobster. I yelled at him, cried (and I’m not a cryer), and I made him throw it out with the trash. Then, I couldn’t sleep & woke him up at 3:00 am & yelled at him again. I had buyers remorse big time. I couldn’t see the forest because of the trees. I had my 1st support meeting that week - which really helped a lot. It wasn’t very long after that where I was able to eat purée food and it made a world of difference! Keep hanging on! It will get better!😇

Hi! I had other major surgeries in the past and I was more awake and mobile with this surgery. I had 2 other procedures along with the gastric bypass but this is what I remembered:

    1. The hospital will give you pain medication intravenously and it really did help. However, I was released with Tylenol with codeine and it didn’t help at all. If you need something stronger, talk to your doctor.

    2. The nurses will teach you how to roll and sit up in the hospital (and that is still tough for me). I read that you should bring a small pillow for the trip home and keep it with you at home. It helps to minimize tummy pain if you sneeze or cough. Walk as much as possible to relieve tummy gas from the surgery. Ask your doctor if you can take Gas-X to help with relief. I had pain I both shoulders and was told that it was gas. It lasted for about 3 days after the surgery.

    3. Prior to the surgery, buy your broth, Protein Shakes, whey powder, sugar free Jello, Protein Water, & 1 ounce plastic cups to pour your drinks into (when you drink the protein shakes, water, protein water, broth, etc). You will need to sip as much as your tiny stomach will allow - like it’s your job- from the time you wake up until the time you go to sleep at night. Drinking liquids became easier for me around day 10.

    4. Prior to the surgery, buy what you will need according to your doctor’s diet schedule in case you can’t go anywhere for 2 weeks. Make sure you try everything and like it before your surgery.

    5. I bought the pre-made protein shakes so I wouldn’t have to make the shakes when I got home. I also bought the 1 oz cups and some disposable popsicle zip sleeves from Amazon. I put some of my protein water in the popsicle sleeves and made popsicles out of them, which helped a lot.

    6. Walk around the house & keep hydrated as much as possible to avoid blood clots & dehydration.

    7. When it’s ok to shower, be sure to do it when you are not too tired because it takes a lot out of you and you will need to hydrate after you are done.

Some of the steri-strips on your stitches or staples may come off in the shower within 5 to 14 days of surgery. I was told not to worry but every doctor is different. Call your doctor if you have any concerns.

Take it easy on yourself and try not to be a hero. Your body needs time to heal. I know it’s a lot but this is what helped me!

Was sleeved in June2017, weight was 220lbs, didn’t manage to hit my GW due to severe reflux and the the passing of my father. Was converted to RNY bypass on the 30/04/1019, weight this morning was 168.5lbs so down 9lbs since my bypass, 30lbs to go. From UK size 22 to size 14. Still a work in progress 😀

This is my day 2 after surgery on Oct 21. I’m finding that it’s hard to swallow pills, but it was hard for me before anyway.
I’m in some pain, but not unbearable. I also have chosen not to take any narcotics—they don’t agree with me.
I’m on a high Protein full liquid diet for the next ten days and those days can’t go by fast enough. It turns out that I’m not a fan of artificial sweeteners, which seem to be in all the pre-made Protein Drinks I purchased.
I’m trying to keep in mind my goals for having the surgery. That this stage is temporary — and that the long term goals are worth it!

I'm preop and I drink a lot everyday worried about possibly feeling dehydrated?
