Can anyone tell me in layman's terms what a ds does? My Dr wanted me to do this surgery, but opted for a sleeve. Can you convert to a DS from sleeve. Thanks so much! Sorry, not trying to hijack your post 😋

I have real trouble with anything spicy now. Just tears me up. Also really struggle with meats. Potatoes are a definite no go (unless they're mashed). I feel like I don't really have a set of foods I can "go to" that I know won't hurt my stomach. Every day is a bit of an adventure honestly. Just hit 120 days post-op and have lost 100 pounds almost. I can do like a McChicken from McDonald's or a junior bacon cheeseburger from Wendy's when I'm out and in a pinch. Anyone have any advice on really safe to digest, easy to make home meals?

Duodenal Switch does not get the dumping syndrome.
I had a RNY in 2001, revision this last June to Duodenal Switch . I know what Dumping syndrome feels like and how it was easy to get used to. Only things I have found that the Duodenal Switch gets is the limitation of food intake and the pain that accompanies it when eating too much as well as the bowl movement issues.
    Hope this helps.

My BP after the surgery has been normal with the medication. The Docs are afraid to take me off of the meds for fear that it would go up again. They want to wait a few months to see if it drops some more.

With my weight loss stalled, I don't think I will be getting off the BP Meds any time soon this year.

I honestly can’t remember the last time I posted to this board, but I wanted to share my story. I was banded 9/7/11. It worked great for me for the first few years. I lost a total of 120 pounds. Then it stopped working so great. I couldn’t keep things down and so we took all the Fluid out with the assumption that we would try to slowly fill it back up. Unfortunately, my port flipped and was only attached by one prong. Even though I didn’t have any fluid in my band, it was a gamble if I could keep down meaningful Protein. I resorted to things that would go down easily and as a result, gained back 95 pounds. My instance at the time would not pay for any bariatric procedures and so removal was not an options. I have since changed jobs but I am so busy I just went on with life. Fast forward to about 8 weeks ago and things suddenly felt “different “. I had acid reflux for the first time ever, sometimes I couldn’t keep Water down and I just had this heavy feeling where my band was. I went to a surgeon who said it needed to come out and he scheduled me very quickly. I had it removed yesterday and the scariest part about the whole thing is that the tubing had become attached to my liver. He had to cut it off and cauterize it. He said it looks good considering, but it has me freaked out. I am in so much pain today but so happy it is gone. I ate some lunch meat with cheese and a touch of honey mustard today and did not have any issues for the first time in years.

Hi, I recently relocated to Southern California (Laguna Niguel area) from Dallas TX. Dr Ayoola was my surgeon in Texas. I have been looking for a support group in the Laguna Niguel area. Does anyone know of any Bariatric support groups in the area? I had the DS, but support group doesn’t need to be surgery specific.

I'm just going to need to experiment some more with different types of cheeses.
String cheese I have no problem with, but is it considered soft or hard. Harder Cheese (especially those from the snack packs with small deli meat or nuts and fruit) are perfectly fine for me. Pepper Jack cheese which I used to love to no end, I can't eat now. Anything Hot has intensified since the surgery and I can't tolerate it.
So weird how a surgery can change the likes and dislikes of food that should be able to be tolerated with the new surgery.

Good Luck!! Its going to change your life for the good!
As to what you can and can't, the surgeon should of given you a list of do's and don'ts. My day before it was strictly only liquids you could see through. coffee was part of that too. It's like a colonoscopy, but allow for the red Jello.
Let us know how things go!

The only thing I can not tolerate is iceberg lettuce....I am fine with baby spinach so I just use that in all my salads.

See this is what’s so weird about WLS.
    So far I haven’t come across a cheese that I can’t tolerate.
In fact, cheese is one of my greatest loves now PO because it’s so flexible and yummy and a great Protein bomb and it gives me such a feeling of satiety.

Soft cheeses are my faves bc they go down easier

Forums are useful to a certain extent but I think a lot of us just check out the what’s new posts and reply to those without having any idea which forum they are in. Heck I think I have even inadvertently replied to men’s room posts by doing this!

I have had the sleeve and the RNY. My sleeve failed - for one I had a leak, so was in hospital for 3 months... they tried to place several stents and think they probably stretched things out. Upper GI confirmed my stomach was stretched. So, I have the RNY now. It is a slow process - apparently weight loss is slower with a revision, but I am happy. I woke up from the sleeve hungry and that hunger did not go away. I woke from RNY and I was not hungry and I still find I have minimal hunger. I still have demons that drive me to want to eat that I am working on, but the restriction I have from RNY helps me a LOT. I hope this helps.

I would agree. I'd revise to a DS. You probably need that surgery. I don't think you will be happy with the RNY and think you will likely not get to your goal weight with it.
I can say this because I have RNY (virgin surgery) and have a larger capacity. So I do not feel a whole lot of restriction. And food goes through my stoma very easily. So I have to be extremely careful of what goes in my mouth, calorie, volume count and limit food in the face of hunger. And I got to my goal. But it took Iron balls to do it. And not everyone can put that kind of limit on themselves.
If you haven't already, you need to have your sleeve evaluated to see if they left too much of the fundus in tact, or if it can be revised to make the sleeve smaller in a re-surgery. If it's surgeon error, they should have to fix it.
If it's your error through overeating or eating around restriction, then a new surgery won't necessary fix your head and you will need to consider counseling along with a new anatomy if you want to avoid having this same discussion in the future.

BoredCW got a reaction from MIchelle Rosanna in Failed attempts of Medical weight loss? Independence Blue Cross
I don't have that that exact insurance, but part of the BC family.
For my surgery proof of past weight loss attempts included the following:
Nutritionist Notes Some sort of weight loss program/Calorie counting (I captured all my food intake with LoseIt for 6 months. I was able to make a PDF of the food diary I kept for that time.) I think they also accept weight watchers. Medical documentation of weight at that time and activities of attempts to lose weight. I requested medical records from the doctors offices that showed my weight and what I talked to the Doctor about me losing weight. Also you should ask your surgeon as to what they look for as they deal with the Ins all the time and should know what they require.
    Hope this helps.
    Good Luck!

BoredCW got a reaction from Time4Kindness in Revision after failed sleeve surgery
I had the RNY in 2001. Loss 200 lbs but was still over weight. Kept the weight off for nearly a decade then gained it back. Recently I had a revision to DS. I was told by many the DS is the best for the very large to lose the weight and keep it off. So far I’ve lost 50 lbs in two and a half months.
I hope this helps. I know I don’t have much info as to the revision outcome still but so far it’s been worth it.
