Ava R got a reaction from ProudGrammy in Gastric Sleeve after 50 (Senior Sleevers)
Hello Everyone. I'm a newbie but on my way to gastric sleeve surgery 8/29/19. I just turned 60 and gave this surgery to myself as a gift. I know it's one of many tools and I'll have to really put the work in. I'm thankful for this site and forums to touch base with others who know how I feel. Best wishes to all on this journey. I'm sure I will be asking many questions.

I finished the triathlon today! No speed records, mind you, but I finished it. The final home stretch was so emotional for me, as I considered where I was 8 months ago. This would not have even been remotely possible then with 110 extra pounds and joints that were giving up the ghost. I feel so grateful for the life that has been given back to me. By the time I got to the finish line, with all the cheering, cow bells, finishing medal around my neck, I was in tears. What an amazing milestone. I will never forget this day and what it represents - a new life with new horizons I cannot yet even imagine. I feel good - not totally drained like I expected. No NSAIDs, either. What an experience. I hope everyone of us has a milestone achievement that redefines us as empowered individuals.

After a lifetime of being able to eat when and how we want. Being able to fill any hungry cues both head and real hunger, you can bet your bottom dollars we will be hungry!!!!! Either hunger from habits, pleasures, pain, stomach etc, and it takes our minds and bodies a while to adjust to the new normal but it will adjust! So hang in there my friends, we will retain our body to work healthily for us. It is not an easy process AT ALL but we'll prevail.
By the time we start eating regularly again (of course in small quantities), those hunger cues will be practically non existent and hence the lack of hunger people talk about. Hang in there [emoji176][emoji176][emoji176][emoji176]

    PS:
Just spent the weekend assisting kids and Skinny sis in law in making Harry Potter's butter beer and Fudge!![emoji37][emoji37][emoji37][emoji37][emoji37] Not fun!!! Didn't even taste a sliver!![emoji17][emoji17][emoji31][emoji31] But I was EVER so proud of myself[emoji169]🧡

I was sleeved 8/15 and can start pureed foods 9/5, I'm counting the days to cottage cheese and pureed veggies, yes I am hungry. I was hungry in the hospital too, it hasn't gone away. I asked the fellow sleeves and most said it was head hunger, I'm hanging in there but understand how you all feel. The first 2 days home from the hospital I also questioned my decision but that has passed and I am at peace with my choice. Hang in there we will all get there, keep drinking, even if it's small sips. My first protien shake at home took me 5 hrs to finish, one week later I drank it so quickly I was afraid it was too quick. It will get better

I think everyone goes through a period of questioning your decision and grieving. Your family is sitting down for this amazing meal which you probably made and your sipping on a Protein Drink. You did so much work to get here and your sick and tired of feeling sick and tired. Next time your feeling hungry distract yourself with something physical like a walk or do the stairs a few times. Is it head hunger or real hunger?

I was sleeved on the 27th and feel the same way. My hunger started a few days post op. I am forcing down the Water and Protein Shakes as I am suppose to, but I am counting the days until I can at least start soft, puréed foods. It’s been an emotional week for me, and I have had periods of doubt and regret, but I am hopeful this will change as I get further out in my recovery. I keep reminding myself my WHY, which helps a little. Hang in there!

Yup, I was sleeved on Friday the 30th, and woke up feeling hungry. My nutritionist was surprised, but my reasoning is that I haven’t had any solid food for over 2 weeks. I’m not bothered by it as I trust the process. I am actually quite relieved that I can’t eat whatever I want to. For the first time I looked in the mirror today and felt a true sense of hope. Don’t know if this helps, just wanted to share my experience.

I had the bypass and I do feel hungry lots of times. Even after surgery I was hungry a lot!
I never had any growling or gurgling so I don't know about that but I know I was hungry. I know some people say they lost their appetite after surgery but I can't help but wonder if they really did or if they just always had a smaller appetite than others.
    Anyway, good luck!

I had surgery on 8/29 and I feel hungry. I can barley get down Water and Protein Shakes but I do believe I'm hungry and that bothers me. Maybe when I start eating some solid food it will go away. If anyone has words of encouragement, please send them our way. Today I was even questioning if I made the right decision. I believe I have and it's been such a short time since surgery. I will carry on....

Well my surgeon requested diet woth calorie intake 1200 - as long as I stayed in that range I can eat anything I want
But cause of easier calorie counting I'm in a full liquid diet with one meat - low or no carbs meal

you won't die. The mortality rate on RNY is 0.3%. It's even lower for the sleeve. So you have at least a 99.7% chance of coming through surgery just fine - and you will. This is one of the safest surgeries out there, safer than hip replacement surgery, which they do every day. To be honest, I think my plastic surgery might have been more dangerous than my RNY, given I was under anesthesia for six hours with that (and only about 90 minutes for RNY).
complications aren't that common and when they do exist, they're usually minor. I had a stricture, which happens to about 5% of RNY patients. It's an easy fix and I was told it's one of the most common complications of RNY. I would hardly call something that happens to 5% of patients "common", but that's what you're dealing with (i.e., a pretty small risk of complications)
I know it's hard not to be scared about it - I was as well, but try to keep in mind this is a very low-risk procedure.

Well. I personally would worry about someone who didn't have some fear, at least a little, sometime in this long process. You are totally normal!
I have had a lot of surgeries myself-one just yesterday even (gallbladder out) and I can honestly say the bypass was the most anxiety provoking one by far. It is a BIG choice to make, after all, and it is wrapped up in lots of old emotions around weight and failure that we all deal with.
So, know you ARE OK, but try to use that fear by turning that energy into something positive now instead.
    Ideas:
Write down all the things you want to do after you lose some of the weight. Collect bariatric friendly recipes. Check out some of the great posts here of before and after pictures for inspiration etc.
Stick to your plan, use that (totally normal!) fear to get better prepared and give yourself grace when you need to.
It really IS going to be ok.
    You can do this!!!💙

I know that we are starting to gain momentum in the August club. How is everyone doing? Have you gone back to work yet? How are you getting in your fluids and Protein?
I was sleeved on Wednesday 8/14. Yesterday was my first day home, and it was rough! I keep sip sip sipping but I know o am falling short on intake. I took a shower by myself just now, and I can get up and down off the sofa and our of my chair with only a moment of sharp pain.
I hope everyone else is doing well

And my pre- surgery unfounded worry? The anesthesiologist would put me to sleep, my surgeon would change His Mind and I would wake up unoperated upon and crying my eyes💦out! Did Not happen that way- as I reflect at nearly a Year Out, why was I THAT distrustful? Why did I have such a Poor Opinion of myself that I thought I wouldn't deserve Something So Wonderful to happen? Perhaps we all have Emotional Baggage and that was the last piece on the airport Carousel. Glad I didn't reclaim IT, may it ride in circles through Infinity!

Good Morning lovely folks! I finally hit 100 down since surgery. I am 9 and a half months post op. Down 120 total! Super excited.. For those of you just beginning this journey you can and will make it. I still have about 50 to go to my goal, but i am getting there little by little. I am hoping at the year mark to be less than 30 to goal! I will be ok with that.. because i know i will eventually hit my goal no matter the duration.
Keep the faith, be strong, and stay on path.. dont compare yourself to others because this is your journey and yours alone. You will learn things as you go, your body will adjust and keep on moving.. Here is to the next 50!
