I took 2 weeks but had surgery on 5/13 and honestly could go back this Monday 5/20!!! Just a little pain in my stomach in the incisions and when I sneeze.. I’m chillin til 5/28 and then go back. It’s more of an individual thing based on pain and the type of job u have.. Good Luck to everyone!!!

I told them--there were questions when I suddenly started drinking Protein Shakes and stopped eating ice cream after lunch. Also, I used FMLA for all of the appointments, etc. and applied for short term disability for surgery.
I could have just as easily taken my PTO and not said a word.
A lot of it depends on what your job offers you to cover time off, but it is one of those things you have to do what is comfortable for you. You are doing it for you, so don't let the negative voices weigh you down...

I’m just over a year out from bypass and generally have had smooth sailing. However, today I had a Cobb salad for lunch. Not 45 mins later I was running (hobbling) to the restroom, sweating, groaning, clenching my cheeks and praying I’d make it (I did, I’m such a big girl) A few hours after that, my blood sugar tanked and I was shaking, heart racing, dizzy, etc. The only thing I can think is maybe the dressing had loads of sugar/fat in it that I’m not used to. Regardless, it was a gentle (ahem) reminder that my insides still make the rules.
If you need me, I’ll be drinking about 60 more Oz of Water. What a day...

I had gastric sleeve in Dec. 2013 after having reached a weight of about 440-450 and everything went according to plan the first 18 months or so.
Since the spring of 2015 or so, I have been stuck in the 285-305 range (I'm 6'3" and 43 yo) and have been unable to get out of that no matter what I try, to the point where emotionally, I am basically back where I was at my highest weight. I can't stand to look at myself in the mirror, and I'm either a) obsessively counting carbs or calories or b) not caring what I eat and engaging in secret compulsive eating (though on a much, much smaller scale—instead of a dozen donuts, I'm going for one or two and not telling my wife or anyone else).
The latest emotional defeat is this: I've spent the last three weeks doing a keto/Atkins-type thing, which was the only thing that ever worked for me before my surgery. Meticulous tracking, urine sticks showing I'm in ketosis, moderate walking exercise, and—here's the catch—a pretty extreme calorie deficit. Most days less than 2k per day, never more than 2,500, and in one four day period, I basically did the surgery prep diet of only Protein Shakes and broth, at about 800-1200 calories.
After all that, I lost 2 pounds, which, when you're 292 pounds, is nothing.
I'm already planning to eat poorly and secretly tomorrow, and I have absolutely no idea what to do. I feel essentially the same way I did before my surgery, though less intense, in that it seems like there's really nothing I can do.
This is driving my wife crazy, and she's unable to understand or emotionally support me. I'm also trying very hard to not go back to some other addictive patterns.
I know the first thing some are going to say is exercise more. I haven't done that lately, and there are two things holding me back on that point. At various periods in the last 4 years, I have done serious, several weeks-long programs with personal trainers in tandem with calorie deficit, and have had literally no success, other than gaining a little muscle, which resulted in a net weight gain. Also, I have some pretty extreme chronic degenerative disc pain, and it's hard to motivate myself to work past that pain when past results from diet and exercise have yielded little to no tangible benefit after great effort.
One other thing that may be a factor: I had my gallbladder removed in 2017, and it had been basically shot since at least fall of 2015. I also had hiatal hernia repair the same time I had the gallbladder out.
To be honest, I'm not really expecting any useful feedback. This may just be what life is for me now. But I had to say it somehow to someone.

I could have written your post word for word before my surgery last August. My decision was to only tell my family and a couple of very close friends. I work with two of my friends that I told but made them promise not to tell anyone else at work. I'm very happy with my decision. I've lost 90 lbs now. People at work started noticing a couple months ago, asking what I've been doing. My response has been that I'm logging all my food, not eating the often times 3000 calories, focusing on Protein to keep me full, reducing carb intake, and exercising (that last part isn't entirely true and I really need to get going on that). I also said that I'm quickly approaching the age that my Dad was when he died of a heart attack which was related to his obesity (all true). When I had the surgery last summer I didn't tell anyone at work what type it was. One person asked and I just said I'm not comfortable talking about it but thanks for asking. A few weeks ago a different coworker point blank asked me if I had bariatric surgery. Completely caught me off guard and I felt it was kinda rude. I looked her straight in the eye and lied. I said no, then gave my spiel about logging food etc. Best of luck on your journey!

I didn't want to tell anyone. I didn't want it to be the topic of all my conversations. I don't want anyone to think they have to do anything different for me because my requirements are different. And I didn't want anyone to try to talk me out of it or say derogatory things about it. It was already bad enough that people would tell me I was fat and needed to lose weight- as if I didn't know. That would have given them an excuse o bring it up.
Eventually, I had to tell my sister-in-law because we couldn't care for my mother-in-law that weekend so I thought she needed to know. When I told her she said, "I know. my husband told me. and my mother-in-law told him. " Turns out my husband had already blabbed it to his mother who can't keep a secret or even remember that something is secret. My husband just said, oh I didn't know you didn't want anyone to know.
after surgery, my M-I-L kept asking "can you eat this?" several times a day. that got old fast.
I still haven't told any of my friends except for one because we've been through a lot together.
if people ask, I say I'm seeing a nutritionist (which they seem to accept) and if they keep asking I say its similar to keto- because it sort of is.

I saw someone post once, "No one asked me the details about my weight gain or how I got there, so they don't need to know the details of my weight loss or how I'm getting there" LOL!
For me only my immediate family know as well as 3 close friends.

So this is my weight loss journey start 12/01/17. I’ve lost a total of 80 lbs all together and 7lbs of that since I’ve had the surgery on 03/20/2019. I’m going to continue to work hard once I can.

Hey guys, thought i’d share a before an after pic. I was sleeved on 5Sep18, the red shirt is 171.3kg(376.86lbs) my highest weight pre-op and the green shirt is 127.5kg(280.5lbs) thats a total loss of 43.8(96.36lbs) my first goal weight is to get to 110kg(242lbs) and my final goal is to reach 100kg(220lbs). Never felt better about myself and this was the best life changing decision i’ve made in my entire life. I love myself more now, more self confidence.

Here’s me. Sorry for the shirtless pics but I think it helps show my luck with scars and loose skin.

    Starting Weight: 268lb
    Surgery Date: 10/30/17
    Surgery Weight: 250lbs
    Goal Weight: 180lbs
    Current Weight: 144lbs

For the most part, I loosely stick to my food plan. I do venture outside of it often but I workout 6-10 hours a week, so it balances out.

I’m so glad I made this life changing decision! I love my new body and all of my health problems have gone away!

    PS thank you Kaiser!

    Hi everyone!

it's been a while since I've posted before and after pictures, so here goes. I am 19 months post-op (VSG) and am blessed to have such great results!

I am 51, 5'8" and while the weight loss is awesome, I most proud of what I have accomplished in my general fitness (thanks to great fitness training with an emphasis on strength training!)
Here's to success for each and every person on this board and on this journey - IT CAN BE DONE and YOU CAN DO IT.

Was sleeved in June2017, weight was 220lbs, didn’t manage to hit my GW due to severe reflux and the the passing of my father. Was converted to RNY bypass on the 30/04/1019, weight this morning was 168.5lbs so down 9lbs since my bypass, 30lbs to go. From UK size 22 to size 14. Still a work in progress 😀
