I suspect they are drinking liquids to wash the food through. No matter how big their pouch is, if its getting flushed they can keep stuffing more in.

First off I want to congratulate everyone who has lost weight with this surgery, from what I'm seeing it's still not the easiest thing even with surgery, so kudos to everyone!
But Penny infuriated me. I'm seeing that everyone here summed her up, she was a selfish, controlling, manipulative, attention seeking, demanding person, I don't know how else to describe her. I think her husband was so beaten down he could do nothing else but wait on her and get her food, and I'm sure he was sneaking her food in the hospital. She doesn't need oxygen either. Her poor son, he's the victim. She will never lose weight. I'd love to have this surgery to aid in weight loss and can't due to expense, and she wasted it. Makes me sick.

Well I did it. I am now down to 198.4 lbs. My doctor is planning surgery for June as there are no OR slots till then. I plan on losing more so she can't deny me my surgery for any reason.

Aaww that's a bit sad that she has felt she has to remove herself from her family. It is a tough time with everyone enjoying Christmas dinner around us when all we can have is liquids but hopefully she will realise that each day is a closer step to a healthier new life for her. In a year's time she will look back and it will just be a faded memory. Please let her know there is support out there - even if it is a message board like here, or yourself.

I just finished watching her up date. Honestly, this is going to be bad and judgmental. Is she serious??? Her poor son and husband. Talk about denial! Watching her was like watching g a heroin addict choose the drug over their children. Her food addiction is out of control. I'm sure she loves her son. But, I'm sick watching her and how full of excuses she is.
Yes I sound like a jerk, but, I feel so bad for her son.
I'm normally not this type of person of being mean, becUse we all have weight issues In common. But she's gonna die within the next two years at this point

I have nothing against Penny personally. In fact I wish her the best. She is exactly like us, in the sense that her weight has taken adverse control over her life. She reached the point where she had to decide whether to go on as she has been and face a pretty certain death, or take a chance on Bariatric surgery in partnership with committing to change her lifestyle. It's a pivotal moment that every single one of us has had to face ourselves.
My problem with Penny is that she's treating this once in a lifetime chance like a game. And even worse, she perpetuates the stereotypical image of fat people as lazy, slovenly, blobs of goo that sit around all day eating Bon Bons and watching TV, while more than likely on full disability. She has turned her husband into a full time caretaker and is only able to interact with her son as far as her span of reach from a bed that she chooses to never leave. And it is a choice in her case.
Yes, her husband is an enabler, but Penny is the problem. She's a born narcissistic manipulator and should had never ever been operated on in the first place. It's because of her and others like her that those of us who are ready to make the commitment are made to wait months, and sometimes years for our own chance at a new life.

I have not seen the update but by your reactions, it's obviously not a success.
Take her away from her enabler and see how much she loses
Another thing - Penny - by sitting in bed with your laptop in front of you, you are reading all of the comments people are making about you, not only here but on the page for the show. How sad.

Well it has been quite a few years since I have been here, but I think the time is right.

I was banded in 2008 and got down to 100kgs. Stayed there for about 6 months then just slowly started creeping up again. I would go in for a fill, go back about 6 weeks later, and no difference or an increase in weight. So late last year (2012) I had a hernia that my surgeon had to repair and I said to him this band isn't working. I had also just been diagnosed with Hashimotos disease (thyroid) so he said to me, get your thyroid under control and we can either do a sleeve or a bypass.

Due to being unable to take a lot of time off work for recovery, I chose to have the bypass done and the band removed at the same time. This was done on Tuesday 3rd December. Everything went well with the surgery and it was discovered that the port had completely come away from the band.

The most disheartening moment? Getting on the scales in the hospital!! With all of the fluids from the drip, my weight had gone to 129kgs!

2 weeks Pre op Optifast 125.9kgs

Pre op admission to hospital 120.5kgs

Home from hospital Saturday 7th December 126.8kgs

    This morning 116kgs

Tomorrow is my first visit back to the dietician and I see my surgeon in the new year. I was extremely lucky that this surgery was classed as a redo and I did not have to pay my surgeon another $5K.

So excited today! Had surgery on 10/23 at 240. I was 207 at Thanksgiving and stayed there until Christmas. I was so frustrated and couldn't believe I had my stomach removed and STILL wasn't losing. In the meantime, I dropped about 1.5 sizes during that month and as I read about what it really means to lose and regain Water weight, I felt a bit better.
And now for the amazing part-- after the month long stall, I am now at 195 today! I am down 12 lbs in less than 2 weeks following that long stall! So hang in there and follow your program and you will break through it!

Like every other reply that I've read, yes - I can lose weight. 50 lbs takes just a few months, but keeping it off is a game that I've never been able to win... and I don't seem to be able to pass 50 lbs off, no matter where I start.
The biggest difference that I've noticed since surgery is the fact that I am not hungry. Hunger has always been a player in my little weight loss game, no matter what diet I was on. So this time, I lost 20 lbs between deciding on surgery and starting the preop diet, 20 lbs on preop diet, and I've lost 27 lbs in the 29 days since the day of surgery. Since surgery, I have to remind myself to eat - that makes it a whole lot easier to stick to the plan.
I think the coolest thing that happened is yesterday, when I took my kids to the froyo shop because they had been begging for ice cream - I didn't want any. I could have eaten it, it wouldn't have bothered my sleeve, but I just simply did not want any. That is the first time in my life that I didn't want something cold, sweet, or creamy.

When people see you all of the time they don't notice as much as someone who has not seen you for a while. Keep at it - the best feeling is when you see someone do a double take because they don't recognise you at first glance

Great show - we even get it here in Australia. I agree with everyone about how this episode made me feel angry that she was wasting such an opportunity. I wonder if they will follow up with Penny in the next season?

I lost a lot of hair around the 6 month mark post surgery. My Vitamins etc were all good so that wasn't it. I had it cut shorter (not too short) and have been using Nioxin Shampoo and conditioner and treatment. It has grown back but I never had any Patches of baldness, it was just very thin all over.

Thank you for your posts and updates. Your are an inspiration to me. I had first band in March 2008 and have gone through 2 slips and had RNY on Dec 15, 2014 and now 3 weeks post op and things are going well, just an adjustment as expected.
