  1. My family physician sent in a referral in 2011. In 2012 I got a letter saying that I had been approved, and that wait times were long so I should just be patient and wait. I actually forgot I had been referred, so much time passed (or I thought they had decided not to give me the surgery) until November of 2018 when I received a letter saying that I was scheduled for a seminar on Jan 22nd. At the seminar they said to start the pre-op diet (2 weeks full liquids, the rest of the time 900 - 1200 calories/day) because they were scheduling people for their consultation in March and wanted us to have lost 10-20 lbs by then. So... 8 years? But there are only 2 doctors in my area who perform the surgery and there's a 1500-person waiting list (this is through public health. I'm sure if I were to pay for the surgery it would go much more quickly).
