Hello... I'm 6 weeks post op, and I've noticed some people struggle with portions while others don't. Some can eat 2 bites and be done, wish that were my case, but I have to watch how many ounces I eat at a setting so that I don't overdo it. The softer the food it seems, the more I can eat. Soups I can eat 6oz easy, while meat only about 2oz. The best thing that you can do for yourself is to try and limit your servings, and stay within the guidelines that you were given. Best of luck, it gets easier with time, I struggled a lot with this at first while introducing solids back into my diet.

I thought the same thing. I eat soy sauce and Sriracha in my broth sometimes and never had it trigger. But you never know what's gonna effect people in different ways..

For me it wasn't until the more solid stage that I started to feel my stomach signs of fullness. The more solid the food, the more I feel it. I had never gotten that omg I may have eaten too much feeling until the food was pretty solid and dense. When I eat things like Soup and yogurt and cottage cheese, etc I just don't feel full when I have the recommended 4oz. That is what my plan portion is so I serve myself that. My nutritionist said it's ok to have a snack between meals so I'll have an orange or an apple or a pickle or something an hour or so later, I can usually feel that and it helps my head hunger a bit.

Hang in there, if the soft food doesn't do much for you like me, the more solid food almost certainly will. Right now you're training your stomach to eat again, and it sucks that some of us don't feel it as easy as others do, but as you progress in stages you will feel it a little more. The important thing is to 1> get in your Protein. 2> stick to recommended portion size and allowed foods the best you can. You'll be glad that you did.

Soy sauce doesn’t usually have lots of sugar, it’s full of salt. It seems like a strange thing to have triggered dumping

I think just cutting back to a 1000 calorie diet sounds harder than the 2 week liquid pre op I was made to do (I'm kinda all or nothing). Your diet seems like it would need a lot of will power while limiting real food intake. What kept me on point pre op was the fear of doing anything to mess up my surgery from happening. Do your best, wish I had some tips for you, but I would be struggling just like you. Just know that after surgery you'll be lucky to take in 600 cal a day, that includes Protein Shakes. Something to look forward to. Stay strong, you can do this.

Yah... After everything is complete, you've jumped through hoops to fulfill all of the requirements and you're waiting for the approval, it can be pretty nerve wracking. Hang in there and hopefully the next call you get from your Dr's office is the one to schedule your pre op appointment. Best of luck on your journey beyond surgery, it really is a life changer. ❤️

I understand to some extent (no-one has walked in your shoes obviously). I cried beforehand too asking myself who was I to subject my family to the risk of major surgery and my potential loss just to lose weight I should have moved more and eaten less to lose...

...then I looked back at each of my attempts and attempts by peers that ended up worse than useless. All the cyclical guilt and progressive chipping away of ability and heart to try again.

Then I looked back at the stats that said it's not just me. 90% of dieters regain. Then the stats for serious heart, bone, and blood disorders I was suffering or almost certain to suffer soon. Would I catch some mysteriously different wave, despite the painful joints and crushing self loathing that kept me in the house whenever there was a choice? Would I get enough weight off to counter those almost certain ill effects? How many more years with my family would I lose before I got there, if I got there?

Then I looked at the success rates currently known and the safety record for these surgeries for my surgeon and his team because I had managed that risk pretty hard with research.
Then I reckoned, even if I had moderate regain, it would like be 2 or so years going in the right direction. 2 or so years not going another morbidly obese BMI data point higher. 2 odd years to reset and regain some mobility and motivation even if I'm only as successful as the 30% who struggle the most to lose.

It all added up to a good choice. A brave choice. A kick start and a tool to gift to the strong, resilient, courageous me that has been hiding from a world too stupid to see the help you needed.

Then I did look at the identity I'd forged since being a fat five year old. I'd never been 'normal', never been classically 'attractive', but I'd mostly enjoyed not having to compete on the modern beauty playing field...it always looked an utter waste of money, time, and energy. Not chuffed at the prospect of being involuntarily judged on that yardstick in future if I'm booted out of the fat pigeonhole. I was comfy telling folk to f-off from my cosy corner of the fat pigeon hole because I was usually better than them at my job, and generally at being a worthwhile human. So that will be interesting, but hey, 5 weeks post sleeve I'm already ready to tell them to bring it on. Plus thanks to folk like Jamilla Jamil and many others it's a far leveller playing field.

A long, long, long and flowery way of saying it is of course your choice, but I suspect you didn't make it lightly and all the reasons you are here haven't gone away. I hope you find your peace soon. xxx

This is a life changing decision, yes your life will change drastically, your husband will still love you even though your weight will change he fell in love because of who you are, you will still be you, your family and friends will have different opinions some good some bad just try to stay away from the toxic ones unfortunately friends will change and some of them will try to put you down, in my case my father in law was opposed to the procedure but I told him the last the decision was already made and that I didn’t want his permission just his support flash toward 11 months I’ve lost 138 pounds I’m weighing 172 pounds and he tells me I can still lose some more weight I’m 5’11 I just don’t pay attention to him anymore.
you are not vain for wanting a better life style, I can run with my kids I don’t get tired I had a heart condition before surgery I don’t any more don’t have to take any kinds of pills for my heart, sex got so much better I don’t feel tired the whole day and even stopped snoring I can shop for regular clothes and I’m not ashame of taking pictures. For the first time in I don’t know how long I’m healthy if people want to think I’m vain that’s their problem I’m just happy I’m gonna be around to watch my kids grow up.

the road is a hard one but try to keep your eyes on the price this surgery is not a magic pill that will make you thin from night to day is a tool to help you achieve a healthier lifestyle you need to work your ass off go to the gym or do sports or martial arts, stick to your Dr orders don’t take anything for granted if you are unsure of something call your doc I’m sure he’ll answer any question you might have stay away from sodas or any carbonated drinks and from sugar don’t eat and drink at the same time and always take your Vitamins and Protein as long as you follow your Drs orders this won’t be a failure

congrats on giving your first step towards a healthier future
also keep posting I found that talking to people who went through the same things helped a lot

You'll do great! You have amazing insight to some great questions before surgery! Line yourself up with a therapist for post care support! The surgery is only a tool. Every question you have is valid and you'll need some great support systems lined up! Have a successful surgery!

Being in emotional pain for the better part of 45 years and now in physical pain for several years and after dozens of failed attempts to lose weight, I've decided on bariatric surgery. Surgery is scheduled for March 6, 2019. I was excited for about a minute... then the fears set in.
How drastically will my life change when I lose the weight? Will my husband and I still love each other? Will our lives take such different paths that we grow apart? What will family and colleagues say/think? Am I vain for wanting to do this? Then there is the uncertainty of success...
Can I truly commit to this new lifestyle? Will this be added to list of failures? I am committed to this decision and yet as I sit here while the family is still asleep, with tears streaming down my face, I keep asking myself "why are you afraid to be thin?"

I remember that “stuck” feeling! I would suggest eating slower, taking smaller bites, chewing 30 times and adding liquid to your food before you eat it rather than trying to “wash it down” after. (Are you waiting at least 30 min after eating to take a drink?) I was so excited to have puréed chicken after my liquids phase that I tried it on one of my first days and it did not go down well! It felt stuck and slimed in my throat until I spontaneously threw up. All purées are unfortunately not equal at this stage—the more dense (like meat and eggs) the more likely you will be to have issues with sticking/sliming in your throat.

I am 48 and had my sleeve bypass on 12-11 It is so far the best thing I have ever done in my life, I have been vary lucky and have had no problems. The reason I made this choice is because of all of the pain I have in my legs and feet. I had a stroke 4 yrs ago. Then 4 month later I had accepted meningitis was in a coma for a week, I have chronic lyme disease and then got Gillian berriet syndrome so over 4 yrs I gained 179 lbs I almost lost my life. I now have 2 grandsons 2 and 3 and I cant even move without major pain. I feel this will get me my life back and give me the chance to live. I think age has nothing to do with wanting to feel good about yourself, 50 is the new 30. Take the chance to be healthy. I have already lost 19 lbs and can't wait yo continue to get healthy. Let me know how things go for you. Get excited to start your life again.

Wendums reacted to Shoelace in Having surgery Monday-What to wear?
I wore out what I wore in. Sweat pants and a loose top..t shirt type. No one cares what you look like and you go in, strip into hospital clothes until you go out. Sure, toothbrush, phone, brush, toothbrush and paste, slippers and i agree with the soft pillow for the seatbelt going home.
My other suggestions are: earplugs, eye mask for sleeping, you have to bring your CPAP if you use one and something like lavendar to put over your nose if need be. I found the smell in the wards could be quite overwhelming.
All you'll want to do that first bit is sleep. They'll get you up and walking but you won't go far..around the wards, that's it..everyone else will look just like you! Not likely you'll be able to read a book. Maybe do some social media on your phone but honestly, that gave me a headache in there! lol!

I just wore the same sweats to and from. But I wish that I would have packed a robe, You'll be expected to walk around the hallway after surgery. Cell phone charger, wound up using that. They supplied me with socks even though I packed some. I packed fresh undergarments and a tank top for the trip home. I wore my hair in a ponytail the whole time and didn't shower until I got home the next day. I took my cpap machine and used it. Forgot my pillow, but the hospital let me use as many as I wanted, I had them behind me and on both sides of me. I basically went into low maintenance for my stay, I just wanted to rest and recover and go home.

Wendums got a reaction from Orchids&Dragons in Is there any way to waive the 6 month pre op supervised diet requirements with BCBS? Any Dr recommendations in MI that will?
My surgery group does a lot of WLS's each month and our pre op supervised visits were in a group setting of about 10 - 12 patients (we would individually see the Dr each time, but nutrition was in group). It seemed as though we were all there because it was required for our medical insurance authorization. Some of us for 6 monthly visits while others only required 3. Some of these patients were revisions and they were still required to do it. You may get away with not having to go if you pay out of pocket, but I don't see how they would be able to get around insurance requirements, my Dr office was pretty clear on this.
I know it's a pain to wait this long, but it really does help you prepare for this life change and if you can put up with all of the pre op requirements you are obviously dedicated to it. best of luck.

Oh nice and congratulations on your surgery date. Keep in mind that we are the lucky few and that not everyone is as fortunate as us to be able to have this done. I have had a few surgeries in the past and nerves are usually there, it's natural. I just surrender to them and remind myself that my personal experience of the surgery will be- I will go to sleep and then I will wake up, it's that simple.... and it happens that fast. Good Luck Monday, my surgery was on a Monday too.
