Hi kayfreeatlast, Congrats and good luck on your upcoming surgery. I know what you are going through in regards to your husband. My husband is being supportive only because I've made my decision and I'm not changing my mind. I hated to be so harsh, but I told him he can either get on board with my decision or sit back and watch. This train is taking off either way!! Of course he'd prefer if I lost weight without surgery. He doesn't think I need it. However, he now understands that I need his support in order to make this transformation successful (after meeting my surgeon). My brother in law is giving me a hard time. He's trying very hard to prove his point that I don't need the surgery. He told me that I was being selfish. I told him, he is right about me being selfish. For the first time in a long time, I'm putting me first. I need to take care of me in order to take care of my daughter. If that's being selfish, then so be it.

sheademo29 reacted to SteveT74 in Stall since beginning exercise?
What you are experiencing is totally normal and should be expected. If you start a diet/lifestyle and don't incorporate exercise in that new lifestyle, you can lose plenty of weight with diet alone (with or without bariatric surgery). The moment you change your lifestyle habits by adding in what sounds like a new and reasonably intensive exercise regimen, you're going to probably experience what appears to stall or slow down in weight loss. Your body will begin to increase your volume and percentage of skeletal muscle--which is a good thing. Muscle burns calories at rest, which enhances your metabolism even when you're not at the gym. At the same time, muscle is more dense than fat. You can lose inches by adding muscle, but your total weight stays the same (depending on the rate that you burn through your fat reserves). In the beginning of your new exercise regime, you may initially gain muscle faster than you lose excess fat. This could look like a gain or stall on your scale, since a regular scale only tells you how much you weigh--without distinguishing fat from muscle or considering body composition. If you have a good BIA scale or invest in something like an Omron Body Fat Monitor (Omron HBF-306C Body Fat Monitor) you'll see a change in your body composition over the course of a few weeks of moderate to intense training (with a drop in body fat % and increase in skeletal muscle). As long as your body fat is dropping and your muscle mass is increasing, you're making progress in your weight loss journey. After a few weeks, you'll see the scale drop as your body (including your new muscle tissue) needs to burn more calories to meet your daily requirements and turns to fat tissue to get the job done (provided you are sticking closely to your diet).
Here's a tip--never fall into the trap of thinking that because you're hitting the gym, you can eat more calories--that's how you get into a true stall or end up gaining weight. Adding calories with exercise only applies to certain types of athletes and bodybuilders (which should exclude pretty much everyone on this forum--myself included!!).
Another tip is to keep your cardio to a reasonable amount, but don't over do it. Most experts and trainers would advise that a non-athlete do no more than an hour of cardio a day at a moderate to reasonably intense level (spending most of your cardio time getting your heart rate into zone 3 or 4 (your BPM changes with age, so you should look into this for yourself using this Target Heart Rate Chart. Also, you may want to increase your weight training from 2 days a week to 4. Even better, you might want to try doing something like a boot camp class or orange theory, which combine weight training and cardio into a one hour class so you're doing both at the same time. This is called High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and it's probably the most effective and time efficient way to get fit (and lose weight). Don't let the name scare you, what's high intensity is always relative to your age and fitness level so anyone can do it.
[P.S. I worked as a certified personal trainer for about 4.5 years when I was in my 20's--seems like a lifetime ago. I know what to do, just haven't been doing the right things for myself for a long time!].

OK. This is going to sound Keto-ish but it's the truth. Your body only runs off of burning sugars or fat. When we were babies, our bodies would burn fat first for fuel. Fat-burning bodies are like candles and slow-burning so you stay satiatiated longer, sugar-burning bodies are like microwaves...instant (carbs are also sugar), which is why you crave more sugar (feel hungry) quicker. Your body adapts to either way...like an addict. Our natural state is to use fat as fuel first then sugars. But, if you give it a quick fix with sugars long enough you will have to retrain it to burn the fat first. That's why we forgot to eat when we were younger and could go long periods of time without food. As we aged and leaned into our processed sugar addictions, we were told that we could still eat sugar and be thin if we just eliminate fat from our diets. This is such a backwards way of thinking, especially now that you have re-set your body and only have a small pouch in which to nourish it. Train it to burn fats and eliminate sugars/carbs from your diet. You have a one ounce stomach to pack full of nutrient, Vitamin, mineral rich foods. Use it wisely. Good fats are healthy and necessary. Avocados, almond butter, butter, WHOLE cottage cheese, etc. Fat free is devoid of a lot of the beneficial stuff but still has processed stuff and sugar in it that your body feels freaked out and in starvation mode about. Your body will never have a chance to burn fat like that. Plus your skin will look dry and old. You need oils and natural foods. Don't be afraid of eating like a whole healthy person. You will stay satisfied and satiated longer and place your body in fat-burning mode (ketosis). Your skin and hair will look great and your body will respond better. No more fat-free. Keep up Drinking your fluids, sometimes what we feel is hunger or appetite is really residual stomach acid. Your body as well as YOU have been through a lot in a very short time. Be kind, be good to yourself, this does pass and your road ahead gets more beautiful every day. And this is a lead-pipe cibch!

I am a noobie...but I just wanted to say that I had a mini sugar free no crust cheesecake the first day of my pre-op diet.
I also added soy sauce and teriyaki to my one meal a day of broiled shrimp and steamed broccoli - the first two days of my pre-op diet.
I lost 10lbs pre-surgery and adhered hardcore to my pre-op diet after those first two days.
We are all adults. We all make decisions. Some of those decisions have consequences. That is what life is. This won't be the first time nor the last when you are going to be faced with a choice of going out and what to eat or not to eat.
My liver looked awesome. My surgery went well and super quick.
I have adhered to my post op died 100%. I walk 4 miles a day and log everything in my fitness pal ( I plan on being back in the gym next week). I just started on purees - I am preparing everything from scratch. I am a little over 2 weeks out.
I don't think having steamed, or broiled fish and steamed low carb vegetables mean you aren't taking things seriously at all. You seem educated and aware.
Email your doc or pa - they will probably give you a thumbs up.

Weight regain can happen with any type of surgery. Behavior change and the choices you make will be a factor in your outcome. There are many sleevers that have kept the weight off long term.

I’m actually doing liquids of my own volition. I was given the option to do two shakes and a meal or just liquids. I felt that liquids are more regimented and I’m already down 7lbs. But thank you for the info on the sushi! It’s not my first time having it, I’m aware of the carbs and sodium in regular rolls.

Do you really think it’s a good idea to ask a bunch of strangers with no medical degree if it’s OK to go against your surgeon’s instructions? There’s a medical protocol for this surgery for a reason.

I don't see any problem with eating fish and veggies. My liquid allow Protein 4-6 oz protein with veggie or salad. Just make sure the fish is steam or baked and skip on the sauce or gravy. Its not like you are going to eat a big mac, or a pizza.
    Good luck!

HI and congratulations on your journey so far. My surgery is April 29th and I am super excited. Today I signed all of my consent forms. During this stage so I've eliminated sweets, coffee and chips. I have also been drinking Premier Protein shakes and have my pre-op class on April 3rd. I believe there is a thread for May surgeries that was started. Check it out to see if you have any surgery buddies there.
Wishing you the best in your journey.
