MMME reacted to allwet in Is losing 50% of excess weight the standard?
can you get to that 100% of excess weight loss, sure, maybe, who knows.
i know that's a shitty answer. I see 60% of excess weight thrown around all the time and that means some lose more and some lose less. So many things will come into play for you and most if not all are in the responses above.
Follow your plan and never stop even when it gets slow or stalls and take all the time needed and dont compare your loss and the pace of that loss to anyone else.
I hit the 100% number but i consider myself a little fanatical about the whole process (sleeved)
Not everyone could or should go the route i have taken but i have spent the last year learning my triggers and i know what i had to remove from my life to make this work for me (carbs) but not everyone has those same triggers so my way works for me but you have to find your way.
be honest with yourself and never do what you cant keep doing for the rest of your life.
Its more important that you build a new approach to food that you can maintain forever than any short term gain from a "Diet Plan"
will your new way look like a diet to others, yea could be, but you will know the difference cause you will not kid yourself about how you got here. Diets are what we did for 2 to 6 weeks before we gave up and went right back to what we were doing before.
Ask yourself if this will make you healthy - not skinny- if it is a healthy habit the weight loss will naturally follow. None of believed what we ate before was healthy it just was what we ate for whatever reason we gave ourselves at the time- easier, faster, comforting.
You will decide how much weight comes off - with all the proper cues from your body when you get there. Get all you can from this second chance but be happy with what you get and it will be a success no matter what the final number stops at.
    good luck

I'm headed to Canada in 10 days. If I can find room in my suitcase I'll bring you back some and send it over. I have a list of stuff to bring back that we can't get here.... Crystal Lite, chewable pregnancy Vitamins (my sister has been on them for 7 years post RNY), cheap clothes that don't look like K-Mart $3 t-shirts.

MMME reacted to Biddy zz 🏳️🌈 in Revision Band to RNY Bypass
I had my band put in during 2009. Like you, when they emptied it (in my case to ready me for chemo) afterwards I never again found that sweet spot. I had lost 40kg, and saw 25 creep on over 5 years.
So last December I took the plunge and had an RNY. I so wish I had done it at the start! The surgery, if it is keyhole, is similar. I had band out and RNY at the same time, and recovery, eating, drinking - a breeze.
But - it has been so much easier for me to make the RNY ‘work’ for me than it ever was for the band! And now I am over 45kg down from RNY surgery weight - about 60kg down from my highest weight. Now I weigh 61kg, I am running and scuba diving and I now cook, and it is fabulous low-carb, healthy and supremely tasty food - I am a new woman!
It is a great transition. I wish you as smooth a journey as I had!

MMME got a reaction from Mizzhappygolucky in Revision Band to RNY Bypass
I had my gastric band put in in 2009 and lost 41 kg (90 lbs) over about 18 months. I then had abdominoplasty in 2012 to get rid of 5 more kg (11 lbs) of skin. Once the surgeon took the Fluid out of the band for surgery it was stuffed! I could never get just the right amount of fluid in - 3.5 ml and I couldn't swallow even Water, 3.25 ml and I was starving. As a result I ended up gaining back 32 kg slowly over the last 6 years. I finally got fed up of feeling tired and fat and in pain all the time with bad knees, so asked my bariatric surgeon what we could do about it. He suggested revision to RNY, and I trust him implicitly, so said ok.
I had my band removed on July 17th and it was alright. I was only in overnight and like Matt he used the same incision points as my original surgery so no new scars (not that anyone looks at my belly anyway ). I did have a lot of post op shoulder tip pain, but that went away very quickly. I'm also very allergic to any kind of tape and developed a terrible blistered rash under the OpSite he used over the incisions. The only other downside was that I was able to eat anything I wanted and in large portions. I gained another 6 kg before my RNY on 26 September.
The RNY surgery was super easy. I was admitted at 6:30 am, taken to the OR at 7:30 and back in my room and wide awake at noon. I asked the nurse doing my obs if I could get up to go to the toilet and she said I could so I took myself for a walk around the ward before getting back into bed. I had absolutely no pain with any part of the surgery. He used Dermabond glue instead of bandages or Steri-Strips and it's pretty much all fallen off now. I think the worst part was having the drain removed 2 days post op. I was only in hospital for 2 nights, which suited me fine. I think people recover better at home where they can lie in their own bed, not be woken up every 2 hours for someone to check blood pressure and such.
I did go home with a terrible head cold (that I think my partner gave me) and developed shingles on the side of my face and up my nose, but honestly I'm sure that was a side effect of my body having to try to heal itself from the surgery and then the head/chest cold on top. I'm now 3 weeks out from the RNY and could not be more happy with my decision. I'm down 2 dress sizes and the pain in my knees is so much better.

Comparing yourself to another WLS patient is about as accurate as comparing a Car to a Building. 2 very VERY different things. You could have 2 twins, having the exact same starting weight, surgery, surgeon, etc etc etc etc and they would still lose at different rates.

Focus on you, not on others. There is no one else out there that is going to lose the way you do. No one.

    You are doing fine,
I suggest stop comparing if it's making you feel down. You should be doing a happy dance. approximately 15+ pounds so far...When was the last time weight came off at this rate for you? It's fantastic.
Many charts and statistics everywhere, I'm sure someone will be post some for you on this thread. You are more than the charts and statistics. There is no norm. It's not how fast you lose weight it's the fact you are losing weight.
    Congrats on your surgery

You have to remember you've just had a major surgical procedure. Your body is going to need time to heal itself and that won't be overnight. I do know how frustrating it is, though. I wanted more than anything to get my veggie garden planted yesterday but after sitting on the edge of the garden bed and putting in 4 cucumber plants I was done!

I'm originally from Burlington Ontario (small world, eh?) but live in Australia. I used to come to Guelph quite often when I was still in Canada. My brother lives up near Walkerton so we would stop for coffee at the half way point.

Surgery is booked for next Wednesday, 26 September at Hollywood Private Hospital in Perth Western Australia.

I make pumpkin Soup for my partner with the pumpkins I grow. Recipe below:
1 Kent pumpkin (it's a green skinned one) peeled and cubed - use whatever you can get
1 sweet potato peeled and cubed
    1 onion diced
Water to cover & 1-2 OXO chicken cubes
Simmer everything over low heat until very well done and mushy. Let cool to room temperature and then puree with a stick blender until it's smooth. Add about 2 cups of skim milk, a dash of ginger and a small dash of cayenne. Puree again with the blender and reheat before eating. It freezes really well, too.

Not cat napping, but not able to sleep much. I'm yawning and ready for bed at 10 pm, but when I actually lie down and get comfortable it's just tossing and turning for at least an hour, then awake at 5 am. I think tonight I'm going to try having a warm shower before I get into bed and maybe some chamomile tea around 9 instead of Water.

Sadly, WLS is also known as the divorce surgery for a reason.

Have you flat out asked him why he's trying to sabotage you? Why he doesn't want to see you healthy? I'd ask some very pointed questions and be VERY honest with how you feel.

I had basically this same exchange last week.

Well meaning co-worker: “You are doing amazing! What are you doing? What’s your secret?”

Me: “.... I had weight loss surgery.”

Probably not the response they were expecting, but like others, I’m comfortable disclosing it. The only opinion about my choice that matters is my own and part of my own body positivity/self love journey is owning my body, decisions about my body, and being confident about my body no matter its state or how it got there. 😀

36 hours post op and I feel better than I expected. Shower and brushing teeth were strangely the most wonderful things ever!
Only Water yesterday but today is 3oz per hour of some variety of fluids. broth for lunch (what seemed like a huge portion) with apple juice with Protein, and 2 other juices.
Hope my bypass twins are feeling great too. It's a big decision but I cannot wait to get my health and my life back. I've hidden behind drab ugly clothes for too long. It's time to feel better.

Hello everyone! Well very excited to tell you the surgery went very well. Tomorrow I will be two weeks post op and have been mostly on a liquid diet, but the small things I have eaten such as pudding and oatmeal have stayed down with no problem. I am having no abdominal pain other then the minor irritation from the incisions no worries there.
I am actually already feeling the results of having the large intestine back in tact and feeling the nourishment from the food I am ingesting. I am so happy at this point in time. I have now lost exactly 200lbs so I am over 40lbs past where I should have stopped. I obviously do not want to gain all my weight back but do look forward to at least being able to keep things down, in and get the benefit of my food intake whether or not I gain some back or not. I lost from a size 32/34 to currently a size 10. At over 5'9 and large framed that was a lot for the body to take in a year and a half.
I will let everyone know how it continues to go, but I do want to say thank you so much for all the kind words of support, and for those that have no other solution for severe bypass issues I am up till this point, proof that there maybe a solution albeit it may have to be a reversal.

I'm Dorothy but the initials are what my last name has been/will be. I've had M as my surname initial 3 times (birth, 2 marriages) but am getting married next year to an E.

I'm 55, originally from Canada but have lived in Western Australia for over 12 years. I had a gastric band in 2009 and lost 30 kg then had abdominoplasty/skin removal in 2011 and lost another 5 kg with that. However life got very difficult with several traumatic events and I turned to food as my comfort. Again. I'm now ready to get my life back and hopefully stop some of the chronic pain in my knees and ankles. I have gastric bypass booked on the 26th. I am looking forward to not feeling sweaty and uncomfortable in the 40° heat of a Perth summer. I'm looking most forward to feeling healthy again.
