  1. I am almost 5 months out and I just began this week eating sunflower seeds that are still in the shell. I have been trying to only eat the seed, but am worried that some of the shell may have been ingested. I am now feeling anxious that I may have somehow done damage to my pouch. Any information on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Also, is there a way to know if you have damaged your sleeve in any way? I am just concerned how easy is it to damage the sleeve with what you eat. Trying very hard to eat right, but I do sometimes fall backward and eat things I feel are not the best for my new diet. Thank you in advance for all feedback.

  2. I am almost 6 weeks out and I feel hungry a great deal of the time. I am having the same issues. I am very disappointed that I am not feeling the restriction as I thought I would. I can eat more than I am supposed to be eating at any meal. I stop myself because I know I shouldn't be eating that much. I was told to add vegetables also with my meal to help me feel fuller. I really wanted to feel restricted or nauseous, something that tells my brain to stop besides my own judgement and common sense, which if I had good judgement and common sense I would not have needed the surgery in the first place. My primary care doctor who specializes in weight loss told me he didn't care if I was eating a little bit more as long as I am showing that I am losing weight. My surgeon at my second follow up was surprised that I could eat more than 4 ounces and said that should be impossible that I should be eating less than 2 ounces. It is very difficult and can be a slippery slope. I continue to surprise myself however with mostly good decision making and control. I am also getting bored with the foods I am eating and having trouble finding variety. Good luck.

I'm almost 6 weeks out and I agree with this though I'm one to weigh often. Focus on your Protein and fluid goals. I stalled at the end of my 2nd week and it lasted approx 10 days. It was frustrating but after that, I've been seeing the scale go down bit by bit.

I can share with you what my nutritionist has told me starting with the pureed stage which really was part of my first 2 weeks after the first 24 hours (which only allowed drinking Water and chicken broth) and called the Funnel Diet. If it can fit though a funnel, it is ok. Still drink Protein Shakes. Aim for 40-60 g of Protein from shakes. Calories were 300-500 per day. It's important to pick low carb and low fat foods. You really want feel restriction on this state or with pureed however, I was allowed to start scrambled eggs during the 2nd week. My weeks 3-4 were textured and soft foods which included anything I had already eaten and I could add 1/4 c of textured foods like ground/shredded meats, fish, etc. The guideline was that if you can mash it with a fork, you can eat it. Chew, Chew, Chew. The calories were 400-700 and still get 40-60 grams of protein through shakes and 64 oz of Water. After week 2 is when I was told to start with supplements and Vitamins. The next stage came at week 5 and it really was not much different than week 3-4 except My protein went to 60-90 and I was told to try to get most of my protein from food. I only drink 1 shake per day now. I'm not supposed to drink 10 min before, during ,or 20 minutes after a meal. (some people are 30) I have a list of foods to avoid and am sticking with that at least until I get closer to my goal weight and then I will eat some of the foods from time to time or on special occasions. The other tip I was given is to aim for my carb grams to not exceed protein grams at every meal and snack.

Good luck and you will be moving to real food pretty quickly!

Thank you for your response it does help.

    Hi.

I am 5 days into my 2 week pre-op. It is a little harder then I thought it would be. I however feel like it is a mind thing. I similar to yourself am not quite the candidate do to weight, but also have uncontrolled diabetes, NASH, high cholesterol and now HB... so, I am doing this more for medical reasons, but could stand to loose the weight as well. My surgeon has me on a all liquid diet. I purchased the products from the office. It's a struggle that hopefully will pay off in the long run... Good luck with your Surgery and keep.us posted.

thank you for sharing and good luck on your journey. May it be easy for you to get through.

Try to calm down. There are other options to get support and help available.

Don't worry about weight loss at this point. Many doctors tell their patients not to weigh the first month because it can be so disheartening. You can't separate out weight loss from Fluid retention and swelling at this point. Work on getting your fluids and Protein, the rest will happen when it wants to. Stressing yourself out won't make it happen any faster.

You should feel no restriction on fluids; they go right through your sleeve. You won't really feel restriction until you get to soft foods. Believe me, you'll know. You won't overdo it on liquids unless they have calories. The 64 oz. is a minimum. If you are comfortable drinking more fluids than that, no problem.

Generally, I would say follow your doctor's plan for foods, but if they haven't given you any guidance - purees are any foods that have the texture of applesauce or smoother. At the puree stage, you can have purees or anything from an earlier stage, like full liquids. So you should be having a combination of smooth Soups (can add unflavored Protein powder), Greek yogurts, soft scrambled eggs, soft refried Beans, etc. or, anything that you can put in a blender. (Personally, I couldn't handle the texture of blended meats, but to each, their own.) This website has a recipe section for each stage of diet progression. You can also check out "puree stage foods" on Pinterest. That should give you some ideas, too.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

This helps tremendously. I was feeling all alone in this process. For liquids I was told to be on 300-400calories, but not sure how that changed once in purees. I will try to relax a bit more regarding the process, I just don’t want to do anything wrong or to hurt my new stomach. Thank you again.

  6. I am getting extremely frustrated. Please let me know if this experience is unique to me. I am 2 weeks post op, and I have not lost any weight in the second week. I know there is a 3 week stall is it possible to have a stall in the second week. I am not getting consistent information from the surgeon about my nutritional requirements and I am concerned because I am not feeling restricted on liquids and maybe I am over doing it. I was not having regrets, but I am starting to now. Also, I am able to start purees tomorrow and not sure what I can and cant have. I have another weird situation. My primary care doctor is the director of a nutritional and weight loss program. I got cleared for surgery by his nutritionist, however she does not specialize in bariatrics. Now I need a nutritionist that does specialize in bariatrics, and the one recommended by the surgeons office says she cant treat me because I did not do the initial evaluation with her. I am at a loss because I don't know what I should and should not be doing. My surgery was uncomplicated, however getting information I need to be a success has been very complicated. My doctor's office has given me contradicting information both pre and post op, and I am beyond frustrated and in tears. I want to be a success but all I see is failure in my future. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I was sleeved August 21st by Dr Ilan in Mexico and I feel like mine is almost too good. I was in pain when I first woke up but since then I have been walking and no issues. I got home last night and finally feel, all the gas is out from the surgery and general flying. I have not hit my goal with Water yet but I don't have to sip, I can drink normally, my stomach just gurgles a bit. I do have hunger pains, right now I am sating them with broth and Protein Water. I got 46 ounces of water and 47 Proteins so far today, went for a nice walk and am feeling great. This makes me think I am broken and it did not take, between the ease of swallowing, the hunger pains, and the lack of pain or issues. Anyone else?

Oh my gosh, I was sleeved on August 27th. I was in a lot of pain and one week later it is finally feeling better. However the situation you are having with the water is the same as me. I have been asking all along this message board if my surgery failed because I feel no restriction in taking in liquid.

  8. Thank you Frustr8 so much for continuing to check in. Hope you had a great weekend also. Needed help with another problem or question. I am able to drink lots of liquid while sipping of course. I don't get a sense of feeling full. I am concerned the surgery is not going to work because I don't feel restricted. I here people cannot get their liquids in post op, however that does not seem to be an issue. I can drink all day wrong. Is something wrong with the procedure or sleeve. I am so scared I did this and it wont work now.

The hospital just called to tell me my surgery is at 3:30 PM on Monday! I’m so irritated that it is so late in the day. It’s bad enough that I’m so nervous as it is and now I have to sit on Monday waiting for my surgery. Also, right now is that time of the month (ladies) and I am just so irritable in general. I just want to get this over with. Why would he schedule a surgery so late?!! 3:30 isn’t even the time! That’s the time I have to be in the building for pre-admission. SO ANNOYED!
I had similar Experience but not that extreme. I was first told to be at hospital at 9:30am. Then 11:30am for a 1:30 surgical time. Surgery didn’t start until after 3pm. Very frustrating. I also just began my cycle the day before surgery making it that much more uncomfortable. Good news is you are doing it. Best of luck.

  10. I am one week post op today and doing a full liquid diet. I never seem to have the sense of being full and feel I can drink as much liquids in small sips as I want. I stop myself because I want to be in control. I have only felt hunger about 4 times since surgery. The rest of the time I feel comfortable. I am afraid it is not working and I am not being restricted. No nausea or vomiting either. Is this sleeve going to work? Feeling really anxious. List about 17 pounds Pre op but one week post op maybe only 4 or 5. Is this normal?

  11. Hi All,

I am 4 days post op and I am finally feeling like I am not going to die. I have turned a corner and the pain is finally a bit more bearable. It was a hard road but I am doing it. I am about 18-20 pounds down from the beginning of preop. this is about 2 1/2 weeks. Thank you for getting me through. Not easy but glad it is done.

with the help of supositories, i had my first BM at 5 days post op. it was pebble-like (for lack of a better word lol). my second BM came 7 days after the first and it was pure agony. i practically gave birth to a steal turd for 60 minutes. lol

my doctor toldme to try Milk of Magnesia which worked BEAUTIFULLY.

as a long term solution youd obviously have to drink more and get more Fiber.

also, remeber, a big part of why BMs are challenging soon after surgery is because your actual bowel is recovering from surgery as well so itll also get better naturally the farther you get from surgery.

    goodluck :)

Oh my gosh, you know you are not supposed to make a pre op gal laugh. thank you for sharing, I have a call into my doctor for some other questions, so I will mention this as well. I had similar problems pre op with the steal turd reference. I so get it. afraid that will be the case now as well. I was also looking for some sleevers who's weight was not super high. I am in that league also and felt guilty posting my starting weight so I didn't. I have a lot of medical problems that are due to my uncontrollable eating. I started at about the same weight as you. It makes me feel better to find others who start out a little lower.

  13. I probably am not walking as much as I should, but I am trying. I do have bad gas pain and it gets relieved and then it comes right back. I cannot imagine how much gas can be in one body. I am also having bad incisional pain on trying to get up. thank you for support. I am hoping that each day will get better. Hearing others experiences helps. my doctor is making me crush all meds and I am on so many. I have been able to swallow small pills, however I am afraid to do it even if I am can because of what it could do to new stomach.

  14. How long does it take to start feeling better after sleeve surgery. I am 2 days post op and pain is excruciating. I can hardly handle it. Also tips for taking crushed pills. That too is making me gag and be sick. What pain meds were people sent home with. I am given 1 Percocet every 6 hours and my first dose home it made me sleep, but when I woke up an hour and a half later pain was so bad.
