Elle_Woods got a reaction from BostonWLKC in For those who have lost weight- how does it feel to be thin?
Thank you all for your thoughtful replies :) reading them is really helpful. I don’t think the surgery or even the weight loss will be some magic bullet and my life will just be perfect! I know it will still be hard. I already obsess about diet and exercise also-but then am still overweight!!!! I cannot tell you how frustrating that has been. Or to lose some of the weight, only to gain it all back and then some when I quit the crazy restrictive diet.
I love the idea of having more self confidence and when I do eat well and exercise- getting lasting results.
I have done a lot of researching and reading about obesity and the mechanisms of obesity surgery. It really is sooo complicated and the surgery helps lower your body to a lower set point. I think that is pretty amazing and shows obesity is so much more complicated than calories in calories out.
Congrats to everyone who has lost the weight and is happy :) that is amazing and I am glad you had good results from your surgery!

Hey all! Looking forward to starting this journey in two weeks. I am wondering what it is like for those of you who are now “thin” or who have lost the weight? Do you lead a pretty normal lifestyle? Do you still obsess about nutrition and exercise?

I have mine on August 13th! ahhh I am excited but a little nervous. What is everyone doing to prepare?
I am thinking I will buy an assortment of like Protein Drinks and shakes and Protein water....I plan to eat really well and go ahead and get in the habit of going to the gym a few days a week. I have kind of been eating and drinking whatever I wanted the last couple weeks, but am ready to go ahead and move into this healthy lifestyle :)

Thank you all for the replies! This makes me feel better.
For those who did not do a pre-op diet, did you doctor tell you to eat in any specific way? Were you supposed to lose weight before surgery anyway?

Awesome! Thank you all for the good info and advice :) I am glad to know I am not the only one. I am on a vacation this week then i will have 5 weeks once I get home before surgery. I plan to eat very nutrient dense super healthy foods to prepare my body for surgery! And prepare my mind for what I will be eating after.

Hey all! I just joined last week. I have my last pre-op appointment on July 31st, and surgery schedule for August 13th! Feeling lots of emotion and a little scared but know this is the best decision for me.../

I've lost 63lbs in the past by using diet and exercise...and put it all back on again...several times.
My own body stymied me every time. I used to feel guilty and weak-willed about this, until my surgeon explained to me that my body thought I was in a famine, so my metabolism dropped and I produced more hunger hormones. If you think you can beat a mechanism like that - go ahead and try.
I took the plunge and had a VSG, because I reckoned that if I did what I'd always done, I'd get what I'd always got.
And I'd had enough of that.

Elle_Woods got a reaction from Frustr8 in Considering a lap band - scared after reading this forum!
I am having surgery with Dr. Garber in New York City, he does single incision gastric sleeve surgery in the belly button that is “virtually scarless”. I am 31 and have a 32-33 BMI. He recommended I do the sleeve over lap band as he says they are falling out of favor due to complication risk. I don’t like the idea of a foreign device in my body. If I could have gotten a scarless gastric sleeve surgery when I was 21, I would have done it. It does not get any easier in your 30’s!!

Tomorrow is 4 weeks until the liquid diet and 6 weeks until surgery. I'm counting down every day!
Today I was bad and ate a few things I shouldn't have but since I won't be able to eat them after surgery I just had to have it now. I know that's a terrible way to think. Back to healthy eating tomorrow!

My surgeon said I didn’t need to lose any weight before surgery. His rationale was that if I could successfully lose weight then I wouldn’t be considering surgery in the first place so he feels all the added pressure and stress caused by dieting isn’t a productive use of time.

He just told me to start practicing for the post-op way of life.

My doctor doesn't require it. He told me they have no way to verify whether we follow one or not, so they don't bother. He said eat as I normally would, just don't go crazy.

I will have a 4-week low-calorie pre-op diet specifically geared toward liver shrinkage. Here are the requirements:

Breakfast: 1 Protein Shake paired with fruit or vegetables
Lunch: 1 Protein shake paired with fruit or vegetables
Snack: 1 low-fat dairy snack paired with fruit or vegetables
Dinner: 3oz. lean protein, 1 serving whole grain, and vegetables

Also, the dietician also said the Protein Shakes should contain:
    less than 200 calories
    greater than 25g protein
    less than 10g of sugar

She specifically recommended Premier Protein shakes. I know they are less expensive other places, but I wanted to get the nutrition information to ensure they would meet the requirements. I have yet to try this brand, but chocolate is my favorite flavor of other brands, especially Adkins.

My ex. doctor just wanted patients to eat low carb high Protein and then clear liquid the day before, I found this out just before he kicked me to the curb. Current doctor, liquid diet before, length of time depends on BMI and physical condition. Any Help?

Elle_Woods reacted to Screwballski in How are the May sleevers doing?
I had my Band to Sleeve revision on May 17. I weighed 180 (30 BMI) on day of surgery. I weigh 160 today at 5 weeks out. I’ve been stalled for a week but I’ve stopped stressing about things I can’t control. I’m already halfway to my goal!
Not having any trouble with any foods as long as I chew everything to purée consistently.  I had a band for over a decade, that’s just second nature.  I don’t often get hungry but when I do, very small portions of Protein rich foods fill me right up.  I’m so pleased with this choice.

I had my VSG on May 16th, I am down 25 pounds so far from surgery weight of 205. My HW was 231 in December, so overall a total of 51 pounds. I just started adding solid foods and I seem to stick to the softer vegetables, yogurt and cottage cheese with very little chicken. I can handle tuna but that's about it for meat right now. I can't eat refried Beans anymore they gag me now. I still have two Protein Drinks a day and my calories are between 500 and 700 a day. I feel great and can't believe the changes my body has made. I was wearing a size 18 and now a size 12 is getting loose. I am so thankful I had this surgery and look forward to a long, healthy life. Good luck to all of us!
