I’m a few weeks shy of 11-months post-op. I didn’t have any major complications. Had surgery on a Thursday morning and was released from the hospital the following afternoon. I was up and walking two hours after surgery. I didn’t have any issues with nausea. Pain was minimal. As far as weight loss goes, I’m ahead of schedule, so to speak—at least according to my surgeon’s office. At my 9-month follow-up, I had already lost 67% of my excess body weight. At this point, I’m almost at my goal weight, which was set by my surgeon’s office. All in all, weight-loss surgery was the best decision of my life. I have no regrets.

It's prohibited on my plan. I was warned about it on the day of my initial consultation. Because of that, prior to having surgery, I weaned myself off of caffeine and carbonated beverages.

Early on, I would use Milk of magnesia, a temporary fix, just to get things moving, so to speak. After bringing up the issue with my surgeon's office, they suggested I start taking a daily probiotic. I also started putting Benefiber in my Water. For no other reason than to save myself some money, I've stopped taking both the probiotic and Benefiber and replaced it with a homemade green smoothie every morning, as fruits and vegetables are naturally high in Fiber. That seems to have done the trick. For me, anyway.

it’s true! many of us bounce back from surgery, had no complications, lose weight and keep it off.
It seems that new people are not getting a balance look at weight loss surgery. I would love to hear all the positive stories. People with no complications.
Many people gravitate to the negative experiences. It will fuel your surgery anxiety. Your surgeon gave you the statistics and risk facts about weight loss surgery. Read some positives to give yourself perspective.

I'm 4 months post op with no complications and no regrets. Best decision I ever made and I only look forward now.
The first few days were rough but they are after most surgeries. Other than being tired, I could have gone back to work in week 2 I think..didn't but could have.
Losing nicely. Not fast but that's just fine and so far no real excess Hair loss.
    Absolutely no buyers remorse here!

4mo since VSG, 68yo, 23hrs in hospital. No pain, no complications. I was able to drink fluids and Protein Shakes with no problems. Best decision of my life.

Well, I had absolutely no surgery complications at 72, no gas, no tummy pain, really felt on top of the world, as the 60-70s song goes, my slide downhill wasn't until after 2 weeks later, when my stricture reared its nasty little self and no one believed me. They had the licenses and degrees, but I had been living in this body a long long time. Trust me, sometimes you have to be the squeaky wheel, advocate for yourself, without wheel grease you will lock up and freeze in place. Really would have preferred them to be right, but I was correct. Still riding the "tornado's tail "but will be resolved and all better soon. And through all the bumps, hairpin curves and foggy doldrums, I would NEVER EVER RETURN to the way I was sans my surgery. It is and was a miracle in my life , now weigh over 130 pounds+ less my highest weight, 75+ since my surgery, even with all the twists and interventions, don't know where I would be with a blameless recovery, but you know what, this still is my own trek, I'm a fighter, I will make it to goal and victory! I do respect the new woman. I am becoming for I know all I have encountered along the way ! And no previous diet ever did what my surgery did for me, a better future to come!🌈😜👍

Three and a half months from my sleeve surgery. I’ve not had any issues other than minor Constipation. Never had a problem eating and drinking Water. Down 50 pounds so far. Have not lost any hair yet (knocking on wood). No regrets!

I love my surgery. No issues that aren't just part of life and part of my medical history. I could drink from day 1 and was getting my Protein needs met within about 3-4days? I still sometimes don't believe my doc did surgery on me.
I'm now working on my third and last goal and am 56yrs young! Yeeehaw. This morning I ran 30minutes without stopping. A year ago, I could barely walk for 5 continuous minutes. It was seriously difficult.
Thanks for starting this thread! Love it!!!

That's a common fear many of us have, I think. But at one week post-op, I was still on a full-liquid diet. There's not a lot of restriction with liquids, so it's easy to feel like you're "eating" more than you should be able to, if that makes sense.

Crap! I was trying to quote this to continue a train of thought and accidentally erased it! Derp! Ok, lemme see if I can recreate it. Sorry, it is harsh. It is a harsh truth.
You should see your surgeon about alternatives. Maybe this is the wrong surgery for you? Maybe you need a Phase II = DS which has malabsorption involved with it? Also, get your RD on board to help you with a plan and if you aren't getting help already, ask your surgeon for a consult to a bariatric therapist--one who can help you understand your relationships and how they affect your eating.
Surgery is a tool. It isn't magical. Too many try to let the surgery do all the work. But it's not a tool with it's own engine. It's passive unless you apply repetitive force/action to it all the time with each bite/meal. Just like a hammer, it will just sit there like a rock unless you pick it up and actively use it correctly to drive a nail home.
You HAVE to want to actively change and give up old ineffective behaviors and relationships with food. You have to be ready to break up with comfort food and crap for at least 90-95% of your daily diet--every day--world without end--amen.
    Are you ready for that?

Results will vary, regardless of which surgery a person has had. It's not just the surgery itself that is a factor. BMI plays a part, as well as genetics, age, plus a number of other factors. At my 6-month checkup, I'd lost a total of 110 pounds. I was told that, by 6-months, they expect patients to have lost 50% of their excess body weight. Which I'd accomplished. At 9-months post-op, I'm still losing weight. I've lost 67% of my excess body weight, according to my surgeon's nurse practitioner. But that was 17 pounds ago. I don't regret choosing the sleeve, if that helps.

I couldn’t eat much once I advanced to the soft food stage. A couple tablespoons and I was full. I’m 9-months post-op, and right now, I can eat between 3-4 ounces of food, depending upon whatever it is I’m eating at the time. Never more than 4 ounces, and I’m always full afterward.

I'd been leaning toward getting the sleeve. I'd done a lot of research and figured it was the best option for me. I wasn't opposed to having the bypass, I just wasn’t too keen on the idea of having my intestines rerouted. Plus, I wanted to avoid issues with malabsorption and dumping syndrome. However, when I had my consultation, I was told my BMI was too high for the doctor to even consider doing the bypass on me. I did manage to lose enough weight during the 6-month medically supervised diet requirement to qualify for the bypass, but I still chose to move forward with the sleeve.
