Ok, so I can't figure out if I should go to the ER or suck it up til morning and call my surgeon. I am pretty sure I wolfed down some chicken without chewing thoroughly and it has been 2.5 hours. I can't keep liquids down, I'm in so much pain, and keep spitting up foam. What should I do to get through the night? Things are not getting better!

Thank you all for your advice! As I was hemming and hawing about going to the ER, and after 4 hours of agonizing pain and frothy spit, I suddenly felt way better as the food worked its way out! Ugh. What an awful experience! Do you think I stretched out my anastomosis permanently? Or should I be fine? I really need to remember to chew, chew, chew, and maybe avoid chicken unless it's ground!!

I spent 2 nights in the hospital and went home late in the afternoon on the 3rd day. I had to be able to sip a certain amount of liquid to get released.

    Volume is king.
In the early days when you are only eating an ounce or two at a time, then you fill that meal volume with lean dense Protein only. It gives the most satiety for the least carbs and fat.
Then later as you progress and you are able to eat more like 1 cup of food, you can fill your cup with 3oz of protein per meal and have a little room left over for veg and a bit of fat.
And pretty much, during the losing phase, if you do that--you will lose all the weight you need to lose very swiftly. Later on you can stress about adding carbs to your life.
Carbs (other than veg) are added to a meal at the very very last. And if it were me and it is...lol. I add veggie carbs first, then nut/avocado/olive carbs next, then berry and yogurt carbs next. There is rarely any room for shenanigan carbs. And I keep chips and crackers far far away cuz they are my crack.
You daily protein goal for a woman is somewhere between 60-80g per day depending on many factors. That's non-negotiable.
    The 3-4 non-negotiables are:
    Fluids
    Vitamins
    Daily Protein Goals
    Exercise (ie walking)

Oh, my goodness! For every horror story there are hundreds of success stories! I had gastric bypass on March 27th 2019, and it was the best decision I've ever made. Sure, there are ups and downs, but I've lost more weight than I could have on my own, my diabetes is GONE, I'm off all high blood pressure medication, I can go up and down stairs again, etc!! Please take a deep breath and be positive. You got this!

I chose bypass, and I'm very happy with that choice. Complications can happen with either surgery. I only wanted to do this once, and chose bypass because I thought it gave me, personally, the best shot at success. There are tons of very successful sleevers, though. Ultimately go with your gut! (Pun intended!)

Thanks, all! I do track everything I put in my mouth. Nutritionist recently told me to up my calories from 800 to at least 1000, and that certainly didn't help me to get out of this stall.!! Work out with a trainer 2 times a week, walk every day. I guess I need to drop my calories back down to no more than 800 and increase my exercise and see if that helps. Just frustrated!

Yeah. I had never heard of ulcers and strictures either, until I developed them just 3 weeks post RNY. I know they are rare, though. You and I are rare birds!!

Ok, so I can dish out advice, but can't seem to take my own advice as related to my current stall of one month. I try eating less, eating more, exercising, etc. And I can't break this stall. I feel like a failure!
How long have you stalled for, and how did you break the stall? I can't be in maintenance yet! Help. I need some hand-holding to mentallt fet thru this!

    Ok, so reality check time.
You are 143lbs and 5'3". You could be built like a brick sh*thouse. And you still are NOT in danger of being dangerously underweight. You are at the VERY high end of normal. So take a deep breath. And don't stress.
Here's the standard chart. But you may not be built standard.

Now that we're all breathing and know there isn't any reason for anxiety...congrats! That was a very FAST trip. Your PCP is an alarmist--so is your surgeon. Average weight loss per week is 2-4lbs. Yes, it does usually slow down. But you are building muscle and tearing it down at a very fast pace. Your strength training builds muscle and your biking tears it off of you.
Now...more reality...with the amount of exercise you do, I've no idea how you live on only 700cals/day. I don't care if that's weight loss or some kind of monkey butt magical maintenance. You need more calories.
You have 3 macros and only 3 macros to choose from:
Protein - no one needs (or few need) 120+ grams of protein per day unless you are in that 1% of 1% elite athlete zone.
Carbs - you probably are metabolically flexible at this point, and could handle 50-100g per day. But I understand fearing the carb monster. It is real! And carbs (non-veggie sources) are a slippery slope trigger for many.
Fats - here is where a major source of calories reside. Some of us can't do super high fat meals. We get nauseated. But when you suppress your carbs, the % of fat naturally goes up relative to everything else. It doesn't mean you're eating gobs of fat. You could probably easily up your fats to become 65-75% of your diet. (AKA keto). Healthy fats and easy sources for fat:
    avocado
    olives
    nuts
    nut butters
    olive oil
    butter
    coconut oil
    palm kernel oil
    lard, tallow
    Omega 3 oils
These foods have the smallest volume footprint but pack in the calories and are nutritionally dense.
I would personally start by upping your calorie load by 200 cals per day. You can pretty quickly get up to 1400-1600 cals and then stop and see where you are. You may continue to lose quickly. Your metabolism is amped up. But for most of us, we start slowing down in the last 20 lbs. And at 5'3" and 120lbs, you would STILL only be smack in the middle of normal and healthy. So technically you "aren't on your last 20lbs".
    Congrats. You are a beast!

I've posted in the past about my experience with venlafaxine post RNY. I stopped absorbing it, and had to taper off while adding liquid prozac. Malabsorption of psych meds is one reason why my psychiatrist did not want me to do the surgery! I'm doing ok now, about 2 weeks post venlafaxine. Good luck on your journey.

Wait, what? You're only drinking 50 mls of Water a day? I would say 2000 ml is a conservative minimum. Maybe I misunderstood your post. I don't think you're necessarily doing anything wrong except you need more water. Just keep working the program and keep your eyes on the prize. Everyone goes through stalls, and I mean everyone!.

Are you meeting with your GP? Mine actually mentioned the surgery to me before I had considered it. Do you need approval from your GP, or just from a bariatric surgeon? I would just be brutally honest, tell her that you've tried diets in the past that have failed, that you're sick and tired of being sick and tired, and are looking to better your future! I'm pretty sure she'll be supportive. If by some chance she does say, no, and you need her opinion, I'd find myself a GP who was on board with the whole thing. Good luck, and please keep us posted!

Hi, and welcome! I'm not from Oregon, but have had gastric bypass in March 2019, and had hypertension, diabetes, type 2, arthritis in knees, generally felt lousy everywhere.
Now, I'm off my diabetes meds and it's gone! Off my high blood pressure meds! Knees don't hurt, and generally feel great! Best decision I ever made health wise. I had a BMI of over 40, and now I'm in the "overweight" category, on my way to normal.
Read everything you can, and ask questions. Good luck with your journey!

I, too, chose Bypass because of GERD, and I'm glad I did. Taking the Vitamins is no big deal. I take a chewable multi Vitamin in the am and pm, 3 chewable calcium citrate chews a day, and a vitamin B-12 under my tongue. Easy peasy. Not something to prevent me from having bypass!! Yes, the surgery may be "more complicated" but it is called the "gold standard" for a reason, and has been done for a long time.
    Good luck!
