Italia904 got a reaction from Frustr8 in UF Gainesville,FL. - Anyone go here? And see Dr. Freidman?
Hello. You have to have a referral from your pcp. I have been trying to loose weight for 7 years. But my diabetes and hypo thyroid has gotten in the way. Plus I also have high cholesterol. I had to show proof that I was under a doctor care for six months and going to a gym and signed off by doctor. My process has moved pretty fast. I have stay well. Who do you have for your insurance?

Sorry but I need to vent today!! I was at the doctor's for my 6 month post op visit. Since surgery I have lost a total of 90 pounds. That is 90 pounds of hard work!!! Prior to seeing the doctor, I met with his assistant and a dr in training. As I was discussing progress, etc with the assistant, he turned to the dr in training and made a comment that "she JUST had the sleeve" done. Of course I asked what was meant by that comment. He quickly replied that if I would have had a bypass I would have lost more weight. Really!!! I went through all the pre op crap -- including liquid diet that a bypass patient would do. I went through surgery and spent two days in the hospital. I have totally changed the way I am living and I HAVE LOST 90 POUNDS in 6 months. Not a happy camper that I was told that I "just had the sleeve" done. I was a part of the decision as to what type of surgery I did and I do not regret my decision about the sleeve. It is working for me. Very frustrated with the comment. At least the surgeon was far more positive and supportive!! He told me that he was proud of me. Thanks for letting me vent!! Such a frustrating situation today.

    Hello,
Does Any one go to Gainesville, FL. UF Shands - Surgeon is Dr. Friedman? I go there and trying to have the sleeve. He suggested the bypass but I was too scared to do that procedure. I go Wednesday to have my barium swallow and ekg. I am hoping to have surgery in May. Is anyone else see this doctor or getting surgery in May? I live in Jacksonville but I have to go to Gainesville to have the surgery.

There will be no remarkable differences between sleeve and bypass. Just personal preferences. Advice from dozens of different doctors who have absolutely no consensus. LOL:)
Bypass folks will have a harder time with refined sugar...but both camps should avoid refined sugar.
At 3 months, I ate 1000-1200 calories per day.
I got 60+ grams of Protein per day.
Kept my meats low fat, use olive oil, etc.
My carbs were not refined, but I do eat carbs. Whole grain breads, Beans, protein Pasta.
I follow the mayo Clinic diet....which is kinda like the Mediterranean Diet. Lots of whole grains, veggies, fruits, beans, nuts, fish. Some meat.
1200 calories looks like whatever you want it to look like.
Many people will eat significantly lower calorie amounts. My group does not advise to do this based on long term studies of weight regain. We are pushed to get to 1000-1200 calories as soon as possible...the idea being a strong metabolic reset. (this is all emerging information and emerging theory....so time will tell)

I had RNY 6 months ago. At 3 months, I was drinking a small Protein Shake (6oz was all I could handle) in the morning, having a scrambled egg or tuna for lunch, an early dinner of chicken in any kind of sauce with a small amount of vegetable and another small Protein shake or 1/2 c. of greek yogurt later in the evening. By this time it was easier to get in 65 oz of Water.

Both surgeries require a Vitamin regimen for life.
Only 30-50 percent of people are estimated to develop dumping syndrome after bypass.
Both surgeries require adherence to a diet that normally focuses on meals high in Protein and discourages frequent grazing and snacking.
We can’t predict your weight loss or your compliance with a post operative program.
Bypass is known to basically “cure” type 2 diabetes that is caused by obesity, likely a main factor your surgeon is recommending this for you. You ultimately need to make this decision for yourself on what is right for your body but certainly his input should be greatly factored in if the reasons seem valid. You should do some independent research on both surgeries it seems like before you decide.
    Good luck.
