Gundy got a reaction from GreenTealael in Confessional - Lets post our cheats/confessions/etc so others can see that we are all human
Aaahhhhh, Matt! I’m embarrassed. Your small cheats make mine look like epic fails of character! Hahahaha

Let’s start with the 2/3 box of Cheez-Its yesterday afternoon. I had planned to have a small afternoon snack of 14 small calories, 75 calories. Not so fast, Blondie! How did 2/3 of a box simply disappear into thin air? I had anticipated that my constriction would stop me, but not with slider foods like crackers and chips. Alas, no more sliders for this gal.

On the pre-op diet, I would gag on Protein Shakes so I simply went full Protein with no carbs. Yes, this was cheating according to my doctor, but I still lost weight and my liver was perfect for surgery.

There have been numerous cheats along the way. After surgery, I felt nauseous for quite sometime. The culprit was Wellbutrin. After going off Wellbutrin, the nausea has disappeared. Due to the nausea, I advanced to real food sooner than the suggested diet after surgery. Granted, it was mostly Wendy’s chili, but that would be technically cheating.

Carbonated beverages are another cheat. I never drink any carbonated beverages with calories, however. I love diet, caffeine-free Mountain Dew. In fact, it was one of the few fluids I could stomach initially, drinking it flat for the first 6 weeks.

Given all the above admissions, I am happy with my slow but sure progress. I’m working hard to get my 60 grams of protein, 64 ounces of fluids, follow the 30/30 rule and making good choices.

Perhaps it was meant as eating a minimum of one hour after waking instead of immediately after waking to promote hydration first. Def check with NUT for clarity.I ALWAYS wake and hydrate despite hunger even before wls, I can't remember the reasons but my mother instilled this in us.
Something about needing Water more than food (old world stuff)
I wake and drink Water, tea coffee, shake, whatever else then wait a min of 30 mins and move on to breakfast. No rush I sometimes drink multiple things slowly and breakfast is at 11am. I let my body guide me.

Confessions! They make my catholic schoolgirl heart flutter. Anyway, ten days into the two week liquid diet I screech into the Burger King parking lot like the getaway driver in a bank robbery. Order a small onion ring (sans sauce-I'm health conscience like that) and woof them down. As I'm licking my fingers I think how guilty I should feel and I should probably cry or something but I couldn't squeeze out a single tear. Funny thing is, I don't even like Burger King and there were way better options across the street but I couldn't be bothered to do a U turn.

I definitely cheated pre-op... post op I don't consider what I'm eating as cheat meals. I stay within my calorie limit and eat very little of it. I LOVE fries so I might pick at them here and there, I've had chips but never a whole bag like before. I can't drink pop, the carbonation hurts my stomach. Otherwise I'd love a glass! Probably a good thing tho. lol I'm down 78lbs in 3.5 months.

    Greetings!

This is just a slight dilemma which can easily be solved, but I wanted to see how you handle your mornings.

The NUT told me to eat one hour after you wake. In addition, we all follow the 30/30 rule. Also, we are all told to get 64 ounces of fluids per day which has been a challenge for me. As such, my morning Decaf with almond milk has been a life saver and really has helped me to reach the 64 ounces of fluids each day.

Ideally, I would love to start with a few cups of decaf coffee with almond milk. Unfortunately, I don’t gulp the coffee so it may take 45 minutes to drink the coffee, enjoying every minute of it! After waiting 30 minutes after drinking before eating, leaves me past the one hour limit on eating Breakfast.

How do you handle all the rules for the morning? If have to forego one rule, would it be to ‘eat breakfast one hour after waking’?

    OMG, so many ...
I rushed through my stages and ate real food starting week 3. Week 3 I was at a work event and I drank, all week, and I ate everything but fibrous veggies. No ill effects at all, I have never looked back.
I had no preop diet, except liquids only the day before surgery. I had a burger that morning. I was taking magnisium citrate to clear me out that afternoon, I figured it would get flushed out (and it did!)
I drink diet soda almost everyday. I just can't do Water, or crystal light, etc., I can never get close to 64 oz without it. I drink fountain only, so not a lot of carbonation.
I just don't believe in the we must have 64 oz of water every day or it is some terrible bad thing. It is honestly so uniquely American. Europeans say they can tell American tourists by the bottle of water they always have with them. Presurgery, there were days I probably consumed 16 oz of liquid total, to no ill effect.
So, that's a lot of bad stuff. My surgeon's PA grudgingly signed off on the diet soda. I also have a good friend who's a GI, and he's a lot easier to have real conversations with (vs. my surgeon), and he signed off on all of the above, as long as I promised to stop if I had any issues at all.

I tired pretty much my whole life to lose weight. I’ve done every diet out there. Everything worked for a while then I would slip back and gain everything back plus some. With the VSG, the year after surgery I was able to relearn how to eat, how to look and think about food. I think the biggest thing for me is that even 2 years out I rarely (and I mean rarely, maybe once a month) feel hungry. Hunger is what always sabotaged me. It’s changed my life so much!

A small experiment today that truly underscores the danger of slider foods!

Two and a half months post op and at this stage, I’m able to eat 1/3 to 1/2 of a cup of food at meal time. If I eat more, I get hiccups, start burping and feel uncomfortable. In need of an afternoon snack as I walked past the cracker aisle at the grocery store, I grabbed a box of Cheez-Its. Of course, I planned to eat half a serving at 75 calories or 14 small crackers. What a mistake! By the time I got home half the box was gone, and I didn’t feel that constricted or uncomfortable.

After seeing how much I ate of the box of crackers, I vowed to never open another box of crackers or bag of chips!

Please fill me in on your mistakes so I can avoid them in advance!

We all know about the warnings. Most folks who have actually researched it know that most of the warnings...stretching, etc.... are kinda....lacking....in facts and evidence.
A lot of people do have the occasional carbonated beverage. The world will probably not end.
I think the big taboo around them with doctors and nutritionists has more to do with the fact that they are empty calories and habit forming. They're just not generally a good choice. Sugary pop, beer, wine coolers.....tons of calories, and little nutrition. Bad habits.
But no...doctors have actually looked at the sleeve diameter of people who have been wildly successful and who have failed terribly...a year or two out.....and there's really no difference. Even if they've been drinking soda. The difference is new dietary habits and new exercise habits.
What destroys people's efforts isn't the carbonation.....it's the sugar and calories. Carbonated beverages are a gateway to screwing up your diet, rebound hunger, and a return to old habits.

I'm not negative, I'm experienced to say that I can see the warning signs of someone who may not be ready. I hope you do gain as much knowledge and info as possible to make the right decision. But as other poster's have pointed out, its a life long commitment. You have to be willing to make the most of it. It's 80% mind and 20% body. You can easily cheat yourself out of being successful, its not fool proof. I'd rather see you make this decision, when you are ready, and will make the most of this journey. I recommend surgery to nearly everyone who is sure they are ready to make a change. I'm not saying you won't get there, but your concerns are concerning.

I'm at the point where all my clothes have become so big and baggy I can no longer pull them off and look professional. I've been moving down sizes in slacks and jeans, but held off on shirts and dresses.
I found two dresses that I absolutely love, and look f*cking amazing on me, in my not so humble opinion.
Oh and they are size 12!
