  1. If you count pre-op along with my 4 days post-op I’ve lost an air conditioner! [emoji50] HW: 311 SW: 255 VSG CW: 252 First goal weight: 191 lbs Second goal weight: 159 lbs Goal weight: 142 lbs 5’6” 34 yo female in NC
  2. This! This is it EXACTLY!!! I’m definitely hungry with tummy rumbling but once I eat a little I’m good for about an hour. I’m upping the protein every day. So far today I’ve gotten in 43g. 415 calories so far. My NUT and surgeon want us up to 800 calories and 75-90g protein during phase 1-2. So I’m doing really well. I’ll wait to see until tomorrow. 3. I’ve never heard of this, so thank you for the information. I’m going to ask my doctor if I can start a little of the full liquid diet when I see him tomorrow morning. Maybe the applesauce or pudding. HW: 311 SW: 255 VSG CW: 252 First goal weight: 191 lbs Second goal weight: 159 lbs Goal weight: 142 lbs 5’6” 34 yo female in NC
  4. I didn’t get or need any pain meds after surgery. I just took Tylenol when needed. I was 3 days out yesterday and didn’t even take those. HW: 311 SW: 255 VSG CW: 252 First goal weight: 191 lbs Second goal weight: 159 lbs Goal weight: 142 lbs 5’6” 34 yo female in NC
  5. This was my first surgery ever too! The thing that I worried about the most was the anesthesia. But once I got through the EGD anesthesia just fine, I had zero nerves. You’re going to be great. And you can always ask me anything. Which procedure are you having? HW: 311 SW: 255 CW: 254 First goal weight: 191 lbs Second goal weight: 159 lbs Goal weight: 142 lbs 5’6” 34 yo female in NC
  6. VSG done5/10/18. 4 days out and I’m hungry. No, it’s not head hunger. I’m getting my fluids and protein. I do have to eat slowly, but it’s not a problem for me to finish off 10oz of broth in 30 minutes. I didn’t have problems with fluids from the moment I woke up and I was walking within an hour of being moved from recovery to my room. My plan says to increase calories and protein by 100/10g per day until I hit 800 calories and 75-90g of protein. On day three I had 400 calories and 40 protein. I see my surgeon on Tuesday morning and plan to ask about this, but in the meantime, is it normal to be hungry so soon? I just see that most people struggle with fluid, protein, nausea, pain ect when I had basically none of that. I do have to eat slowly or I get that lovely chest pain and I do feel full on small amounts, but I’m hungry within an hour. Am I weird? Should I worry? Any input would be great! Thanks as always you lovely people! HW: 311 SW: 255 CW: 254 First goal weight: 191 lbs Second goal weight: 159 lbs Goal weight: 142 lbs 5’6” 34 yo female in NC

  8. You’re going to do amazing! I promise! I had my sleeve done on 5/10 and I’m feeling pretty darn good. If you want to read a little of my story from surgery day to now, you can check out the “I got sleeved today” post on this same section. I’m excited for you! 9. Mine are healing up really quickly. I plan on using arnica cream on them once they’re completely sealed and the steristrips have fallen off. Plastic surgeons use it to combat bruising and scaring. But honestly? I look at them each day, and smile. They are a badge, you are right. And I am proud of mine. Do you have a date for yourself yet? 10. Don’t be too worried. I also scar so very easily. But I’ll definitely take 4 little scars than a shorter lifespan! Just realize that the first days will probably suck in one way or another. Like I said, the gas was the worst for me. I was lucky and had zero nausea. I was told I woke up immediately when they stopped running the anesthesia which they were surprised by. I remember two things from the moment I was rolling out of the surgery to the recovery. 1. I said “I’m going to throw up!” and the nice anesthesia nurse said “No you’re not.” and gave me something in my IV. Nausea gone, never to return. Then she asked me to rate my pain on a 1-10 scale. I said 7? And then I took a breath and the worst pain I’ve ever felt stabbed me from inside the left side of my tummy. I started to cry. She immediately ran 2 doses of Demerol and had me roll onto my right side. Bam! Pain gone. I’ve always been very stoic and had a very high pain tolerance. I fell down 8 wooden porch stairs and a portion of my upper cheek was sliced open. I shattered my nose, orbital socket, cheek bone, had a concussion ect. I never even cried. So, I figured I don’t want to say I have a 10 pain scale when I figured that’s reserved for like amputation or something. That was my mistake. Don’t be afraid to say your pain is high. The second bout of pain was around 7 pm the night of surgery. It was sudden with no explanation. I just immediately curled into a ball and my eyes watered. Fortunately my mom was there and called the nurses in a second. She knows that pain never really bothers me and that to be acting like that things were bad. They gave 5mg of OxyContin. During the night I had a dose of Roxicet as well. And that was it. But, I. WALKED. ALL. NIGHT. I mean all night. I got about 90 minutes of sleep during my 24 hours in the hospital. And I peed all night long too. They gave us 3 IV’s over 24 hours. 2 just fluids and 1 vitamin bag. I made sure that at dinner I got in 4 oz of broth and 2 oz of unsweetened tea. They also gave me a constant supply of ice water and 2 small cups of SF jello at both meals. I would save the jello and take tiny bites in between each 2-3 laps of the floor. At the meeting of WLS patients prior to release, I was far and away the one who looked and felt the best. I was the last surgery of the day, but the first to be released. So my advice is to accept that there’s going to be pain, and do your best to just soldier through it. Get up and walk walk walk. I’m 3 days out now, and I walk a little further each night. Today I was able to walk the dog for 30 minutes and wasn’t even tired. I swear the dog is in worse shape than I am! [emoji23] I do sleep a lot, and I’m in no way getting 64 oz of fluid, but I did get almost 400 calories and 37g of protein in today. Water is actually the most difficult thing for me to get down. I take 750 mg of Tylenol twice a day and that it. I don’t have to crush my pills or anything else. The only pain I have now is incision pain. Tylenol takes care of that. My first day home I did get my first case of the slimes and foamies. Now I know how to keep that from happening. I still take gas x twice a day. I’m way less bloated and swollen already and I started losing weight today. All in all, it’s been pretty great. But when you get out of surgery and it hurts like the devil, just remind yourself that the pain in so very temporary and you won’t even remember how severe it really was a few days later. I know everyone has different experiences, but I thought I’d share more of mine with you. My only complaint is that I still can’t get into and out of my bed. But luckily we have a sun room with a reclining couch and large tv so I’m able to stay comfortable all the time. It has a door that I hung a sheet on to get privacy from the rest of the house, so I’m not bothered by others. And yes, I have a hair trigger temper. I get crabby in .6 seconds flat. But since the nurse coordinator told my parents about that happening for at least a month, they were prepared and have done well ignoring me when it happens. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me. I’m an open book so nothing is off limits. Good luck on your journey! 12. Had VSG on 5/10/18. No problem drinking broth a whole protein shake (all over like 90 minuets of course). Popsicles are great. Still haven’t tried jello. But water? No matter how small of sips I take, it feels like it gets stuck. Did anyone else have issues with the water part right after surgery? 13. Just wondering if anyone had any ideas about how to add some flavor or something to the broth part of the diet. I’ve got 7 more days to go and the beef, veg and chicken broth on repeat are getting boring fast! Any of you wonderful people have any ideas on how to make them taste a little more... anything? 16. I got a little hungry today, but I realize it was head hunger trying to raise its head again. But I did feel hungry before getting the broth. 3 baby spoons later and it becomes a task because I’m no longer hungry but I know I need to get that fluid in. 18. I did indeed get home safely! And glad to be here. I didn’t even request pain meds to take home. Only the 4 incisions are sore and Tylenol managed that well. My belly is still a little pokey out, but I’m back to my SW as of this morning. I’m doing well getting liquids in so far. Takes hours to do it and I’m nowhere near the 64oz mark, but I’ve already had an 8oz protein shake and am now working on 8 oz of broth. I have had ZERO nausea which was a great surprise! I took off the scop patch last night because it was making me itchy and I was getting seriously dry eyes. I’m stiff, but not in much pain. I haven’t even taken Tylenol yet today. I will in a bit because as the time has passed and I’ve moved more, those incisions are starting to nag. Once I get this broth down I’ll have a nap and when it’s cooler out tonight I’ll go on my first little outdoor walk. So far so good! 21. I had VSG on 5/10 and I’m at the same weight I was at my surgery 2 days ago. I haven’t had any nausea at all and I only take Tylenol for incision pain. I’m a little worried that everything has been so easy. I was able to lay on my sides immediately after surgery. I did have terrible gas pain the first 36 hours after surgery, but since I walked the halls the entire day and night the day I was in the hospital, it wasn’t very bad once I got home. Yesterday afternoon and evening I took a couple doses of gas x and now I feel great minus the incisions. I’ve never had surgery before, so can I assume that the fact I’m the same weight after 2 days is because of the 3 IV’s I got? Just worried because I was easily able to keep down 3 one cup servings of chicken broth yesterday. Just looking for advice to settle my nerves and reassure myself that this sleeve is actually going to start working soon. Thanks for any responses HW: 311 CW: 255 SW: 255 First goal weight: 191 lbs Second goal weight: 159 lbs Goal weight: 142 lbs 5’6” 34 yo female in NC
  22. That’s awesome! I’ve been able to get in 33.8 oz water and 24 oz of broth in today. No nausea or vomiting and the severe pain quit around 9 this morning. Just the intestinal gas pain and suture tenderness. Are you still feeling good? HW: 311 CW: 255 SW: 255 First goal weight: 191 lbs Second goal weight: 159 lbs Goal weight: 142 lbs 5’6” 34 yo female in NC
  23. Oh my gosh yes about the pain! Now it’s only some intestinal gas and tenderness at the 4 sutures so extra strength Tylenol is doing the job well. I walked ALL DAMN NIGHT last night. I know that hospital and patient room buildings like the back of my hand now! [emoji23]Are you feeling better now? 25. Ok. So I had the sleeve done yesterday here in NC, and your process sounds a lot like mine. After my year of NUT visits, I had to have another preconsult with my surgeon, do a pre-op meeting and all new lab tests. Typically you cannot set up your surgery until your prior authorization for surgery has gone thru. Since my surgeon deals with the same couple insurance policies, they knew exactly how long it would take to get my approval in. The day of my last pre-surgery appt with the surgeon, the penciled me in for my surgery date 17 days later. Exactly 2 weeks before my scheduled surgery, my approval came in and I was immediately put on the Optifast diet. After that, I did all the meetings, tests, pre-op hospital paperwork etc. 13 days later I was in the OR, the next day (today) I was able to pass all discharge instructions and tests, and now I’m back at home, no pain meds or anything needed. I guess to shorten it down, no you can’t be officially scheduled until you’re approved, but you surgeon may be able to pencil in a date for you and if all goes well and on time, you’ll have no problem keeping that date. Hope this helps with some of your questions. I can’t help with the switch or RNY info since the best and safest option for me was the sleeve. If you want more information regarding those two options, you should jump on the boards for the RNY and then the switch one as well and ask those people questions. Most everyone here is very kind and helpful and will answer any questions you may have. Good luck!
