My name is Anne. This is my first post. I started this journey June 15, 2017. My surgeon scheduled my surgery on November 4th for December 5, 2017. He will be doing a hiatal hernia repair and a hernia repair in my belly button also. I am really excited and nervous at the same time. Starting my liver shrinking diet on November 21, 2017.

From what I was told, your regular meds will resume the following morning after your leak test is done. I am unable to take any of my routine meds. o.o. You may want to confirm that with your doctor.

Well my snag is I am raising 10yr old and 7yr old granddaughters - so I have to add some starch in there. My plan is to just add a noodle dish or something for them. We already grill a lot, all winter even. And these girls will eat real food, prefer real food - fish, vegetables, salads, fruit, Coq au vin, venison chili, etc. Of course they will eat brats, burgers, tacos, spaghetti, too!!!
My goal is to lose 60 - 65 pounds from today - 200.5. I hope to just concentrate on the Protein and a few bites of vegetables as well. I really only go all out at holidays with the pie thing, and whole t-giving dinner. Christmas is prime rib, asparagus, salad, wild rice dish - but if I can't tolerate the beef I will make a chicken thigh or something w asparagus.

Do you still like to cook and interact with food now that you are either on the other side, or are seriously knuckling down to your pre-surgery diets? Do you try new recipes and like/love cooking still (if you ever did)? Or do you seek to just "getterdone", you know, get in, get out, get on with your life? Gimme the straight skinny on how and what/why you put food down your pie hole now that you're gellin' like fellon!
    Inquiring minds and all...

When you go for medical clearance the doctor should tell you if you can take it. They told me I can take my cymbalta, Wellbutrin, and Prilosec

A cpap provide one consistent and continuous flow of air. One pressure the entire time.
a bipap provides two alternating but continuous flows of air. One pressure for inhalation another for exhaling.
From what I understand few people get a Bipap machine because it is for SEVERE apnea and very expensive for insurance companies. I had to do 2 separate studies to get approved for my bipap. My therapist pushed hard for it because according to him he wasn’t sure how I wasn’t dead yet since I stopped breathing on average every 2 minutes. My airway is also very very tiny so I guess I need the extra help. I’m one of those that my therapist thinks will never (regardless of weight) stop needing my machine.

I was recently diagnosed with sleep apnea. I'm having so much trouble with this machine also. It's not just the constant air blowing in my face, but the sound as well. It's not loud by any means, just a hum, but I've always needed complete silence and darkness to fall asleep.
The nurse told me that the doctor and especially the anesthesiologist would not perform the surgery if you haven't been wearing it for at least a month as you may be overly tired and it would complicate surgery. So, hopefully I can break this 49 year practice of mine!

If you have a smartphone, install one of the sleeping sounds apps or a white noise app. It really does work.

Is the mask fitting properly? It can't be too tight nor loose. If it's fine, I would suggest a smaller mask. The place where you got the appliance will be able to help you getting a different mask also. Until then you can cut up a t-shirt or something like that that's soft and line the silicone edges to reduce irritation. And, of course, make sure everything stays super clean.

I was started on CPAP 4 months before surgery. Switch from nasal pillow to nose mask due to air leaks. Mask fit better. Been out of surgery for almost 3 weeks and I see my pressures coming down. My pulmonologist thinks he might discontinue in in about 2 months. Hang in there it takes time to get used to it. BTW. My energy level never changed much.

I just received a CPAP machine about 2 months ago and it was a little rough at first. I felt like I was suffocating from the machine blowing air all the time and if you open your mouth all the air rushes out your mouth. But I have been using it for two months straight and I never realized how tired I was all the time and honestly I sleep so much better and I barely notice it. What setting did the respiratory therapist change the lowest setting to be? Mine is at a 4. How long have you been trying it for?

I am so so frustrated trying to use a CPAP machine for sleep apnea - I feel like Im suffocating and getting headaches - how its going to help me sleep through the night is beyond me.... I can't even fall asleep with that on my face with all that air blowing in my nose.... and why is it mandatory prior to surgery? The respiratory therapist changed the settings but Im still having trouble...Please tell me there's hope for me and my CPAP. Anyone here have any advice? If I can't use it, does that mean I can't have surgery?

I have a date of Dec. 18th. Excited but very nervous. Can't believe I'm going to do this- yet I've tried so many other things over the past several years. Worried about telling my family members (sisters, etc). because I think they won't want me to do it.
Does anyone know if you can take your regular medications the night you are in the hospital? I take daily preventative meds for Migraines.

No pain yet. They were putting pain meds in my IV every few hours. I'll let you know how I feel tomorrow after being home and the meds have worn off. Walking was a breeze. No passing gas yet either unless I did it in my sleep.

I'm Dec 27th, have already been sampling a lot of different stuff w/mixed results. Am on an extended pre-op diet, which for me is mostly about cutting things out a little at a time so I don't feel sick/get headaches, and adding things in slowly so I can get used to them. I used to drink various Protein Shakes in the 90's when I was a gym rat, and found a few that I liked. Now I have IBS and am finding a lot of the shakes and Vitamins don't agree with me. So that's not good.
I tried some of the Vitaleph products recommended by Drs. office, but they are expensive and not very palatable. I am saving those shakes for my 2 wk pre-op diet, which is the strictest phase. I got the Multi-Vitamin patch from BariatricPal Store, bc I have always hated the aftertaste of Multivites, but am not 100% sure how much gets absorbed (watched a series of youtube videos this one surgeon does on nutrition and he doesn't think Patches in general are absorbed well, which concerns me). So I have decided to save them for right after surgery and have just got Nature Made Fast Dissolve VitaMelts off Amazon. They got good reviews and were priced well. The taste is fine. I had a little stomach cramping after but am not sure if it was from those or my 1st experience with Premier Protein shakes premade.
I get a lot of stuff off Amazon bc I am a Prime member and get fast/free shipping on most items, so I've also tried an organic B-12 spray (tastes nice but don't notice any difference in energy), and a Vitamin D3 cream (feels nice on skin, not sure if it's helping increase levels or not though). I also have a melatonin cream for post-op when I won't be able to swallow my nightly melatonin.
I found one pre-made shake I really like: Orgain Organic Nutrition Shakes, Iced Cafe Mocha. It's like a nice cold Mocha Frappuccino in the morning, but with less sugar and more Protein. So far that's my favorite shake drink.
I got some other items off BariatricPal store that I haven't tried yet. I got a box of strawberry smoothie mix, grape juice mix, mixed berry juice mix, and cream of chicken Soup mix. All high protein of course. I plan to take some of these with me on the plane to surgery as they will travel well. I will sample before I leave and if they are good may order more for post op.
So that's my experience so far, hope it was somewhat helpful. I would love to hear about anything you've tried and liked/disliked, and from others as well. Have a great day and good luck with your surgery!
