    Surgery on Tuesday. Any suggestions?

A “power glide” is an IV put into your upper arm. It goes in to your triceps area. They use an injector & ultrasound to put it in correctly. They big trade off is: it’s much longer than a standard IV cannula. It’s definitely scary to look at, but it doesn’t hurt any more than a regular IV. If your veins are hard to work with when you are dehydrated, like mine, then this is the best option to go with.

    Surgery on Tuesday. Any suggestions?

If you have a struggle getting IVs after not having fluids for a while ask for a “power glide”. I wish i knew that up front. They tired twice to get a line in & on the third time told me about a power glide. The got the power glide done in one try. Be ready to roll with the punches. I had some blood in my lower GI after my surgery. I felt perfectly fine, but I spent an extra week crapping pure blood. Which leads me to: leave your shame, self-consciousness, & embarrassment at home. You are going to be farting, possibly catheterized (I wasn’t), & mostly half naked the entire time you are in the hospital. its all worth it in the long run. I’m a T1D & had my RNY on 11/20. I’ve lost 40lbs (even with a two week weight stall) plus my diabetes is in the best shape it’s ever been!
  3. I showered the following day in the hospital
  4. I stalled out 4 weeks out after my surgery. At that point I was stuck after losing 30lbs. I’m getting over now using this tips: 1. Definitely take your vitamins & meds! 2. If you are able to go to the gym, then go to the gym even if it’s just for simple & short cardio. 3. Try switching things up in your diet. Have a day or so where you aren’t as focused on protein, but still avoid carbs. 4. Try a natural over the counter metabolism booster like capsaicin or cinnamon if your stomach can handle it. It may be just a placebo effect, but still worth a shot. 5. Don’t worry about stalling! The stress isn’t going to help you lose weight. Only get concerned if it been a while or you don’t feel well.
  5. I was honestly surprised at how fast & how drastically my insulin usage changed after surgery. The usage reduction was my major driving factor to get the surgery & yet I am STILL in shock at the changes for the better that I under went.
  6. I had my RNY done over a month ago. I’m a T1D (type 1 diabetic) on an insulin pump & prior to surgery started to experience T2 insulin resistance. 3 days after surgery, I had to cut my basal rate by more than half! I went from 83units a day (without corrections for food & blood sugars) to 36units a day. My a1c prior to surgery was 7.6 (prior to surgery this was the best a1c I’ve ever had) to 5.8 (which is now the best a1c I’ve ever had in my 26 years as a T1D). Getting this surgery was easily the best decision I’ve made for my health since getting an insulin pump 16 years ago.
