ItsJustMeToo reacted to healthy and fit @ 60 in Beginning BMI 35 or under
I am at BMI of 35 or 207lbs at 5'5". My highest weight was 218. I am just finishing up my 6 month prerequisites. Hoping for surgery in January. I have not told very many people. Everyone has their own opinions and I really don't care what they think. I am almost 60 and have been battling my weight since I was 30. Do it for yourself. Keep it to yourself. I am having gastric bypass done due to GERD. I am also a diabetic, hypertension, sleep apnea, joint pain, back pain. I am retiring from Nursing in 2 years and I want to enjoy my new life. We plan to travel. I want to hike and bike and not huff and puff! Best of luck to you!

I had my surgery with them on January 6th with Dr. Sakata. They were wonderful and I wholeheartedly recommend them.
The people were caring (almost if not all of them that work there have had the surgery, so they understand the nerves and everything and can sympathize), and when I had a few complications from my gallbladder, they helped me take care of it and took it out as well (a month after my sleeve).

I had surgery at Blossom on March 12. I am currently 24lbs lost at 38 days post op. All I can say is, that place is amazing! My sister is a healthcare worker and went with me. She was so impressed with every single thing they did. After surgery there is a fb group that you can join that is just for blossom patients for support and access to blossom employee help. Worth every penny and flying for. From the hotel, to the drivers, surgery staff, etc. 100% perfect with zero complaints. I haven’t met anyone yet that was unhappy with them.

Sorry it makes you uncomfortable to read about an issue I was concerned about. I figured it sounded better and than using the words squirt or gush odor. I wanted to see if anyone else probably had this issue that embarrassed me when it happened. There was jo warning in the reading materials we were given before surgery.

My gut says that an unhappy marriage and/or the feelings of renewal having left (or planning to leave) an unhappy marriage can be part of the decision to have surgery. Not that having had surgery creates a wedge in the marriage, but that surgery becomes part of the rebirth in the aftermath of an unhappy marriage.

For what it's worth my husband is loving the confidence and boost in physical well being and ability that surgery has afforded me.

I think, as with anything, different doctors will have different protocol and frankly, sometimes their protocol isn't the only way, or the best course of action. Pretty much everyone I know with a chronic illness is reading about and joining support groups for their condition, and often they're the ones coming to their doctor with suggestions, alternative protocol, etc. WLS is no different. We share and seek guidance from others who are going through the same thing, because we want to make informed decisions or simply because we need the support.

I haven't told anyone except my husband and it's been a complete non-issue. My coworkers sometimes tease about how little I eat, but I work with all men, and they're big guys. They know I'm trying to lose weight, trying to be careful about what I eat, and that I'm physically way tinier than they are (even before surgery). I don't let their teasing bother me.
I do think twice when ordering at restaurants. The portions are HUGE and it does end up seeming like I didn't like my food or just picked at my food. When my husband is with me, we'll share his meal and I'll get a Soup or side salad. Friends/family who eat with us just think we're being cute, it doesn't occur to them that I've consumed a considerably small amount of food. When I'm by myself, I'll look for something that seems like it will be on the smaller/lighter side. I avoid things like salads because I can't eat to make even a dent in the salad, lol. I'll usually do something like a single taco plate, or a small Protein (chicken) with side veggies, etc.

My husband is the only one that knows. People are judgey about WLS in general, but low BMIers get extra levels of judgement. No thanks. I know it's not popular around here, but I figure it's no one's business and there's literally no reason to share with others. My husband came along for all my pre surgery stuff and he (and this message board) were all the support I needed.

I'd have the surgery and tell him that he needs to do whatever he needs to do. He doesn't sound like a great person, and once you get yourself where you want to be, you can likely do better.
Don't let him bully you. Do what is best for your health, your goals, and your happiness.

I had a lap band placed 11 years ago (and removed 2 days ago!!) but back then my husband voiced his concern that I might lose weight and leave him for someone else (an irrational fear he's always had). My own fear with my upcoming sleeve is that when I lose weight he'll no longer be attracted to me. He's never known me at a healthy weight.

We've been married for almost 16 years. Alcoholism, interfering family, lost jobs, bankruptcy, foreclosure, a baby in the NICU, having 3 babies 3 and under at one point, a move across the country and back again 10 months later that was intended to be permanent, health issues for us both, and a child who has fought a brain tumor for almost 4 years...we've made it through all of that, so I pray we can make it through this one too.

More power to those for whom these carbs are helpful. As for me, I avoid them all like the plague. And after 2 years, I am used to the way I eat and won't get on that slippery carb slope...

Thankfully I have found the opposite to be true in my marriage. I think me losing weight and in a way getting my self confidence back has made our marriage stronger because I've in a way became myself again, the person I was when we first started dating way back in high school. I think it's important to realize that your spouse is going through this too and things like increase attention from the opposite sex and financial strain due to medical costs (if applicable) and increase shopping needs could put stress on a relationship. I just make sure I'm communicating well both what I need and asking what he needs in our relationship.

Just my husband. I tend to be pretty private. Can't imagine why I'd feel like I need to share personal medical information with anyone but him.
