froufrou got a reaction from fed-up in Wegovy vs bariatric surgery
I've done both. Surgery first and it didn't stop me thinking about food constantly. The wegovy has stopped the chatter in my brain. It's a miracle for me to be honest. In my opinion, I do think it's something chemical in some of us and we need medication to help.
Can I ask why your insurance has stopped paying for it?

I have been anemic my whole life. Been seeing a hematologist for 5 years. Why are you going to a obgyn ? You need a hematologist. Iron infusion work you just need them more often most likely some people need them monthly according to my hematologist. Yes Bariatric surgery causes anemia. You don’t need a colonoscopy you need a infusion. My numbers were similar to your before my surgery I get infusion 2 or 3 times per year so I am not worried

    4 years?!
I could quote this word for word, accept I will add that I'm big into fitness, particularly Jujitsu at a fantastic dojo. While I too gained 20lbs over my goal weight, it almost all muscle. For sometime I traded my addition of eating for exercise. I wasn't happy. It's felt just like when I was obsessed with eating. Counting, measure, weighing, starving. I had to turn things around because I was just repeating a path of insanity.
I'm at a so much happier place now! Now I push and strengthen and push by body for the challenge and increased quality of life. Not to escape my demons. Boy oh boy has this been an eye opening journey.
If I had to go back in time, I'd still happily do. Sooner in fact. But would have learned to love myself FIRST. Because for me, the depression, and self-guilt didn't leave along with fat. Nor did I gain well-being from the attention.
Once I began to work on my mind with the same determination that led me to work on my body, I became and am unstoppable!
    We've got this!

I started Wegovy in December and I've lost 30 lbs. It has turned off the obsessive food chatter in my head and I feel like a normal person food wise for the first time ever. This is how normal people must feel!

I just started on wegovy injections this past Monday. I am targeting to lose 40 pounds, I got some padding in there for summer weight vs. winter:)

When was the last time you were checked for levels? You may need an infusion/iv.

I am just wondering if anyone else here has suffered from severe anemia. Just a quick background, I had the sleeve, which leaked. Then RNY. I am vegetarian. I am wondering if the surgeries (I had stents put in when I had the leak (total of 7 attempts and then it had to be sewn in place) have damaged something that is leading to anemia?
I have had anemia for a couple of years now - I had a series of 5 infusions of Iron, but it didn't do much for me.
I asked my obgyn (who was checking hormones) to add in my Iron levels, and sure enough it's still low and so I am going back to see her. I KNOW she's going to flag me now for a colonoscopy, because I guess that's a conclusion you could make from my anemia. I really don't want to have to go through a whole slew of testing if this is a common thing in bariatric surgeries.
Here are my blood test results - no other bloods were out of whack.
    Ferritin 6
    Iron Binding Capacity 395
    Saturation 6
    Iron Total 23
    Hemoglobin 11.6
    Hemocrit 35.3
    MCV 79.3
    MCH 26.1
    RDW 16
I would just really appreciate some feedback from people who might have been through the same thing.

@GreenTealael that dal looks so good! I’ve been on a real Soup kick lately… I think because of my stomach issues lately it’s the most comfortable way to get food in me, and the most nutritious. Now I’m craving Dal!

@ms.sss would you share your recipe for your biscuits? Looks to me like you had a British cream tea! 🤤

why yes, yes i did! (but i had coffee lol).
when i was a teenager, i worked in a british-themed bakery/cafe in an amusement park. they had a "tea time hour" and sold these babies by the truckload. i fell in love with them then. (that and steak & kidney pie! lol)
    and here you go!:
    Ingredients
3 cups all-purpose flour 3 tbsp sugar 1/2 tsp salt 4 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp cream of tartar 3/4 cup FROZEN butter (grated) 1 egg, beaten 1.25 cup whole milk Instructions
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Combine the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Mix in the grated butter into flour mixture. Don't go too crazy here - you want to see small, pea-sized pieces of butter throughout the dough. Add in the milk and egg and mix just until the ingredients are combined. The dough will be sticky but don't keep working it. Turn the dough out onto a generously floured surface. Sprinkle some flour on to the top of dough so it won't stick to your fingers and knead 10-15 times. If the dough is super sticky just sprinkle on some additional flour. Pat the dough out to 3/4 - 1 inch thickness and cut with a biscuit cutter or glass (alternatively you can just drop large spoonfuls on the baking sheet) Place the biscuits on a lightly greased baking sheet or parchment lined baking sheet or silicone baking sheet and bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until golden brown on top. For extra yumminess, brush the tops of the biscuits with melted butter immediately after taking out of oven. Serve warm, its better!; or let cool and serve with fresh whipped cream and your choice of jam.

I had a failed sleeve - I did drop about 60 lbs with it but then started to gain. It was so stretched out. I lost a further 50 lbs with bypass. I’m now looking to do a distal to help shed the remainder of this weight I just can’t get off.

I have the same problem @roses436 - I think about food ALL the time and graze ALL the time. Not good for RNY... I’ve gained 25 lbs back (I didn’t even reach goal) and am now going to be having a revision (3rd surgery - went from sleeve to RNY and now to distal). THIS time though I am going to get some therapy for my stupid brain... hopefully I can sort this out once and for all because I do not want to keep repeating the same mistakes over and over.

Like you I smoked - I used to smoke 20 a day and gave up. The thing is, you can avoid cigarettes but you can’t avoid food.

My advice is to get some therapy - I honestly think it’s the only way otherwise it seems some of us are doomed to repeat our ways. Surgery does not fix it - not for eaters like us.

Hang in there froufrou. You are doing great. I had to wear a heart monitor and do a stress test. Things came back all good. When I did my 2 year appointment, the surgeon was surprised to see I lost and did not gain with covid and everything going on. She said a majority of her patients have gained some. So don’t feel bad. You just have to jump back on the wagon.

It isn’t THAT much but it will be if I keep going like this. Have to put the brakes on now before it’s too late. A distal is where they take one part of a tube and stick it somewhere else... lengthening the limb so that there is more malabsorption. That’s kind of the idea haha.

I’m planning on staying on the Saxenda till my surgery - it’s really holding me accountable especially with alcohol. I had a drink on it my first night and felt terribly ill - my guess is my blood sugar went very low. So, I’ve given up alcohol and I have to say it’s really hard! It’s been my go to, to destress. Doing a lot of deep breathing and positive self talk lol.

Hi, FrouFrou. 25 pounds isn't that much in the grand scheme of things, and it sounds like you are ready to get things back on track. What is a "distal bypass?"
