    Obesity epidemic, society, dieting

Dammit Janet!!! So wait. You mean we DIDN'T get fat from eating too many fruits and veggies? Nice charts/graphs. On a more serious note, though, the whole concept of BMI is a flawed. We're being told what "fat" is and how it applies to our genders/populations. But, do we know that it's abnormal for women to be by their definition skinny/fat? Doesn't that help contribute to fertility? During famines where women's body weights drop below certain fat%, then amenhorrea (sp?) ensues...amenhorrea=infertile=no babies=destruction of the species...
  2. @Airstream88 Dayum! That's some menu! I want to party with you, Lee Harvey! What time is dinner?
  3. @Diana_in_Philly My nut said that she has many patients who are multi-year out who still use a protein drink in the mornings or who add protein drink to their coffees. She told me that if I went that route, it might free me up from a protein angle so that I could add more veggies to my meal rather than eating an all-protein-every-meal type of routine. (I'm thrilled about that cuz I do love mah veggies with my meats!)
  4. Ok, I'll play! I'm gonna pretend that I'm post WLS by 3 weeks. At 3 weeks I'm at the soft solids. My daily protein goal is 74g for my height. My portion size is 2oz Protein/meal; 1oz Protein/snack. I'm to have 3 meals and 1-2 Snacks daily, but since I'm still so newly after surgery it's really 5-6 mini meals of the same size. Meal size by volume is about 1/4-1/2cup. (Because I'm so close to surgery, I'm sure I will be relying very heavily still on protein supplements and will also probably need 3 meals + 3 snacks per day...) B: 1/4c 2% Daisy cottage cheese + 2tbs Walden Farm strawberry syrup (7g P) MS: 1/4c 0% Fat HEB Greek yogurt + 2tbsp Walden Farm blueberry syrup (6g P) L: 1/4c salmon salad (1oz canned, drained, skinned pink salmon; 1/2 hb lg egg; 1 tbsp 2% Daisy cottage cheese; 1 tsp country dijon; 1 tbsp Walden Farm Amazin Chipotle Mayo; TJ EBBS) (8g P) AS: Same as lunch (8g P) D: 2oz blackened tilapia + 1 tbsp avocado + 1 tbsp mild salsa (9g P) BS: 1/2c PBC protein pudding (homemade) (11g P) Daily Total Before Supplementing with Protein Drinks: 401cals; 49g Protein; 12g F; 20g Carbs; 3g Fiber; 17g Net Carbs (*Note: I will need about 9fl oz of Premier Protein Vanilla to hit my protein goal for the day. I'll probably just use those in my morning decaff coffee as a coffee creamer. (Daily Total After Supplementing with the Protein Drinks: 532 cals; 74g Protein; 14g Fat; 24g Carbs; 5g Fiber; 19g Net Carbs)

    TODAY IS THE DAY

Hope it went well! How ya doin?
  7. Great posts everyone! I have to constantly be present to the reality that my surgeon will be operating on my tummy/not my brain. It scares the crap out of me, because I have used food to self-medicate. I still love this book and thing it has been very helpful on many levels. Feeling Good, The New Mood Therapy can help with things like depression, anxiety, addictions, personal relationships...etc.
  8. What plan do you presently follow? (i.e. What are you eating, how do you eat it, how do you drink, how do you exercise...)

    PCOS cysters

Ahhh, got it. ((hugs)) Sorry you experience this.
  10. @maggiekay949 I don't know how knowledgeable I am, but I have been managing to control further degeneration of blood sugar by diet (low carb), for the last 17 years. Usual onset of full blown diabetes from pre-diabetes is about 10 years per Dr. Richard K. Bernstein. My last A1c was 5.3. Dr. Bernstein has a website and an excellent book for anyone with blood sugar issues from PCOS to pre-diabetes to full blown T2 and T1. He helped pioneer the use of the home glucometer and eating to your meter. Here's the link to him.
  11. Ouch! Sorry you're having issues. Honestly if it were me, I'd be concerned. Protein drinks can be fairly insulinogenic for some of us with blood sugar issues. My BGs do go up when all I'm consuming are protein drinks. But more importantly, the Fairlife milk and yogurt also have carbs/sugars that may be affecting you. What kind of sauce? Marinara? That can also have hidden sugars. If it were me, I'd try dropping the milk first and replace it with ricotta cheese (the lowest grams of carbs you can find with it). Next I'd drop the yogurt or switch to the lowest carb Greek yogurt (plain) that you can find. I'd also test FBGs, pre-prandial, and post prandial until you know what your BGs are doing when you wake up and in response to your meals. It may mean that for right now, you still need your medications. Hopefully they will go down again once you are on solid food and can limit highly insulinogenic foods in favor of dense proteins, low glycemic veggies, small amounts of healthy fats, and low glycemic berries (if any fruit). Hang in there!

    PCOS cysters

Who on earth thinks it's a fake dx? It's a syndrome--so is a collection of symptoms rather than a disease that is attached the failure of a certain organ, etc such as (polycystic kidney disease). PCOS post meno=metabolic syndrome. These symptoms are all tied to insulin resistance and it's unclear whether it's the chicken or the egg--meaning, did obesity bring on the insulin resistance and PCOS, or did underlying PCOS disrupt the endocrine system and drive obesity. All of my docs: PCP, oncologist, bariatric surgeon, pulmonologist, cardiologist, orthopedist, and plastics dude all believe it. Most treat so many patients with it all day. For me, it was definitely PCOS first, obesity second. I was on prednisone (high doses) for a blood disease when I was a child (6mos-11years). By 14 I had full blown PCOS with hirsutism and was gaining weight at an alarming rate. I went on my first diet at 9. I'm hoping that WLS will help mitigate the most important factors of PCOS, but if I have any say, will choose the RNY over VSG because of greater hormonal reset (so I've heard).

    Bypass vs Sleeve

Honestly, I have so many metabolic issues that I feel the RNY with the "reset" it provides is the right path for me. The only thing complicating it is that I have some pre-cancerous cells in my duodenum and inflammatory cells in my stomach and pre-cancerous cells in my esophagus. They wouldn't be able to monitor them after an RNY. But these were caused by GERD, so I'm really afraid to do the VSG, cuz the last thing I want is a second surgery and for the GERD to come back (it's in remission through diet right now)...I will find out on my 3rd visit, Monday, what the verdict is--will I be having surgery or will she say I'm just not a good candidate for either. I don't exactly know what I will do if she says "no".
  14. @Torriluv87 Please, please, please input! The more the better. I hear ya on the low carb. As a pre-op, PCOSer, I'm highly insulinogenic, so if I eat a small serving of carbs, I firstly crave a bigger serving, and secondly, my blood sugar starts the roller coaster. I get screaming hungry within 2 hours of eating a huge meal... Do you think the WLS gave you the benefit of the metabolic reset? My surgeon said that some will get immediately relief from incessant hunger, but others will not experience that same relief. Some will lose really fast and others will hardly notice a difference. God, I hope that's not me! Are there other habits you've developed that really helps you remain successful and on track?
  15. Nah, travel the high road on your MIL, cuz karma's a ******. But wow. Just. Wow. You were on the 2 week liquid pre-op diet when she did that? I woulda flipped my whicket. I'm ok on cakes and cookies and stuff, but shazam! I've never met a chip I didn't like. And I'm really trying to gird my loins for what it's gonna be like to drink liquid while Mr. Fluffy is chowing down on a ribeye or hambourgese. There might be blood shed involved...just sayin. Do your "yes" and "no" foods change? Or can you count on a "yes" to stay a "yes"? How did you arrive at that yes/no list? Do you think your hunger control stems from the low carb element of the diet or does it come as a side effect to the WLS? Congrats on your success, btw! May I experience even a little of it!

    Day 5 liver shrinkage diet

Cool! Cordial here is synonymous with sticky sweet sugary alcoholic drink. Good times, right? I figured it was something lost in translation.
  17. Hope things went well! Can't wait for your update. Was the worry worth it?

    Surgery Scheduled!!

Congrats! So excited for you. I may be in December. Trying to decide if I want to deal with recovery (again) during the holidays. Most of my breast cancer/reconstruction surgeries were done between Nov. 1 and Jan. 1. So many effed up holidays as a result. LOL.
  19. Prayers and keep trying! I posted a long one on your other post! ((hugs))
  20. Cool site! Thanks for the link @Berry78
  21. Yeah I hear ya! We can doooooooo eeeeeettttt! LOL. I'm so bad that I can't look at my "end game." I can only focus on the present decade goal or I will lose it and get so discouraged. LOL. So as far as I'm concerned my one job is to break through these effin 230's lol! Even though 170 still seems heavy to me...I'd prolly tear it up to be 170 again. For just a week, I'd like to be small enough to be carried around in someone's backpack. hehe. (My super top secret goal is 135-140lbs. I was told I'm an idiot and that I will look like a raisin--a very white--very old--slightly moldy raisin. Good times.)
  22. I am gonna be one pissed puppy if I go into surgery, rearrange my innerds, and only come out of this dance at 172-173lbs. I used 287 x .6 = 172.2lbs. Grrrrr! *grumpy* So if I'm extra diligent can I do better than this chart?
  23. Saying prayers. It sucks. Now what everyone doesn't want...duh duh dunnnhhhhhh--yes, that's right! It's time for the "Advice from a Pre-Surgery Newbie" Show, starring? FluffyChix! Ok, so now for some practical advice. You are a medical professional--so you must be aware of this stuff--if not, get to know it! 1. Take baby steps. Begin again. Today. Right now. Only focus on the next bite. Today your one job is to dump the carbonated diet drinks. Dump em baby. Use LaCroix as a sub if you must. 2. Tomorrow or when you feel you can, work on the next step...make your snacks healthy and filling: 2oz of protein, or PB3s, or 2oz of GS apple + 2tbsp peanut butter (I'm presurg and this snack right here fills me for 3 hours). 3. Next step, STOP drinking while eating. You can do this. It's actually the easiest step. Make it the first step if you want!!! 4. Next step, go back to eating protein first with every meal. Follow the baby step meal order: protein, non-starchy veg, high carb bs, dessert. 5. Next step, get rid of all the sugar and carby nonsense. Lose the desserts and high carb nonsense. Dump all the sugar from your diet. Tighten up your daily food intake. REALLY this is the fish or cut bait time. It may take several days...get rid of the CRAP. 6. Go back to planning your meals for 1 day. Weigh and measure everything. All. The. Things. Each day, recommit to weighing and tracking (and planning--don't forget the planning) for that day and that day only. Each day. Every day. Recommit. 7. Start walking every day--just around your house, inside your house if necessary...just 5 minutes if that's all you can do. Work up every day to more. And that's as simple as it gets. Don't eat within 3-4 hours of bedtime. Sleep elevated. Make low acid choices. Chew the crap outta stuff and makes notes on what makes the GERD and your esophagus feel worse. Take your PPIs. Treat yourself kindly and with respect. Congratulate yourself on getting through some serious ****. Congratulate yourself on graduating and improving your life. Go back to basics. Each day plan and log your food. Only focus on taking the very next BEST bite. Don't forget to surrender to your higher power. Read about CBT and food addiction. It's an awesome tool for overeating or eating with abandon. And lastly, don't put off a revision if it's called for with the GERD. Just jump in and get it done. Don't waste any more of your life on this. But you do need to get the overeating/eating off plan stuff together cuz as you know, you can eff any surgery if you're determined to do so. Do OA or Greysheeters. Go to therapy. Just concentrate on changing one thing at a time. Take baby steps and you can turn your life around. This is exactly how I backed into starting my new life on the pre-surgery plan. Before I could even do my plan, I had to slowly and gradually back into it until I had strung together so many successful days that I'd built momentum and resolve. Resolve and commitment grow exponentially with success. The more you see the scale move (or whatever your marker of success may be), the stronger the resolve to stay on plan. Good luck. If I can do this, you can do this. I'm the queen of recidivism. I practically wrote the book on it.

    Back to work SNACK ideas

chili chicken pot pie soup king ranch casserole soup anything curry lentil soup redbeans n "rice" (cauli rice) (All of the above soups are more like "stewps" -- heavy on the protein elements, short on thick liquid that is there mainly to keep things moist and going through your pouch smoothly. Ideally, these are just small containers that are leftovers from the previous night's/week of dinners. Just nuke for a minute and bam, satisfying meal in minutes!) eggface's ricotta bake
  25. @Apple203 As soon as I hit 5 years, my oncologist started encouraging me to get RNY surgery. He told me the studies were coming back that WLS reduced recurrence risks substantially. Thanks for sharing this study!!
