    Open to be a mentor

The only way I've ever been able to get off sugar is to cut out all simple carbs at the same time. Anything with a high glycemic index goes. That includes rice, pasta, bread, ALL fruit, potatoes, carrots, etc. I've done this a few times over the years and it works like a charm every time. I have three days of cravings and then candy doesn't appeal to me at all. Later I can add some simple carbs back in, with meals that will slow their absorption. Surgery didn’t work?

She provoked you mercilessly. Your response was not well thought out ;), but it was what the troll was working for. You only get better at dealing with trolls after a lot experience. Although it can be good sport for those of us so inclined, I don't recommend it if you don't already have something of a trollish streak yourself. I hope you feel better about your weight loss journey soon, and I'm sorry you were subjected to such hateful comments by Abreille and the shockingly misogynistic Johnny Cacks.

    Surgery didn’t work?

Can I block users? I'm sickened by the abusive behavior of two commenters in particular. I'm new and I won't be sticking around if posts like the ones by Abielle and Johnny Cakes are tolerated. It's very poor forum management to allow people like this to prey on new users. They're essentially trolls.

    Surgery didn’t work?

I had surgery on August 7th Starting weight: 225 Surgery day: 220 Current weight: 196 I'm losing more slowly than you, but I'm not bothered about it. I feel so much better. I have more energy. My body is my friend again. I'm a former marathon runner, and even then, my body hung onto weight like it knew a five year famine was coming. I'm still losing a pound a week, which is sort of funny, because my last significant loss (45 lbs in 2014) went quicker than this. My diet is right on target. I haven't been exercising so far. I'm not going to worry about it. Sent from my ONE A2005 using BariatricPal mobile app

    What I want to believe

The simple fact of the matter is, only a small percentage of people who lose weight can keep it off over a five-year period. There are studies that show this conclusively. Doctors no longer dispute this. It's been years since a doctor suggested that I lose weight, because research shows that when we lose weight our metabolism drops, and it stays at the slower rate even after we regain the weight. That's why dieters who regain the weight often gain more than they lost. It's a losing, or rather gaining, battle. So doctors have generally shut up about weight loss, except to suggest, as mine did, bariatric surgery. It's the only thing that gives us a chance of keeping the weight off. It's not a character flaw or weakness that gets the weight back on, but the fact that our bodies want it back. This was a great survival strategy when food was scarce, but with our current abundance of food, it's a real problem. I mean, the fact that after surgery our weight loss can stall for weeks at a time when we're eating less than 800 calories a day is crazy, right? Not when you think about the history of our species and how the body will do whatever it can to keep us alive when we're starving. We're fighting years of evolutionary success at staying alive during hungry times. It's not about willpower. Sent from my ONE A2005 using BariatricPal mobile app
  7. I had my gastric sleeve surgery on 8/7/17. My starting weight was 225. I lost 20 pounds in the first four weeks, and five in the following two and a half weeks. I know I need to change it up. I'm consistently eating under 800 calories a day, but I haven't started exercising (it's tricky because I have chronic fatigue), and I get most of my calories late in the day, right up until bedtime. The thing is, that 25 pound loss moved me from practically disabled to relatively normal. Even if I never lost another pound, I feel so much better and I'm so glad that I had the surgery. That 25 pounds has made a huge difference in my life and mobility and health. I'll be disappointed if I don't lose more, but I can live with this. Sent from my ONE A2005 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Shitataki noodle???

Thanks for this. I bought some last week but haven't tried them yet. I'm reluctant to give up pouch space for something with no nutritional value. When I use them I'll pair them with seafood or fish and see how that works. Sent from my ONE A2005 using BariatricPal mobile app

  10. I'm just four weeks post-op and haven't had any hair loss yet. I lost half of it once before because of a medication I was on (Topamax), and it was sooo stressful and scary. My hair was down to my butt and it eventually clogged up my plumbing. The plumber extracted a raccoon-sized wad of it from the basement pipes. I know this isn't the case for many of you, but my half-head of hair looked fine because I have a lot of hair. It drove me crazy while it was happening, but if it happens again I'll just get it cut to my shoulders and relax. However, none of that is the reason for my reply. I have dry, frizzy, graying hair now that I tame into a straight and shiny mane with various products, but the one I think might help fine, thinning hair is Sebastian Cellophane. It's a demi-permanent treatment that smoothes and thickens the hair shaft, making your hair look glossy and full--like after dying, but without the color. It comes in various tints as well as clear, which is the one I use. I get it on Amazon. Doing the treatment yourself is a bit of work (probably not so bad if you don't have hair down to your butt), but it really makes my hair look 20 years younger. I know all too well how stressful it is to lose your hair, but it will grow back. Sent from my ONE A2005 using BariatricPal mobile app
  11. I was sleeved 8/7 and my recovery has been easy like yours. I only felt hunger pangs when I was dehydrated. I was drinking 32oz of water for a day or two and I felt awful--exhausted, moody, and starving--but I did not feel thirsty! Once I got my water up to 64oz, I felt much better. No hunger at all. I had to force myself to drink protein shakes. Since moving on to some real (pureed) food, I feel better, even though I don't actually get hungry. My body knows when its starved, though, and so I eat. Sent from my ONE A2005 using BariatricPal mobile app

    August Mexico surgeries?

My husband and I are having surgery in Tijuana on August 7th. We're going to be at the Nova Clinic. Our surgeon is Dr. Maytorena. They will only keep us for two nights, but I'm thinking we might want to get a hotel for two more nights, just to be safe. Any thoughts or hotel recommendations? Thanks!
