Maggie1955 reacted to orionburn in How much protein?
How in the hell did your doc not go over this with you already!? Oi...
Daily goals (minimum) are 60 oz of Protein and 64 oz of Water. I like to have my protein more at 80g a day but that isn't as easy to do in the beginning. Invest in some better Protein Powder or drinks as well. The package should say how many grams of protein are in a single serving. Some of the premade stuff has a lot of empty calories/carbs. guessing the Atkins ones may not be so bad, though, but never used them.
There's a lot of debate on this, but a good rule of thumb is to keep it to no more than 30g of protein in a serving. The reason for the debate is that some studies show anything over 30g is basically wasted. Better to try and spread your protein out over the course of the day.

My losses have been slower than what I've seen with most other people, and it has not been consistent. I lost 17lbs the first month and every month after that has been 4-8lbs/month. It's frustrating, but I decided I'm just going to work past the frustration and Celebrate anything that isn't a gain, because it's a step towards better health. It's not easy, but every lb counts and they do add up. Stay focused on your journey and celebrate the small wins!

If it were me, I'd err on the side of caution and have the doc or nurse take a look sooner. If nothing else, will put your mind at ease. You could also email that photo to their office and ask if you need to be seen....that might be a good compromise.

I am one week post-op and have pretty much met Protein goals, but have fallen short on fluids. For the protein goals, I chose to use Fairlife non-fat milk to mix my Protein Powder - 1 1/4 cup of Fairlife non-fat milk = 16.2 grams of protein + 2 scoops of protein powder (for example Chike coffee powder) = 20 grams of protein. In one drink, I am getting 36.2 grams of delicious protein. You may want to try using Fairlife milk.

Maggie1955 got a reaction from AK37 in Medicare
Hi Retired Dude! Medicare's National coverage determination for weight loss surgery indicates they will cover open & laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, open & laparoscopic Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch, and laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding for Medicare beneficiaries who have a body-mass index ≥ 35, have at least one co-morbidity related to obesity, and have been previously unsuccessful with medical treatment for obesity. These procedures are only covered when performed at facilities that are: (1) certified by the American College of Surgeons as a Level 1 Bariatric Surgery Center (program standards and requirements in effect on February 15, 2006); or (2) certified by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence (program standards and requirements in effect on February 15, 2006).
The following bariatric surgery procedures are non-covered for all Medicare beneficiaries:
Open adjustable gastric banding; Open and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy; and, Open and laparoscopic vertical banded gastroplasty. With that said, however, individual state (local) Medicare contractors MAY cover laparoscopic vertical gastric sleeve surgery. In what state do you live? I would be happy to find policies set forth by the Medicare contractor in your state. In Pennsylvania, the local Medicare contractor is Novitas Solutions and their policy, in part, indicates:

Laparoscopic SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY for morbid obesity is covered under Local Coverage Determination by this contractor to include patients with the three above criteria (BMI 35 or greater, at least one comorbidity related to obesity and previous unsuccessful medical treatment for obesity) as the following:

Laparoscopic SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY for a 'stand-alone' procedure (i.e., not as part of staged procedure or part of failed attempt that moves to an open procedure)

I'd also be hungry if I ate mashed potatoes, Cream of Wheat, and other starches at just a few weeks out. Personally, these foods don't provide me with much satiety or fullness due to the lack of Protein.
Are scrambled eggs, chili, refried Beans with melted cheese, and tuna acceptable in the soft foods phase that has been prescribed for you?
Although most bariatric food plans allow potatoes and hot cereals, many bariatric patients experience chronic hunger if they don't prioritize protein.
    Good luck to you.

Maggie1955 reacted to Jenae Journey in What's normal weight loss after gastric sleeve surgery
I weighed 297 at my pre- surgery appointment on October 2,2017. My gastric sleeve surgery was on October 17,2017. I only did a liquid diet for two days prior to surgery. I weighed 287 the day of surgery. Today, ( January 16,2018) I currently weigh 228 pounds. I've officially lost 69 pounds in less than 3 months. Is that normal ? I'm female, 42 years old, and 5"6.
I'm happy with the weight loss, but curious to know what other people have experienced after having the gastric sleeve surgery.

Please note I have a ton of energy...take my Vitamins faithfully, I struggle with getting all my required Protein intake at times and my appetite has decreased tremendously since surgery . But at the end of the day .... the weight is really melting off me. I went from wearing a size 2xl / 3xl down to a medium. The mediums fit snug, but it's a blessing to be able to fit a medium in less than 3 months after surgery.
I have completely phased out of Lane Bryant clothes and can now fit cute clothes from Victoria Secret .
Please share your weight lose experiences after the gastric sleeve surgery, I'd love to hear about your weight loss journey.

Although I really didn’t have any “food funerals”, I was worried in The months leading up to surgery that I would no longer qualify for surgery because of a lower BMI. At my very first visit to the weight management center I weighed in at 209 (around May or June 2017). Then, on December 15, 2017 I weighed in at 229! Needless to say the nutritionist was freaking out and told me I immediately needed to start a pre-op liquid diet. I did so grudgingly, knowing that Christmas and New Year’s was going to be very depressing! I. The end, though, on surgery day (January 2, 2018) I weighed in at 209. Today (1/15/18), I weigh 198.6. You shouldn’t have a problem losing 5 pounds I a week if you do a pre-op liquid diet and follow the plan to a “T”. Good luck to you!

Thanks for the kind words, all!!
As as far as diet advice, during rapid weight loss I followed my surgeons plan to a T. I just kept losing and losing. I got to 10 lbs below goal (my goal weight was 163 lbs) and started adding back in some complex carbs to stop the weight loss. I've been in the 150-153 lbs range ever since.
FWIW, I still can't eat 4 oz in one sitting. I usually max out at around 6 bites of anything. I still eat high Protein, moderate fat, low carb - usually 50 or less carbs per day - and I count total carbs, not net carbs. During rapid weight loss I stuck to less than 15 per day.
I eat around 1,000 calories a day, sometimes a few extra if it's a long run or heavy workout day. I eat mostly protein and veggies, with an occasional serving of quinoa or a slice of sprouted whole grain toast with PB2 in the morning.
I cook every morning, pack lunches for myself and my husband, and also cook dinner every night. I've learned how to use herbs and spices to flavor my food and I really do enjoy cooking delicious and unique meals - we don't do boring, lol.
Oh, and I still only drink Water, one 6 oz cup of coffee every morning, and dry red or white wine.
All of this is my day to day norm, obviously - but if we have a date night, I'll eat a few bites of my husband's Pasta, or we'll share some cheesecake moderation is the spice of life!

Maggie1955 reacted to Creekimp13 in What can I drink after weight loss surgery?
    Stuff you can drink:
Very low calorie (less than 20 calories a cup) fruit juices. Look for the word "diet" and read the lable.
Water flavor enhancers like Mio. I was a soda drinker...and I love Mio.
Decaf coffee and tea. (one cup of regular is thought to be ok by most plans)
    Herbal tea.
    sugar free hot cider
I make my own hot cocoa by heating almond milk, cocoa powder, splenda and vanilla...use real milk if you'd rather.
    Hot broth.
    Ice water with lemon.
    lemonade with splenda
    Chrystal light
    sugar free Kool Aid

Try the Mio...there are a million flavors. They have an orange tangerine that might work.
Also, give herbal teas a chance. Ginger lemon is awesome.

I called my surgeon's office and spoke to one of the nurses. They suggested it was my tummy telling me I was moving too fast whether it was eating too fast, eating too much at one bite, or eating too heavy of a food. I am going back to liquids for 24 hours to see if that settles things down any.
Good luck tomorrow Maggie. Let me know how you make out.
