Hi I'm new to the site and new to VSG. I am 55 mom of 4 kids 13-20. I started my wls experience 11 years ago when my husband had RNY. His experience was horrific. They cut the main artery to his stomach and then sent him home still bleeding internally to return a week later. They dehydrated him because they forgot to give him an in and wouldn't let him have anything to eat or drink. This nearly killed him but also caused chronic kidney stones to form which he still gets to this day. The good news is that he has maintained a 100 pound weight loss for 11 years. So, when I found myself at 223 pounds and looked at myself in family photos I decided to look into what was happening in the field today. I started looking at the end of February 2017. I had my first doctor appointment march 6 and by the end of May had surgery scheduled for June 22. My insurance company approved the same day the doctor sent in the forms! On top of that I had no copay. So here I am.
I had surgery on June 22. I have had a great recovery process so far. I'm excited to see where this journey takes me.

My plastic surgeon said I'll hit a 2. - 3 month stall and that's when I should come back regardless if it is at goal or not, donuts probably very common. I think the surgery is a tool and we have to put in some hard work whether it's food choices or exercise or both to be most successful. So, if you want to get to 100% of your extra weight you can do it! You just have to be very deliberate. I saw my pcp a few weeks ago. My goal set with my surgeon is 135. I'm large busted. I haven't seen 135 since 17. At 29 I was 155 and a size 10 and felt great. My pcp said 150-155 is a more realistic goal for me. So, I'm shooting for 135, but think I'll be elated if I hit 150.
I checked an age and gender bmi site yesterday and i think 150 was a good bmi for a 55 year old female my height. It said at 135 that might be too low, even though the traditional chart says 135 is perfect. It's all relative. I don't think a chart can capture us. I think we need to see how we feel at a certain weight.

3-4 ounces depending on the density of the food. I ate a packet of the Starkist tuna Creations and it was yummy. I think I ate about 2 ounces of steak and an ounce of a sweet potato. I'm at 8 weeks now and it's probably close to the same. I had the tuna tonight and didn't eat the whole 2.8 pouch - i had a few rice crackers with it.
My average calorie intake per day for the last month has been 700 calories.

just because you're drinking "throughout the day" doesn't mean you're drinking enough.
one way to be sure - get a 64oz water bottle. fill it every morning. finish it by the time you go to bed every night. if you do that for a few days and your urine is still dark, it's doctor time... there might be a kidney issue.
but def do what i said before going to the dr so he doesn't just tell you "you're not drinking enough". take one variable out of the equation so you aren't wasting his time or yours.

I bought a case of Protein Water from
Costco. For the life of me I can't remember the brand at the moment. But it's a pink grapefruit flavor that isn't too sweet. It's more of a clean flavor. My memory is awful but I think it was 15g of protein per bottle.

I am down 80 pounds as of today:) My family have been very supportive from the start of my journey and I am so, grateful to all of them. I could not have done it with out them. Looking to get the other 20 pounds off and I will be at my goal I set for myself.

I've been having such bathroom issues post surgery and I think it's from all of the artificial sweeteners in these Protein water/zero calorie/zero carb drinks. When I was on my diet roller coaster I always hated how weight watchers pushed diet sodas and sugar free stuff. I purchased some granulated Monk Fruit sweetener for post op to add to my plain Greek yogurt and I seem to tolerate it well. Someone in my bariatric support group told me that she totally tollerates maple Syrup and honey-never had a dumping episode with either. I cannot wait to be healed enough to get rid of the artificial stuff in these protein waters. For now I need the liquid and protein so I'm going to hang on for a little longer, but like you, I've avoided them for so long and definitely feel they're sending me into bathroom fits.

Yes! The sugar alcohol in the artificial sweeteners makes me so sick! I get a hot flash and cold sweat and super nauseous! Stevia doesn't do that to me just the ones with sugar alcohol. I think stevia is natural so that's probably why it doesn't make me sick. Good luck! It is awful!
I can add a little sugar to coffee with no effect. I think that's better than artificial especially since I only only 2 packets and don't usually drink the whole cup

Normal. I was diabetic prior to surgery. I had a 5.7 after a 25 pound weight loss and my doc said one more A1C like that and she will remove the diagnosis completely. I just googled the chart and 5.1 weans your avg blood sugar was 101. When I was hypoglycemic I had an A1C of 4 and they said my avg blood sugar 3 months was 70.

Thanks so much! Great advice. I think I'm being hormonal too- in that wonderful time when my cycle is coming every 3-5 months . Ugh! Plus the hormones from surgery/ weight loss.

I'm usually right around 50 for protein so I know I need to step that up right away. Also just got new Vitamins because I kept missing the children's chewables because of the taste- I moved to an adult mini yesterday. Taking one in the morning and one at night.

On a bright note I went to kohls today with my daughter and was able to buy 3 blouses off the clearance rack in a large rather than a 2 xl for the first time! I haven't bought any new clothes since surgery because I've been shopping in my closet. Had multiple coupons and only paid $2 out of pocket- 2 were Jennifer Lopez! So that helped my mood a bit. I didn't try them on until I got home- I figured they could be goal shirts if they didn't fit! They fit well, so that was encouraging. I'm going to take my measurements tomorrow.
    Thanks again!

I'm 8 weeks out. I need to vent and verbalize my struggles. I've been on a stall for 2 weeks now. I know it will pass. My problem is that I'm dealing with so many emotions right now. My husband just left for 6 weeks in Japan. So I'm a "single" mom for the time being. I've just had to start working in the office 4 days a week after 20 years of working mainly from home. School is just starting so I'm feeling like I'm running constantly. I miss eating. I miss being able to have a sandwich or just to munch. I've been keeping my calories between 500 and 900. I tolerate most foods well. Haven't been getting my fluids in. I've only been able to get to the gym once a week.
I haven't been a binge eater but was a sugarholic. food doesn't satisfy me anymore. I do manage to have the self control not to eat cakes, pastries and carbs at this point, but I'm not sure how I have. I think the combination of not losing and not feeling satisfied has me feeling a bit down.
I'm worried that going to fail this weight loss journey. What if I do stop losing? What if I cut out most of my stomach just to stay overweight?
Does anyone else feel like this? How can I get past it?
