I regularly have at least one shake meal a day. When I'm feeling like I'm craving the wrong stuff I think 2 would get me back in track.

One thing to think about, the hormonal effects of bariatric surgery can cause some pretty strong feelings of depression. I dealt with it for a couple of months after surgery, feeling exceptionally depressed for seemingly no reason. I had never previously had depression problems before that. I knew that something was off, but couldn't shake it. By my 3rd month post-surgery, the symptoms passed. If things don't feel right, you start to feel worse, or the symptoms don't pass, please talk to your surgeon to see if what you are dealing with might be something along those lines.

I totally know how you all feel. I've been feeling lonely a lot. Mind you I have support from family and friends and my wls support groups. But it usually hits me when I'm alone. Or when I'm out and see others eating whatever they want. I feel like no one can relate to me. I just try to stay focus on my journey and why I did it.

We stay away from Pasta and buttery dishes. If we go out to dinner, I order grilled fish or a bun lessburger, and my husband orders a salad and we share with no explanation to anyone. I don't think we ever leave without a go box. My husband being a long time diabetic, potatoes, pasta and carbohydrates are never eaten. My husband has kept off 100 lbs for four years, but if we strayed into certain restaurants like yummy Olive Garden, it would be disastrous. I lost sixty lbs, regained 30, even though we rarely eat out and have no trigger foods in our house, I struggle daily. I eat less than my husband but nothing works. Two years post sleeve I started regaining. I envy people who get the weight off and it stays off. This sleeve wasn't so magic like it was in the beginning. I am still dieting and having Vitamin deficiencies.

I went out out to eat at Red Lobster last night. Told the waiter that me and my 13 y.o. Daughter were sharing a plate. Also ordered lobster bisque on the side. All in all, ate 1/3 of my lobster bisque, and 3 bites of her baked potato. She ate the rest. We had to get to go boxes. When the waiter asked me if I enjoyed everything, I said it was delicious! It was. I don't care what people think of me, but I love the cost savings at this point.

That is the most dramatic thing I have heard today. " Manager your waitress wanted to make sure my food was good, please retrain her as a point of urgency" Funny

I am sorry but the waitress is not responsible for every humans feelings to a simple question she asks every single person on a daily basis if she notices they are not eating much food, as most of the time it means the food is not good. How was she to know this was not the case for this one person lol cut the woman some slack, she was just trying to do a job to a good standard.

I found myself gaining weight. My exercise and my portions were ok, but I am drinking too many high sugar alcohol drinks. I just went back to basics, drinking Protein Shakes and clean food. I need to cut the alcohol and track my meals. The only way I can do this is being accountable about what I am really doing and stop consuming (or drinking) empty calories.

I don't drink coffee, never have but I do drink Unsweetened black tea everyday. I cannot stand artificial sweeteners and I was having an issue getting my Water down so my NUT suggested unsweetened tea. I drank Decaf in the early days but after 6 months have switched to caffeinated and it hasn't had a negative effect on me personally but everyone is different.

Dreamingsmall- the other thing I meant to say - sorry- this is getting long- is that you really need to eat Breakfast and lunch- if you're skipping meals then that's probably why you're stalled. Your body will hold on to weight if it feels like it isn't going to be fed- even if it's just a yogurt or glass of milk - get your metabolism going in the morning by have something when you first get up. Your metabolism won't start up it's engine until it's challenged by food (or a liquid supplement like milk or a Protein shake)- otherwise you're telling your body to only metabolize for half the day- and you want it to burn all day- it's your "fat furnace" for lack of a better term
Anyway- I hope that helps- it will make a big difference if you have something every 3-4 hours - and that means protein-
Keep it up! Just eat more

I am allowed it on my plan, and no issues with hunger, infact its 3.27pm and I have not even had anything to eat yet lol. I had coffee in the morning. I supposed it depends on the person. I agree though I only use a small amount of coffee unlike before I used to just pour it in!

As for me: I LOVE my coffee. I think that was one of my first questions for the surgeon post-op. "How soon can I drink coffee?" followed by "How did the surgery go?" I am losing and I have 1-2 cups a day. I need to adopt a new lifestyle, and I am. Coffee is part of it. For me, there are bigger issues, such as what drives me to eat when I'm not hungry, etc.

    Hi
They don't want us drinking caffeine because it's a stimulant. It can make you hungrier and eat more - for what it's worth I stopped before surgery and haven't picked it back up just because I'm scared of being hungry- I've had a cup two times though and boy did it work! I was buzzing around like a bee!
Like someone else mentioned, you're going to have so much energy just from the weight loss and the change in diet (less carbs) that you won't even need it- good luck to you!

I'm 8 weeks out- I have about a half cup a few times a week. The key is you have to drink a couple of glasses of Water for every caffeinated drink you have because caffeine is a diuretic.

My go to explanation is that I had surgery for some digestive issues. Only one person has probed further and I told them it wasn't my fav thing to talk about because it's kinda personal. I think people just assume I had some bowel issue. I debated not telling anyone anything but that didn't seem realistic. Now, post op, ppl understand why I'm eating weird or less and I don't feel like I have to hide my fatigue, and I've been given the space and understanding to recover without having to "hide."

    No.
Are your stats accurate/current? what was the most you lost? When did you stop losing? When did you start gaining? Did you ever hit goal?
What do you eat? Do you weigh your food? Do you track your food?

My surgeon told me this was fine. When your at a stall or gaining instead of losing weight then you do the three shakes a day for two weeks, puréed foods afterwards then regular food. Same diet as post op. Hope this helps. It helps me get back on track every time

I will make the right decision (as everyone else does) with my surgeon and not by someones post. However, posts to the original subject matter is valuable to me as others experiences give me talking points to share with my surgeon. I don't know it all folks, that is why I am here. I appreciate everyone's input.

Pretty sure you confused me and JohnnyCakes as I was only speaking politely and having a intelligent discussion on a message board as it is intended.
All the ranting/raving/cursing/insults above was entirely him responding to a quote from me, thus he typed those words in red. Sorry I dont act like a deranged lunatic on the internet and start flipping out cursing and throwing insults. His ignorance in suggesting that the Bypass is a 100% superior operation than the Sleeve and is better in everyway is incorrect and dangerous, and has no place on a message board where people are trying to inform themselves about a life altering surgery. Both surgerys have advantages and disadvantages that is a fact. Labeling one as "clearly superior" is not proper or correct
Unless I did/said something otherwise that I missed...

But the bypass also carries major risks of malnutrition, Vitamin deficiencys, anemia, osteoporosis as well.
And Uhm glasses don't alter your anatomy at all, they go on your face. When you don't want them you take it off.
A sleeve doesn't alter your anatomy in a surgical sense, it makes your stomach smaller but that's it. There's no crossing wires or anything like that.
How about dumping syndrome with the bypass also? The risks of that I've seen range from 20-85% depending on the degree/incidence of it
You're argument is really stretching things and bending the truth. Both operations are good and serve a purpose. And there are patients who would be better off with one over the other. Again I'm getting a bypass for one of those reasons. But it's a much more serious and involved operation

Missy161 reacted to Mhy12784 in Sleeve vs. Bypass
Ill preface this by saying im getting a bypass (because I have serious GERD) but the sleeve is the better option for many if not most people. Its safer, less side effects/long term complications, less long term risks, its a much simpler operation, it doesnt change the anatomy, and it allows you to still consume alcohol and NSAIDS (yes one of these two is much more important than the other)
And im an operating room nurse in a facility that does a ton of bariatric cases and unfortunately ive seen a few cases first hand of what can go wrong with a bypass years down the road, so I know how much more dangerous it is than a sleeve. I have NEVER seen a patient come back to the operating room with long term complications from a sleeve. But ive seen many patients come back with Petersens hernias, perforated ulcers, bowel obstructions from Gastric Bypasses. Some of these are life threatening and altering.
Sure theyre both great operations which have their benefits and drawbacks, with situations where one is clearly superior to the other. But if one of them was the "winner" I would certainly say it was the sleeve.
