Lela's New Life reacted to Introversion in Not losing consistently
Really? Life is so much better as a normal-weight person.
Health-wise, a body with less pounds reaps rewards immediately and in the long run. In addition, society and the public are nicer and more deferential to normal-weight people. Fat-shaming and weight discrimination are very real phenomenons that disappear once a person attains a normal body weight.
Though I was a painfully slow loser, I have no regrets about having surgery. I was miserable when I was fat. Life is too short to not enjoy the best of both worlds.

Yeah my loss was like stair steps all along the way... I would go for a time with no loss then a big drop. Just be patient!

Lela's New Life reacted to Introversion in Not losing consistently
You aren't going to lose consistently. Ever, ever, ever. The sooner you face this reality, the less anxiety you'll have during the weight loss phase.
Losing weight with a sleeve is not a consistent process. It doesn't occur in a predictable pattern. Weight loss isn't a linear event: we lose pounds, hold on to some pounds at times, and stall occasionally before dropping more weight.
Moreover, certain groups of people may lose more slowly, such as 'lightweights' who started at less than 200 pounds, older females, menopausal ladies, racial/ethnic minorities, and those with metabolic issues (PCOS, hypothyroid, long-standing diabetes, insulin resistance).
You may also weigh yourself too often. I only weighed myself once monthly during my weight loss phase to prevent disappointment from not seeing daily weight loss. Monthly weights were better for my sanity due to seeing the progress over a time period of 4+ weeks.
Remember that you probably didn't become fat in a few months. Therefore, it won't come off in a few months. Slow and steady wins the race. Fast and crass doesn't last.
Good luck to you.

Lela's New Life reacted to gwbicster in Want to burp, feel air bubble, it won't come out, then hiccups, very painful
Yes it occured to me that this might be what it was. Next time it happens I'll try what you suggested.
For now I'm stopping taking any pills other than my anti-acid one until I can talk to my surgeon. I'm feeling a bit better than yesterday but only after trying to take another pill and throwing up again.
On the plus side I somehow lost 6 pounds yesterday! (Wow, how is this even possible?)
Thanks for your input.

I think that might just be "frothing". I had the first week (i'm 4 weeks post-op) but it didn't make me throw up. When ever I need to burp but can't I always sit forward with my elbows/forearms on my knees and that helps SOOOO much! Hope you're feeling better.

Lela's New Life reacted to Introversion in 2 months and 38 pounds
Stalls are a normal part of the weight loss phase.
As a side note, you are losing more rapidly than I ever did. It took me nearly 4 months to lose 38 pounds, but you've accomplished that in less than 2 months. You're doing well.
Good luck on your journey.

Lela's New Life reacted to RickM in Acid Reflux
Acid reflux with the sleeve is primarily a function of the stomach volume being reduced more than the acid producing potential. The body usually adjusts over time, but not always, hence the need for the acid reducing meds for a time, or sometimes long term. Leave the acid supplements to the miracle diet supplement crowd - they don't address the issue that we have (if they do anything positive at all.)
PPIs (protein pump inhibitors) are usually the med of choice to address this problem (Prilosec, Nexium, Protonix and others and their generic equivalents) but have some long term concerns that need to be weighed. There is also another class of drugs - h2 inhibitors - (Zantac, Pepcid, and generic equivalents) that can be used as well and are generally considered to be safer long term though often less effective. A combination of the two is often used as a compromise treatment or when weaning off of the PPI.

Lela's New Life reacted to PatientEleventyBillion in Thirsty for water ALL the time!
When they reach that soft solid stage they might just be uncomfortable with the restriction they suddenly feel. One egg was more than enough from me when I transitioned.
In regards to Water, I drink tons a day, but I can't gulp.. I can get away with one or two but if I go any more than that it starts making me feel sick. I used to absolutely chug water so this has probably been one of my biggest post-op changes.

Lela's New Life reacted to Inner Surfer Girl in Worst Experience so far?
I am over a year post-op from getting the sleeve. The worst parts off the experience for me?
Probably waiting so long to decide to get the surgery, the pre-op uncertainty/anxiety, the little bit of gas pain in my shoulder post-op and some post-op Constipation, and not being able to get in the pool for four weeks post-op.
In other words, not much.

Lela's New Life reacted to madamlash in 6 weeks out n slaying!
6 weeks out yesterday and I couldn't be happier!!
I don't have any pics yet but thought I would share some of my sleeve adventure for those on the same road or those considering this surgery.
The Wins!
1) 17.1kgs down at 6 weeks out mark (37.7 lbs)
2) My fat feet/cankles have shrunk - down 2 buckles holes on the work shoes!
3) Fat clothes I hated being given away to charity
4) Fitting into clothes I haven't worn in easily 5 years
5) Energy levels are great and sleeping well
6) All this extra time in hand now to do stuff! I'm not eating or thinking about what my next meal will be or thinking about food at all really
7) Snoring reduced significantly
8) Had terrible heartburn prior to surgery - NONE after!
The strange head stuff I wasn't super prepared for:
1) Going from craving breads/carbs/sweets to craving meat and cheese Like never before
2) Regretting going out because buying a meal is just a waste of money. This NEVER EVER was a problem before - there was never anything left on the plate!
3) Looking forward to exercise - umm wtf? This just cannot be right
4) Staying the same number on the scale for 3 weeks but centimetres lost from my body
5) Not being able to stand sweet things. I used to love lollies/candy/cake. Now even the smell makes me feel quite nauseous
6) Forcing myself to eat when really I could skip a meal and not be concerned
7) Taking 30mins to eat something I previously would have scoffed in 2-3 mouthfuls
Overall I just wish I hadn't delayed this surgery at all. I was a lucky person with minimal pain, no reflux and easy recovery.
My only concern right now is the keloid scars I have from the wounds. I'm a very fair caucasian female now with thick red ropey scars. Currently trying CircaCare collagen Patches on them to try and reduce the redness and raised look. Will share my before and after pics if it works well as might help others. I did know this was a risk with my skin before going in, and to be honest, even if they don't go away, I don't really care as everything else is working out well.
Hoping to be under 100kgs, and lost over 20kgs for my birthday at the end of June!

Lela's New Life reacted to Honeypenny in Carbs
I never was on a Protein only phase.
would sugar free popsicles work? I count it in my Fluid count, and it satisfies my sweet tooth.

Lela's New Life reacted to blizair09 in Carbs
I haven't had more than 20 grams of carbs any day in about 15 months. After a time, you just don't want them anymore.
So much of this journey is a mental battle. If you know that carbs are something that you shouldn't consume, you just have to have the inner strength to resist them. For me, they would derail everything I have worked so hard for, and no food or drink is worth that to me!
So, my advice is when you get those cravings, consider your goals, take a deep breath, and just say no...

Lela's New Life reacted to Joann454 in 1 week, no weight loss!
Love this. I realized I wasn't getting in enough Water. It gets warm, I switch out the bottles. I ended up with so many partial bottles of water. Switched to my big cold tumbler so I could keep a more accurate count. Lost two lbs after not moving for a few days! -
Lela's New Life reacted to AK_Bookworm in 1 week, no weight loss!
I'm almost 4 weeks out... have only lost about 13lbs since surgery, and have been stalled for a week now... I was getting frustrated with the scale because it's not moving UNTIL yesterday when I went to Target... I decided to try on an XL and was like yeah right... I was able to get it in although I am definitely not ready to buy any XL shirts yet lol. I thought I was doing something wrong because I can still fit my clothes from before surgery (they are loose but not big enough to stop wearing) and I haven't lost much weight but after trying on that XL and also realizing that I'm probably a solid XXL in juniors instead of a 3x-4x in plus size my mindset is changed completely. I was beyond happy at Target trying on clothes and didn't care about the scale not moving (and could give two fucks at this point) because even though the scale isn't moving those inches are coming off and that's progress too... I bet even though the scale isn't moving (and it will again) you're losing inches. I've learned during this stall (my first but I'm sure here will be many more) to focus on the other weight loss positives and not the scale... it has also helped me break up with my scale and not rely on it so much. Hang in there I'm sure you're doing amazing!!!
