Crissyt reacted to Swanton_Bomb in Sweet potatoes
My nutritionist says they are fine, as long as you eat your Protein and veggies first and eat them in moderation. If you think they would be a "trigger" food for you then I would stay away from them. I think that's the bigger issue, knowing what triggers you. I am speaking from a pre-surgery perspective though. I am capable of eating carbohydrates and even some sugary foods in moderation but here are certain things (many things actually) that I really can't have in the house. Sometimes it doesn't even make any sense....for example, I can eat a small single ice cream bar without issue. If I have a single bite of an ice cream sandwich however, I will not stop until the box is empty, I feel sick and I hate myself.

Most Beans are counted in most programs as a Protein. Sweet potato’s are counted as a starch.

If you have room for a starchy veg, sweet potatoes are a good one. Just don’t junk it up with butter, brown sugar...you know the drill. ;)

They were on my plan since stage 2, I don't eat them often like once every month if that (because everything in moderation, right)I eat legumes more often, I'm only 9 months out but at a year out I can't imagine any vegetables being off limits, especially in moderation. Its not the same as a white potato after all, but consult your NUT to be certain. They do push the Protein first then vegetables carbs last motto so by that standard you really can't have a ton.

Just a question, are sweet potatoes ok to eat? They are supposed to be a super food but they are still a starch. Beans are a starch but we can have them . Just curious if anyone have ask their dr this question?

Crissyt reacted to jlem525 in Firefighter considering VSG surgery
I am a full time Firefighter for the past 12 years. I have struggled with my weight my entire life and feel that it's well beyond the time that I should have done something about it. Not only do I work my Fire dept job, I also work Part time as a FF/Paramedic at another Fire Dept and part time in an ER as a Paramedic. My average work week is 90-110 hours. My concerns are that of hydration and sustenance. As I understand it, Post Op you are limited to 8oz portions of foods and Water at a time. During an incident, there are times that I'm drinking 2-3 12oz bottles of water or potentially going 6-8 hours with out the chance of eating or drinking water. Where as I know that I need to do something drastic to become healthy, honestly, this idea scares the hell out of me as to the potential complications and my circumstances. Any input from those in the field who have done this?

No, suggestions. Just got my date yesterday for 3/31 and my thoughts are consumed. I wish i could wake up and it was 3/31 tomorrow [emoji4]
Try and keep busy and it will go by quick. It seems like yesterday i kust started my 6 month program, was so impatient I was ready to go to Mexico, but hubby would not go for it [emoji20]
Now Im a mere 3 weeks away from a new beginning. It will be here before we know it.
