BgR72 got a reaction from Pup in Skinny girl protein shake
I heard of them but not too familiar. Muscle Milk has more Protein. It is what I will use for my pre & op diet & lifestyle in general too. Muscle milk has zero sugar & 25 grams of protein. Some of them have 2 grams of sugar & the 100 calories ones have no sugar. They also have one that has about 220 or 260 calories with 40 grams of protein. So any formula in the muscle milk is a great source of protein. Watch out for the cyto muscle milk its not the geniune one. It has to say Genuine Muscle Milk. I get them at Walmart for 2.98. Also on Amazon I can get a case of 12. They come in 14 oz& 17 oz ready to drink. Also they come in powder mix. Just putting that out there. Still, good to try different brands. I read where someone stated that their taste changed after surgery and they suggest to not buy all in one flavor or brand. Mix them up.

BgR72 got a reaction from mjfx2 in Im already developing a new food list for my new healthy lifestyle
My pre surgical consult is Feb 24. I been through this years ago but just didnt have the mindset to continue past the consult . This time around my mindset is ready and been researching extensively gastric bypass. I also have developed a list of healthy foods to make part of my new healthy lifestyle after the transition. I am thinking ahead and steady creating an atmosphere that becomes my lifestyle with the vegetables and fruits that I should have been eating and enjoying instead of the sweets and unheathly foods. I figure its never too early to develop the mindset needed after pre & post op diet. The fact is that we wont be on liquid supplements for life. The reality of healthy food must be a primary goal to continue with consistent weight loss and with keeping the weight off. Its a choice!

So, If you dont understand something its best to get informed on it instead of rejecting it. It pays off to do your research for your own wellbeing. The focus must be on doing whats best for you in your situation. In this journey you must become an advocate in keeping healthy. It is our choice to stay healthy. The people that are "drinking beer and eating whatever" won't be losing weight forever. Changing your relationship with food is what makes for success long term. If these folks are truly doing what you are saying, let's see where they are in a couple of years. I am militant about everything that goes into my body. I have to be that way to be successful. Keep doing what you are doing. You will be better off in the long run.

Hello, I am new on here. I have only done a couple of posts but I got to tell you all what I noticed about Multivitamins. Lately, for the past 2 weeks I have been taking my multivitamins(its in tablet form)but this time around I take the recommended two tablets instead of the one tablet I usually would take. I notice a change in my cravings and appetite. My cravings arent as strong and my appetite has mellowed out not as intense. I believe the multivitamins are to blame. I havent changed anything outside of adding the extra tablet each day which is what is recommended. Multivitamins are very important BEFORE and after surgery. It makes sense. Get on multivitamins before your surgery. I dont know if this is medically sound but in my case I really have cut out sugar with the recommended multivitamins. Its always a good thing to prepare beforehand. I will ask my primary doctor to order bloodwork to check for any deficiencies before surgery. Its a good thing to know where you stand. Well, I just wanted to put that out there. Multivitamins are

Exactly. Some weeks ago, I was with my nieces at Disney. It was afternoon, and they wanted icecream. After a while they would offer me but I would say no. Then they started making a fuss, so I accepted it from them. Combined, it was like 1/2 a cup. Funny enough, it was my first ice cream in 18 months.
I never cared much for icecream before surgery, neither do I now after surgery.. but i almost wanted to ask if it was okay to have icecream (as a sleever) because I didn't want a running stomach at Disney. I decided not to ask, lest i recieve a lecture about 'how my icecream eating ways got me to where I was'.
    Anyway. My advice is two-way.
Many of us are 'sensitive' people, and I hope people keep that in mind. The goal is to advise in such a way that it won't be rebuffed. Some people are just curious. They ask for 'safety', not because they need 'enablers' or because they are looking for justification to begin bad habits.
On the other hand, we should accept that many people give 'straight to the point' answers/lectures, either based on past experience, or on (a) negative outcome(s) they have seen happen. The answer you may interpret as being harsh or judgemental, may simply be concern.

I agree with @BigViffer, you have your whole life to introduce biscuits, dumplings and gravy back into your life. Use this "honeymoon" phase to eat clean, healthy, whole foods that are on your plan. No judgement here either, just a humble opinion by someone(me) who is a year out this month. You can do this, use this time to make positive life changing habits now.

It doesn't matter which surgery you choose. There is no guarantee you will dump so choosing bypass won't save you from sweets.

Find sugar free sweet replacements. I have sweets all the time but I don't eat sugar. My sweets are Protein bars, Protein brownies, cream cheese withe stevia that ends up tasting like cheesecake.

You have to think of long term solutions to the things you like. This is a life long thing, not a diet to squeeze into a bridesmaid dress.

There is nothing wrong with replacements. Most of them are expensive and scarce so that will naturally keep you from over indulging.

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.
Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your Protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein shakes.
It is common for individuals to be unable to meet their daily protein and Fluid requirements within the first couple weeks after surgery. This is because your body is in a major heal mode. So provided there are no medical issues, you should just keep trying and each day you should be getting closer and closer to meeting the daily requirement.
So in reading your post, the things that would cause me concern is your inability to meet fluid and protein requirements. Don't worry about foods at this stage.
Be willing to experiment. After surgery, my taste buds changed dramatically. Even Water changed. In the hospital it tasted excessively chlorinated and I could not drink it. So I experimented. sugar free popsicles became my best friend. Some individuals find hot or cold can help with fluids. For me, I found that I could tolerate flavored water. So I began using Crystal Light. I recently found a new drink "Bai" which I liked cold. In the winter, I found that I tolerate Hot drinks such as piping hot cocoa. But you have to use the "No Sugar Added" variety. Also fine English teas were very good.
It is very important that you transition to Protein Shakes. There are many different types of formulations on protein shakes. I would recommend that you keep experimenting until you find one that you can tolerate. You don't have to like it, just tolerate it. I used Muscle Milk Light (vanilla Creme) powder blended with Water and a half a banana. That worked for me. But on the opposite end of the spectrum, you might try premixed Isopure. If you fail to consume an adequate amount of protein, your body will try and scavenge protein from your body such as your muscles, hair, your heart muscles, your teeth. If you are unable to tolerate any type of Protein shake, the only alternative I could recommend is to fall back to milk. Combine the milk with powdered milk in order to fortify it. [ 8 ounces of 1% milk combined with 1/4 cup of dry milk provides 14 grams of protein. ]

BgR72 reacted to James Marusek in Minimizing complications
Good luck on your upcoming surgery. Life is full of risk. I had RNY gastric bypass surgery because I was overweight and my obesity began to seriously affect my health and my life expectancy. A am 3 1/2 years post-op and having the surgery was one of the best decisions I ever made.
But it sounds like you are focusing on minimizing complications. So prior to surgery you might create or update your will. Generally this type of surgery is probably on the same order of danger as most types of operations today. There is the risk of blood clots, so make sure you wear compression stockings after surgery and take the prescription blood thinner medicine and walk, walk, walk. There is a risk of ulcers, so make sure you stay away from NSAIDs such as aspirin and also use a proton pump inhibitors (such as Prilosec) for the first year post-op.
The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. So the focus post surgery is on Protein, Fluid, Vitamin, exercise and meal volume control in order to minimize risks.
Pre-surgery I would recommend the following:
    1. Take a good before photograph of yourself, so that you have something to compare to after surgery. Many times we are blind to our obesity. We do not see ourselves. Therefore when the weight begins to drop off rather dramatically, we question if this is really happening. Photographs are a good visualization of our success. Many people carry a before and after photo with them, just to remind themselves of their success.
    2. Walk 30 minutes each day, every day until surgery (or equivalent exercise). Walking helps the recovery process go smoothly and minimized the pain levels from surgery. 3. Wean yourself from caffeine and carbonated beverages now. After I gave up my 6 diet coke a day habit, I suffered from a week of severe withdrawal syndrome consisting of severe headaches and body aches. I was miserable. You don't want to combine the effects of caffeine withdrawal with the effects of surgery.
